Interested in sustainable living, but not sure where to begin? You are not alone!

Many people are becoming eco-conscious and looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. However, they often face the problem of not knowing where to begin—and that’s where zero-waste kits come in handy.

What Are Zero Waste Starter Kits?

Zero-waste starter kits consist of hand-selected environmentally friendly items that help you to ease into a sustainable lifestyle.

These sustainable starter kits are full of eco-friendly, zero-waste, non-toxic and sustainable items that improve your health and lower your carbon footprint.

Are All Zero-Waste Kits The Same?

No, not all zero-waste kits are the same. Depending on where you purchase them from, each box will consist of hand-selected and assorted items. A good zero-waste starter kit should contain a nice balance of everyday reusable essentials.

Zero-waste kits are also available in monthly subscriptions, which is a fantastic way to explore various sustainable brands. Some eco-friendly subscription boxes can also be purchased once (in case you don’t want to commit, or are simply buying a box as a gift).

Are Zero Waste Kits Vegan?

Some zero-waste kits are also 100% vegan and some are not, and that is based on whether or not they contain reusable beeswax wraps. Beeswax is not considered vegan.

Some people are heavily invested in a vegan lifestyle, so that’s a huge factor to consider when shopping for a zero-waste kit for a friend, family member or co-worker.

Do Zero-Waste Kits Make Good Gifts?

Yes, zero-waste kits make generous and thoughtful gifts—especially for Earth lovers and eco-conscious individuals who prefer reusable items.

So whether you’re on a mission to find a zero-waste kit for yourself, a friend or loved one, you’re on the right path to living a more eco-friendly lifestyle, and you won’t regret trying out a sustainable starter kit!

Have you stopped to look at your bathroom products lately and questioned their impact on the environment, let alone your health?

Up until a couple of years ago, I had no idea how many alternative and zero waste options there were when it came to personal hygiene items. It literally blew my mind. And now that I’ve replaced so many traditional items in my bathroom with eco-friendly versions, I feel so much better about my health and the positive impact that I am making on the environment.

When you think about it, nearly every item in your personal hygiene routine is somehow made with or packaged in plastic. From dental floss to shampoo, many items contain a lot of synthetic ingredients and harsh chemicals that aren’t kind to our health or the fragile environment.

And I think the biggest reason that people keep investing in traditional, mainstream hygiene items is complacency. It’s hard to sever ties from personal care products that you’ve been using for years. But you never know how awesome something new will be until you try it. And that’s been my life for the past two years—trying new things.

So without further ado, I’ll share with you some really great eco-friendly personal care items that you can incorporate into your personal care routine. And if you give them a chance, you might end up wishing you’d try them sooner!

Best Zero Waste Deodorants For Men

Biodegradable And All-Natural Deodorant Brands

Updated on January 6, 2022

This post contains affiliate links, which may earn us a commission.

For most Americans, antiperspirants are part of a daily personal care routine. We wear them to block sweat, neutralize odor and to feel fresh all day long.

Unfortunately, the ingredients within traditional antiperspirants are not that great for our health.

According to MadeSafe.Org, most ingredients found in conventional deodorants are endocrine disruptors—mimicking hormones such as estrogen which results in cell mutations (tumors), reproductive toxicity and early onset puberty in children.

With that said, it’s no wonder that many health-conscious men and women are turning to alternatives with natural ingredients to combat underarm odor.

Do Natural Deodorants Really Work?

Natural deodorants neutralize odor, but they do not block the pores to keep you from sweating like traditional antiperspirants do. That’s because antiperspirants contain aluminum—the key ingredient that clogs your pores in order to keep your underarms dry.

Many people do not realize that a deodorant and an antiperspirant are actually two different things. Antiperspirants keep you dry, while deodorants mask odor. So when they switch to a natural deodorant, they become frustrated when they realize that their underarms still perspire.

However, sweating is natural. It’s part of being human. Sweat helps to regulate our body temperature and gets rid of toxins. Hence, natural deodorants allow our body to sweat while neutralizing those funky odors.

And if you’d like to know more details about what to expect when switching over to a natural deodorant, read my article on that here.

Are There Any Natural Deodorant Brands That Do Stop Perspiration?

Depending on how heavily you sweat throughout the day, some natural deodorants may help absorb perspiration. However, this may not apply to someone with an excessive sweating condition called hyperhidrosis.

Natural deodorants that contain arrow root powder as a main ingredient do a great job at absorbing sweat, drawing out toxins, and soothing irritated skin. Many of the natural deodorants within this article contain arrow root powder as a key ingredient.

What Should I Expect When Switching To A Natural Deodorant?

Having switched to a natural deodorant myself, I can tell you in all honesty that you are going to perspire and stink like a teenager for the first two or three weeks.

When you stop using traditional deodorant, your body goes into detox mode, and your underarms push out all of the toxins that were trapped inside due to the aluminum.

Because of this, a lot of people give up on the use of natural deodorant and revert back to conventional antiperspirants. So please know that this extreme odor is to be expected, and hang in there. After a few weeks, every will neutralize.

What Makes These Deodorants Zero Waste?

And in addition to being healthy and nontoxic, many natural deodorants are packaged in eco-friendly packaging—which means that the packaging is either biodegradable or made from recycled material.

These zero waste deodorant brands are also all climate pledge friendly and cruelty free.

5 Reusable Straws Your Kids Will Love!

Plastic-Free Reusable Straws Made Just For Kids

There are a ton of reusable straws on the market these days. But when it comes to kids, a majority of “reusable” straws that you see online or in the store are made of plastic. Granted, these reusable plastic straws are BPA free and perfectly safe to use, they’re still not eco friendly because they’re not recyclable, biodegradable, or zero-waste.

In my opinion, the best reusable and zero waste straws for kids are made of silicone. Silicone straws are durable yet soft enough on the teeth, and they don’t absorb hot or cold temperatures like metal straws do. Plus, they last a very, very long time—making them sustainable and zero-waste because there’s no need to replace them.

Silicone straws are also dishwasher safe and just as easy to clean as any other reusable straw. And that’s important, because when it comes to kids, a whole lot of goo gets absorbed into these straws. My daughter is constantly using her reusable straws whenever she has a drinkable yogurt, a smoothie or any other thick beverage.

With that said, below you’ll find five of the best reusable straws for kids (all silicone) that your child will really love!

TEGION

Best Zero Waste Shampoo Bars For Pets

The Best Non-Toxic Shampoo Bars For Organic Pet Care

Updated January 14, 2022

Are you searching for an alternative to traditional [bottled] pet shampoo ? You are not alone in your quest! Many pet owners are making the switch to cleansing products that are non-toxic, and made with natural ingredients that even their furry companions seem to love.

Dogs are important members of the family, and just like people, dogs are prone to skin issues. From dry, itchy skin due to allergies, to more serious health problems like mites, fleas, and ticks. And the biggest mistake that we, as pet owners make, is subjecting them to harsh chemicals which only makes the problem worse.

Can Pet Shampoo Bars Help With Skin Problems?

As someone who has owned and fostered a great number of dogs throughout the years, I’ve seen and experienced first hand, various skin issues that plague certain breeds.

With that said, we once adopted a male German Shepherd who had a horrible case of mange mites, which caused horrible redness and lesions throughout his entire body—the worst of it being around his groin area.

And although it eventually cleared up with prescription medication, he continued to live a life with sensitive skin that required a special diet and alternative [all-natural] shampoo, which kept his skin from becoming irritated and inflamed.

If your pet is also experiencing a skin issue, you should consider switching to an all natural shampoo bar made especially for pets.

Pet shampoo bars are hypoallergenic and made with natural, organic and vegan ingredients, provide soothing comfort, and are climate pledge friendly (biodegradable and environmentally friendly), they take up way less space than traditional plastic shampoo bottles, and best of all: no spills!

What should I Look For In A Pet Shampoo Bar?

Pet shampoo bars should contain all-natural, pet-safe ingredients, a good blend of oils and butters, and should be void of parabens and sulfates.

It’s also important to purchase shampoo bars that are made from fair trade ingredients that are sustainably sourced and harvested. And lastly they should be vegan and cruelty free.

How Do I Use A Shampoo Bar On My Dog?

After you wet your pet’s coat with water, take your shampoo bar and rub it in a circular motion on your pet’s fur, creating a lather. Be very careful not to get any soap in their eyesit will hurt due to the essential oils that shampoo bars are infused with.

Leave the lather on your pet for a few minutes, and then rinse as you would with traditional bottled shampoo. You will definitely notice a difference in your pet’s hair texture—it will be much softer.

Can I Use Dog Shampoo Bars On My Cat As Well?

Yes, you can certainly use shampoo bars on pets other than your dog(s). Most bars are made interchangeably for both cats and dogs. They also range anywhere from 3 to 8 ounces, and the best part is that many are infused with natural and hypoallergenic ingredients that create a barrier to help keep away fleas and ticks.

Below are my most recommended all-natural pet shampoo bar brands that are ethically made, contain mostly (if not all) organic ingredients, and are hypoallergenic!

Best Zero Waste Shampoo Bars For Babies And Kids

Must-Have Organic Shampoo Bars For Little Heads!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

I absolutely LOVE shampoo bars! They are so so great for the environment, save tons of space in my shower, and are so gentle on my scalp and hair!

Unlike traditional shampoo, shampoo bars are biodegradable, are not packaged in plastic, and are plant-based as well as cruelty free. These natural ingredients make them ideal for little ones who have sensitive skin, eczema and other skin conditions.

Shampoo bars also do not contain any harsh synthetic chemicals like phthalates and parabens that traditional bottled shampoo contains—which make them a perfect shampoo alternative for babies and young children.

Shampoo bars for kids are slowly gaining traction—although you can honestly use just about any organic shampoo bar on children’s hair.

The only downside to shampoo bars is that because they contain essential oils, most brands can irritate the eyes if you aren’t careful when washing your child’s hair. But, there are a unique few that are tear-free!

Shampoo bars are also wonderful space savers. I’m sure that if you’re just like me, you hate having your bathtub cluttered with tons of plastic bottles.

Shampoo bars can also double as body wash, which is a great way to save money and avoid even more synthetic chemicals making contact with your little one’s delicate skin!

Switching To A Natural Deodorant: What To Expect

I have to be honest, when it comes to natural deodorants, I didn’t even know that there was such a thing until I stumbled upon an article about them late last year, which listed all the important reasons regarding why you should make the switch from traditional deodorants; one of which was the fact that traditional deodorant contains aluminum, parabens, and other chemicals that can cause some serious damage to your health in the long run (potential breast cancer being one of them).

Following the article I decided that I would invest in one and see how it would work out for me. So I purchased one at my local grocery store. I went straight to the deodorant section and stared at all the “natural” options—and I was overwhelmed. There were so many. And many of them were over $10. But, ultimately I chose one called “Beauty and Planet”, and I chose it for several reasons.

My Natural Deodorant

For starters, it was one of the cheaper ones on the shelf (just a little over $6). It also stated that the packaging was 100% recyclable. And the third reason that I chose this particular brand was the scent. I love the scent of subtle roses.

I decided I’d try it on the next day and see how it goes. I was curious to see if the hype regarding natural deodorants would live up to the expectation.

Beauty & Planet

The day I used it, I felt sticky all day long. My arm pits literally sweat non stop, and I felt like I was in high school all over again. I was like “this isn’t going to work”. The next day, I gave it another shot.

Nope. Not happening. “I am not going out in public smelling like this”, I told myself.

So I stopped. In fact, I ranted about it on my fb page and how stupid and in effective natural deodorants were. And then a friend cyber-slapped me with a dose of reality that made me have an “aha” moment.

“These are DEODERANTS, she typed with all caps—NOT ANTIPERSPIRANTS; you’re going to sweat because your body is detoxing”.

And she was absolutely right.

Beauty & Planet

I was sweating because natural deodorants don’t stop you from perspiring. The only reason you don’t sweat with an antiperspirant is because the ingredients in them block your pores to prevent you from sweating—ingredients that natural deodorants don’t have.

So, after absorbing that bit of information and realizing the purpose of a deodorant, I decided to give it another try, and used it for a full 30 days (spoiler alert—I am still using it).

What happened in those 30 days? I sweat a lot and stunk like a teenage boy. But the smell gradually went away as my body purged itself of all those synthetic chemicals. It actually felt kind of liberating. And nothing that multiple showers a day couldn’t fix. But honestly, it felt great. And for someone who has breasts, I’m a little less worried about my health.

Am I still sweating? Absolutely. But, not even close to the extent that I was in the very beginning.

If you’re considering using a natural deodorant, I say go for it. Pick one with a scent that you like and just don’t give up on it. Use it for at least a full 30 days and then decide if you want to continue or throw in the towel.
