The Health Benefits Of Beeswax Candles

Looking For A Natural Way To Rid Your Home Of Pollutants? Read On To See How Beeswax Candles Can Help!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Are you an allergy sufferer looking for an organic way to purify the air in your home? You’ve come to the right place!

We’ve got some interesting facts about beeswax candles that will inspire you to ditch the fancy brands for good!

With that said, let’s take a look at the fascinating benefits of Beeswax candles that sets them apart from soy and other recipes.

The Benefits Of Beeswax Candles

Beeswax Candles Are Natural Air Purifiers

Research confirms that beeswax candles neutralize pollutants in the home such as mold, mildew and dust—making beeswax candles natural air purifiers. That’s because when burned, beeswax produces negative ions which attach to positive ions like dust.

Traditional candles on the other hand, are not organic, and instead are made from a petroleum byproduct called paraffin. When burned, paraffin produces smoke and soot as a byproduct—triggering a histamine response in your body.

Beeswax Candles Provide Natural Stress Relief

A second benefit of burning beeswax candles is stress relief. Beeswax candles are hypoallergenic and their natural subtle honey aroma is known to create an atmosphere of tranquillity—promoting relaxation and soothing restlessness. So if you’re looking to achieve better sleep, you should light a beeswax candle in the late evening.

Beeswax Candles Last Longer Than Other Candles

Due to its density, beeswax burns at a much slower rate than traditional candles. Even the smallest of beeswax candles (birthday candles) can burn as long as 30 minutes. While many larger beeswax candles can burn as long as 70-80 hours.

Hence, Beeswax candles may be more expensive than soy or paraffin, but they outlast their competition and never go rancid. That’s right, as long as the wick is intact, you can burn a beeswax candle that’s been in storage for years!

Beeswax Candles Don’t Drip

Have you ever lit a pillar candle or birthday candle only to see it start dripping? Thats very common with paraffin candles. And those that don’t drip, are full of additives to mimic beeswax candles. Birthday candles that are made of natural beeswax, will not drip. So go ahead and enjoy that cake, minus the waxy coating.

Beeswax Candles Burn Brighter Than Other Candles

Beeswax has a very high melting point of approximately 149° Fahrenheit, so it burns brighter than any other candle. In fact, beeswax candles emit a flame that’s on the same spectrum as sunlight, which makes these candles an awesome addition to your emergency supply stockpile (if you lose electricity, you’ll have hours of bright, non-toxic light).

With that said, if you’d like to try out a beeswax candle, we’ve created a list of recommended candle brands below.

And if you feel like doing a little DIY, see the YouTube video below by Our Oily House for an easy homemade beeswax candle recipe.

The Best Zero-Waste Shampoo Bars For Men

Shopping For Bottled Shampoo Alternatives? Read On For The Most Sustainable Shampoo Bars For Men

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries A Small Commission

Are you wanting to make a switch from bottled shampoo to something more sustainable? You’ve come to the right place!

Men need to have an eco-friendly haircare routine just like women—and now they can! Because the world of men’s grooming now includes shampoo bars.

With that said, we’ve created a men’s shampoo bar guide with the best ethical hair care brands that focus on both quality and sustainability.

Each men’s shampoo bar in this guide contains only all-natural, organic and vegan ingredients. None have been tested on animals, and every bar contains plastic-free packaging that can be recycled, composted or reused.

What Are The Benefits Of Shampoo Bars?

Shampoo Bars Are Plastic-Free

Liquid shampoos are packaged in plastic bottles, and if you take into account one bottle per person, that’s millions of shampoo bottles laying around in your local landfill. Shampoo bars, on the other hand, are packaged in paper or tin, which are recyclable, biodegradable and reusable.

Shampoo Bars Are Made From Natural Ingredients

Shampoo bars don’t need preservatives like liquid shampoo, so they’re free from toxic chemicals and made with all-natural ingredients that don’t strip your hair from its own natural oils—resulting in soft, hydrated hair.

Shampoo Bars Are Multi-Purpose

If you’re in a hurry, shampoo bars are the way to go because a majority of them are meant for the entire body. Whereas liquid shampoo is limited to just the hair on your scalp, shampoo bars can be used for your face, body and even beard. In fact, many can be used as shave soap.

Shampoo Bars Are Convenient For Travel

Because shampoo bars are solid and compact, they are TSA approved and excellent for travel and outdoor recreation. You can easily store them in a travel container and not worry about spills or having to buy shampoo when you get to your travel destination.

Shampoo Bars Save You Money

Though they have a higher up-front cost, shampoo bars save you money in the long run because one bar lasts as long as 2-3 bottles of shampoo, or around 30-40 washes. Just store it properly on a ventilated soap dish to keep it from turning to goo, and you’re good to go!

What Are Some Disadvantages Of Shampoo Bars?

  • Shampoo bars have a time limit and can go rancid due to the essential oils that they are infused with—so make sure to use them up within 6 months of purchase.
  • Shampoo bars are hard to get used to at first and can make your hair feel waxy (which is because your natural oils aren’t getting stripped away).
  • It may be hard to lather super long hair and we recommend a good conditioner bar to prevent tangles.
  • As mentioned earlier, shampoo bars cost more than most bottled shampoo because of the all-natural ingredients needed to make each bar.

How Do You Use A Shampoo Bar?

To use a shampoo bar, jump into the shower and fully soak your hair with warm water. Then, take your bar and rub it between your wet hands to create a lather, or directly onto your hair. Lastly, place your bar aside and continue to massage your scalp using your fingers followed by a rinse.

If you need more clarification on how to use a shampoo bar, check out this tutorial brought to you by Grown Ass Man Shampoo Bar Co (who happen to be in this top 10 list).

The Best Countertop Compost Bins

Need A Sustainable Way To Dispose Of Food Scraps? Read On For The Best Countertop Composters For Small Kitchens

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Food is a basic human need, yet we take it for granted—creating food waste that contributes to 6% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Restaurants, grocery stores and our own households generate a good amount of food waste on a daily basis. And if you have a tiny squad of picky eaters, you know that’s not far from the truth!

So what can society as a whole do to lower our carbon footprint when it comes to food waste? The answer to that is indoor composting—and you don’t need a backyard to do it.

What Is Composting?

Composting is the method of taking food scraps and other organic items, placing them into a bin, and allowing everything to decompose and biodegrade into nutrient-rich material.

Composting is really quite beautiful. You’re essentially guiding dead matter into the afterlife, where it will emerge as something purposeful—it will contribute to the growth of new living matter. It’s literally the circle of life.

Compost acts as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner that’s used throughout the world for organic farming, gardening and landscaping. It also acts as a natural pesticide, reducing the need for harmful chemicals in agriculture.

There are three main ways to compost:

  • Continuous composting occurs outdoors within large containers. This is a method primarily used by gardeners. Food scraps and landscape items such as weeds, grass clippings and twigs are continuously placed inside to biodegrade.
  • Just as the name infers, batch composting occurs in batches in order to biodegrade at a faster rate. Food waste and other material are added into a pile at one time, then mixed and tumbled a couple of times a day until the compost is “cooked” and ready to be used. Then it’s switched out with new waste and the process is repeated.
  • Indoor composting consists of composting on a smaller scale—mostly kitchen food scraps which are tossed into a gallon sized countertop bin that contains an odor absorbing charcoal filter (though not all bins require one). This smaller production of compost is typically used on household plants and small gardens, and it’s a great way fo strive for a zero-waste kitchen.

The Benefits Of Composting Food Scraps

Composting helps fight climate change! As mentioned previously, food that ends up decomposing in landfills contributes to six percent of global green house gas emissions.

When you compost, your small contribution helps reduce these greenhouse gas emissions, and you’re supplying your lawn, garden and household plants with organic and rich nutrients.

What Can You Compost?

You can compost most fruit/vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags and old bread. If you’re using an outdoor bin, you can throw in larger twigs, weeds, and grass clippings, etc.

You should never compost meat, fish, dairy products or oil of any kind, as these items will only attract maggots and rodents.

If indoor composting sounds appealing, then you should definitely give it a try! You’ll feel great about recycling organic matter and turning it into something purposeful.

Below are a few excellent kitchen countertop compost bins to get you started. They all come with tight seals and charcoal filters to trap odor, so no need to worry about attracting flies.

Concern about odor is a main reason that prevents people from pursuing this practice, but there’s really no need to worry about it.

These bins are easy to clean, and some are even dishwasher safe. It’s also up to you if you’d like to use a biodegradable liner. It’s really not required, but it’s easier to maintain a clean bin that way. Some of these bins come with liners included, and some must be purchased separately.

Another great feature about countertop compost bins is the size. They’re all primarily one gallon-sized containers, so they’ll fit just about anywhere without taking up much space.

They also all come in different styles—from retro to modern and contemporary. And, stainless steel to ceramic and more. So whatever look you’re into, there’s a compost bin out there that’ll match your kitchen decor.

Best Reusable Travel Utensil Sets

Shopping For A Portable Utensil Set? Read On To See Our Guide For The Best Travel-Friendly Kits To Help Combat Plastic Pollution!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Become a part of the Bring Your Own Cutlery Movement (BYOC) and help reduce the amount of disposable utensils that end up in the landfill, waterways and oceans each year

If you’re looking a for a more sustainable way to travel, then adding a reusable utensil set to your travel gear is one of the most planet-friendly gestures you can do.

We live in an era where being good stewards of the Earth is more important than ever. And embracing reusable options when it comes to cutlery is a fantastic way to combat plastic pollution.

With that said, we’ve put together a shopping guide to help you find the perfect reusable utensil set that best suits your style.

What Are The Benefits Of Reusable Utensils?

  • Reusable cutlery is eco-friendly and helps decrease the amount of plastic utensils that end up in landfills, waterways and oceans.
  • Reusable utensils are portable and great for roadtrips, camping, picnics, work and eating out at restaurants. Many are even TSA compliant so you can avoid plastic cutlery at the airport (keep reading for more info on air travel requirements).
  • Reusable utensils are non-toxic and durable. You don’t have to worry about micro-plastic or hormone disrupting chemicals leaching into your food, or having your fork snap while you’re trying to chow down.
  • If you’re at a restaurant you can set aside their cutlery and use your own. Realizing how many mouths their fork has been in is incredibly cringy.

What Are The Cons Of Reusable Utensils?

  • They have to be cleaned after you finish your meal, which isn’t really that big of a deal. If you’re near a public restroom you can easily rinse them under running water. Some people just find this to be an inconvenience.
  • You might forget them at home, so we recommend buying at least two sets and keeping one in your purse or car.
  • Certain sets might not fit into your purse or pocket depending on how big the carrying case is, and whether or not they are collapsible, so you have to find the right set for your lifestyle.

Which Reusable Utensil Kits Are TSA Compliant?

Going green at the airport is finally a reality since many utensil kits are TSA compliant.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), “Knives, except for plastic or round-bladed butter knives, are not allowed in carry-on bags”.

Hence, as long as you have a non-serrated rounded knife and fork (sporks are excellent too), TSA may approve your reusable utensil kit.

What Are Reusable Utensils Made From?

It used to be that reusable forks and spoons were made of only metal varieties, but today you’ll find that a lot of reusable cutlery is made from some really unique plant-based material that allows them to biodegrade:

  • Bamboo
  • Coconut
  • Wheat Straw
  • Rice Husks
  • Sustainable Wood (teakwood + acacia)

However, if you’re old fashioned and prefer metal, you can opt for utensils made from stainless steel, aluminum or titanium—both sustainable options that last a lifetime.

To show you how plastic cutlery affects marine life, see the video below by the Leatherback Trust, which features a plastic fork being removed from the nose of a sea turtle— but please know that it is hard to watch to take caution or just skip watching.

Source: The Leatherback Trust | YouTube

With that said, below are reusable utensils for every kind of person. Each set is durable, stylish and most importantly, they help save marine life.
