With new Covid variants constantly on the rise, it seems like face masks are not going to go away anytime soon—in fact, they’ve become just as essential as our wallets and smart phones whenever we go out.

And when it comes to face masks, many eco-conscious individuals are opting for sustainable masks to lower their carbon footprint and keep their skin healthy while protecting themselves from pathogens.

What Are Sustainable Face Masks?

“Sustainable” face masks are made from fabric that is environmentally friendly and responsibly made. In other words, they are cloth face masks that can be reused and later composted.

What Are Sustainable Face Masks Made From?

Sustainable cloth face masks are made from eco-friendly textile such as cotton, linen, hemp and bamboo viscose. There are even face masks made from recycled polyester.

I really love face masks made from hemp— because hemp is both antifungal, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and grows in abundance—it’s basically a biological regenerative ecosystem.

Other types of sustainable face masks are made from fabric like organic cotton, which uses 91 percent less water than regular cotton and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

And then there are reusable cloth masks made from bamboo fiber—which is ultra soft, anti-bacterial, and moisture wicking.

Are Sustainable Face Masks Recyclable?

Unfortunately, cloth face masks are not recyclable because they simply aren’t sanitary (no matter how well you wash them). Even thrift stores will not accept used face masks.

You can however, upcycle cloth face masks and turn them into fashion staples such as tote bags, aprons and coin purses.

How Do You Wash Reusable Face Masks?

Although many cloth face masks can be washed in the washing machine on gentle cycle, it is recommended that you hand wash your reusable mask and hang to dry (or tumble dry low).

And if you happen to have sensitive skin, consider using plant-based laundry detergent. Our faces make contact with face masks all day, everyday—so using a non-toxic laundry soap is best.

Below are some of my favorite eco-friendly and sustainable cloth face mask brands that I highly recommend if you’re someone who wants to lower their carbon footprint.
