Reusable water bottles are getting better and better. It seems like every year, a new brand emerges with new smart technology or an existing brand improves the features of beloved designs. And that’s great, because that makes people want to ditch the single-use plastic, and invest in a great quality reusable water bottle instead.
Breaking ties with single use plastic water bottles is an amazing feeling. Because consuming water out of a single use plastic bottle isn’t just horrible for the environment, it’s also harmful to the human body. When you drink out of plastic bottles, you’re ingesting an entire petrie dish of hormone-disrupting chemicals and bacteria that can wreck havock on your health.
Purchasing a good quality reusable water bottle is the best thing that you can do not only for yourself, but for the environment. Every time a person refills a reusable water bottle, that’s one less single-use plastic water bottles that ends up in the landfill.
When shopping for a safe reusable water bottle, choose from either culinary-grade stainless steel, copper, silicone, titanium or glass. All five are the healthiest options in addition to being environmentally friendly, sustainable and recyclable.
However, like any product, there are pros and cons—so let’s take a look those before you make an informed decision.
Stainless Steel is an iron alloy with added natural elements consisting of carbon, silicon, nitrogen, chromium, nickel and manganese. It’s incredibly durable and can insulate hot and cold liquid temperatures for up to 24 hours. Some bottles can affect the water—giving it a metallic aftertaste, but that depends. Some bottles are lined to eliminate that issue. Nonetheless, it is environmentally friendly, dishwasher safe, and does not rust.
Copper is a soft metal and an essential mineral in the human body. And there is debate over whether or not drinking from a copper vessel provides several health benefits such as boosting immune health and aiding digestion. However, one fact regarding copper holds true—it’s antibacterial. Copper kills germs and virus molecules on contact—making it a healthy metal for water storage. A con is that it’s known to “sweat”. Copper does not rust and is not dishwasher safe.
Titanium is a lustrous transition metal that’s low in density, but high in strength—resulting in a phenomenal weight to strength ratio. It’s resistant to corrosion, and is non-reactive; so it won’t leach into your liquid. With that said, it doesn’t alter the taste of water like other vessels tend to do. It is dishwasher safe (best to place on top rack due to silicon ring that keeps cap from leaking). The only con is that it’s more expensive than other bottles because of all the positive attributes.
Glass is an amorphous solid formed by rapid cooling in the molten form. And though chemical compositions may vary, a common fundamental constituent is silicon dioxide. It can be recycled endlessly and doesn’t alter the taste of liquid. Glass is dishwasher safe, but has potential to break if dropped or thrown. Luckily, some bottles come with reinforcements that prevent damage—providing lovely aesthetics.
Silicone is eco-friendly and zero-waste because it’s durable. And many collapsible water bottles are made from this material because it’s durable yet soft enough to where it can be made to fold like an accordion. Silicone water bottles can also be recycled and are dishwasher safe. I’ve noticed that they do have a particular after taste, but that’s common with all water bottles (except glass).
Now that you’ve committed to ditch the plastic and are ready to invest in a healthier and eco-friendly alternative, which reusable water bottle do you buy? Which has the best features? Which one is the most durable? Which brand is best?
Let’s take a look at a few amazing brands below! Some water bottles are simple and perfect for the minimalist, some are collapsible for those that are constantly on the go, and some are “smart” for those who need a reminder to drink water. I’ve also recently discovered a new variety that are self-cleaning and kill bacteria within the water if your water bottle has been idle for way too long. Let’s take a look at all of them!
The Best Reusable Water Bottle Brands of 2021
The 3 in 1 insulated IceWater stainless steel smart water bottle has 2 really cool features. For starters, it has a portable Bluetooth speaker that unscrews from the bottom, and it also glows every hour to remind you to drink water. You can get this reusable water bottle in either narrow or wide neck, and of course, it’s BPA free. This is great for people who need a reminder to stay hydrated and it’s fun to use while engaging in outdoor recreation.
I can’t stress enough how awesome this concept is. The Crazy Cap 2.0 stainless steel water bottle by Mycrolyscs contains a UV light built straight into the cap that sterilizes your water up to 99.99 percent. This is because the UV light contains the same wavelength as UV lights in water treatment plants and operating rooms. So not only is this water bottle self-cleaning, it’s self purifying (making it especially perfect for camping ventures). Another great thing about a self purifying water bottle is that it will never develop an odor because germs don’t live long enough. Perhaps that’s why this particular water bottle won Time’s best inventions in 2020.
Hydro Flask is a well known brand and they have some of the most best insulated bottles on the planet. I recently watch a video where Hydro Flask and a few other water bottle brands were filled with hold water and placed in a freezer for a few hours. Hydro Flask beat them all, with the lowest loss of temp. So if you’re looking for quality and best insulation, then Hydro Flask is your bottle. There is also a style for every type of lifestyle, so whether you’re looking for a big jug for work, or a water bottle for the gym, you can certainly find it amongst this brand—they even have slings for the bottles!
Klean Kanteen is one of my favorite reusable water bottle brands, not just because of their awesome designs and quality, but because they are a member of 1% For The Planet. One of their best stainless steel reusable water bottles, the ‘Reflect’ water bottle shown above, has double wall insulation and a bamboo lid. Making this a very eco-friendly reusable water that’s great for outdoor recreation.
The Hydaway reusable water bottle is a food-grade silicone water bottle that collapses into a flat disc shape. I think all collapsible water bottles are awesome, but as with all things, collapsible water bottles are simply not created equal, and some are indeed better than others. This particular brand, in my opinion is better than most—because not all can collapse as flat as the HYDAWAY and literally get placed into your back pocket. They’re especially great for hiking, camping and airport travel.
ZULU caters to fitness enthusiasts who are constantly on the go. With that said, they construct their reusable glass water bottles to take a punch—sturdy with a protective silicone sleeve. Their mission is to encourage people (especially athletes) to ditch single-use water bottles—and that makes them a green company worth supporting. So if you prefer glass water bottles, but are also into sports and other outdoor recreation, then these durable water bottles are best for your lifestyle.
The Pure reusable glass water bottle comes with a stylish silicone sleeve and bamboo cap. I really like this glass water bottle because you can easily carry it around on walks or hikes. Again, as with all glass bottles, there is no strange after taste, so this is a great reusable water bottle if you prefer a clear taste yet still have that durability.
Lightweight, yet tough and durable, Vargo is the best of the best when it comes to titanium products for the outdoors. While you can use Titanium bottles at home, on a daily basis, they are especially convenient for outdoor recreation. Vargo stands behind every product they make. This bottle makes a great addition to your hiking or camping gear and you won’t be disappointed with the quality.
This 30 oz copper waterbottle by BERIGORA is handcrafted by artisans and has tons of positive customer reviews. Like all copper bottles, it will oxidize and patina, but that’s expected because natural copper oxidizes. One great thing about this brand is that it does not use any harmful lacquer coating like many others do. So if you don’t mind the metallic taste and condensation, then you might enjoy this copper water bottle.
Now that you’re informed on four great reusable bottles and four great brands, you can make the right decision for you and your loved ones. On behalf of the green community, thank you for choosing a plastic alternative and improving the quality of life of others around you—especially our environment.
