Deciding whether or not to let your child go back to tradition schooling is a tough and scary decision.

I have a six year old entering first grade, so I totally understand, and am struggling with the same decision.

But if you’re one of the many parents who decide to go that route, you know that it’s about that time to start shopping for some necessities—like backpacks and lunch totes.

And did you know that these essentials come in eco-friendly versions? Yup! Even backpacks!

Eco-Friendly Backpacks

Typically, parents go to the store and let their kids pick out a backpack. But, we don’t think too much about what it’s made of or where it’s going to go when it wears out. We just go through the motions.

But we should care. Because chances are, the Batman backpack that we purchase is made out of synthetic material that’s going to sit in a landfill for a very long time. Just like plastic straws.

However, we don’t have to buy those—because eco-friendly backpacks do exist! And they’re made of biodegradable and compostable material.

Plus, they’re stylish and super cute! Not all eco-friendly stuff is boring!

Eco-Friendly Lunch Gear

Lunch boxes and lunch totes also come in eco-friendly varieties.

You can find totes and carriers that are made of raw linen or organic cotton. Both biodegradable material.

Bento Boxes & Reusable Snack Bags

Another eco-friendly option is bento boxes! Bento boxes are Japanese style lunch containers with multiple convenient compartments for easy food separation. You can get them in stainless steel, or biodegradable versions made from wheat straw. Plus, they typically come with reusable utensils!

Other types of food storage consist of reusable snack and sandwhich bags that range from organic cotton to silicone.

Reusable Water Bottles

Reusable water bottles can easily be placed inside of lunchboxes, as some come in sizes that accommodate small spaces. Many manufacturers make bottles that are between 6 to 12 ounces—which is perfect for kids!

What kind do we recommend? We recommend stainless steel. They’ll keep drinks cool, and they won’t break. Because let’s face it, kids are clumsy.

Utensils

If you’re a brave mom who doesn’t mind her child taking household utensils to school—I applaud that.

But, mine throws it away. Every. Time.

So, I started buying biodegradable utensils made of either wood or wheat straw. And I don’t have to worry about expensive silverware going missing anymore.

Napkins

Every lunch box should come equipped with napkins so that your little one can wipe their mouth. But, napkins can be wasteful. That’s why you should opt for reusable and washable cotton napkins. Many are handmade with cute designs just for kids!

Below you’ll find ideas for eco-friendly backpacks, lunch containers, water bottles and utensils, that you and your little one will feel good about using!
