How To Choose A Reusable Water Bottle

Find Out The Difference Between Stainless Steel, Copper, Titanium And Glass!

Breaking ties with single use plastic water bottles is an amazing feeling. Because consuming water out of a single use plastic bottle isn’t just horrible for the environment, it’s also harmful to the human body. When you drink out of plastic bottles, you’re ingesting an entire petrie dish of hormone-disrupting chemicals and bacteria that can wreck havock on your health.

So, let’s ditch the plastic, and invest in reusable water bottles that are 100% BPA-free, sustainable & recyclable!

Which Bottle Is Best?

Now that you’ve committed to ditch the plastic and are ready to invest in a healthier and eco-friendly alternative, which one do you choose? Which material is safest? What brand is best?

Material

When shopping for a safe reusable water bottle, choose from either culinary-grade stainless steel, copper, titanium or glass. All four are the healthiest options in addition to being environmentally friendly, sustainable and recyclable. However, like any product, there are pros and cons—so let’s take a look those before you make an informed decision.

Stainless Steel is an iron alloy with added natural elements consisting of carbon, silicon, nitrogen, chromium, nickel and manganese. It’s incredibly durable and can insulate hot and cold liquid temperatures for up to 24 hours. Some bottles can affect the water—giving it a metallic aftertaste, but that depends. Some bottles are lined to eliminate that issue. Nonetheless, it is environmentally friendly, dishwasher safe, and does not rust.

Copper is a soft metal and an essential mineral in the human body. And there is debate over whether or not drinking from a copper vessel provides several health benefits such as boosting immune health and aiding digestion. However, one fact regarding copper holds true—it’s antibacterial. Copper kills germs and virus molecules on contact—making it a healthy metal for water storage. A con is that it’s known to “sweat”. Copper does not rust and is not dishwasher safe.

Titanium is a lustrous transition metal that’s low in density, but high in strength—resulting in a phenomenal weight to strength ratio. It’s resistant to corrosion, and is non-reactive; so it won’t leach into your liquid. With that said, it doesn’t alter the taste of water like other vessels tend to do. It is dishwasher safe (best to place on top rack due to silicon ring that keeps cap from leaking). The only con is that it’s more expensive than other bottles because of all the positive attributes.

Glass is an amorphous solid formed by rapid cooling in the molten form. And though chemical compositions may vary, a common fundamental constituent is silicon dioxide. It can be recycled endlessly and doesn’t alter the taste of liquid. Glass is dishwasher safe, but has potential to break if dropped or thrown. Luckily, some bottles come with reinforcements that prevent damage—providing lovely aesthetics.

  1. I have a hard time drinking out of plastic water bottles because, yes, it is so wasteful. I’m also on the lookout for a new water bottle since I had a baby a couple of months ago and I’m trying to keep my water intake up. These are great suggestions.

  2. I’ve been bringing around bottles and take away boxes to reduce single use materials. The bottles you listed above look so nice! Time to shop!

  3. You’ve got some great options here! I have a glass bottle with a sleeve that I switched to when it comes to my music rehearsals and performances. That’s the time when I was going through water the most, but my other steel bottle is a really bright colour, so it would stand out during performance a little too much. The sleeve on my glass bottle is a pretty grey, making it perfect for events like that! Plus it’s a full 1L bottle, meaning that I never run out of water when I need it!
