5 Valentine’s Day Tips For Dads

5 Fun Ways That Dads And Their Kids Can Celebrate Valentine’s Day

There’s more to Valentine’s Day than just romance. It’s a day where you can appreciate all the people in your life that are special to you—and one of the most important ones are your kids.

So if you’re wondering whether or not you should get your child a Valentine’s Day gift, the answer is that, yes, you can. However, I recommend skipping the store-bought gifts and planning an experience instead—maybe even starting a Valentine’s Day tradition.

What Can I Give My Child On Valentine’s Day?

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, your kids will remember the special moments you spent together rather than what they were given.

And whatever you plan, keep it simple. Too many people are conditioned to “expect” material gifts on Valentine’s Day, instead of appreciating what they already have.

Teaching your kids about the importance of family and spending time together is a far greater gift than any plush toy or box of chocolates.

So whether you’re a single dad trying to figure out the whole parenting thing, or a seasoned dad who’s just looking for new ideas to make Valentine’s day more memorable, here are 5 ways that you can spend February 14th with your child!

Start A Breakfast Tradition

A fun tradition that dads and kids can start together is to make heart shaped pancakes every Valentine’s Day for breakfast! You can even let your kids add some of those conversation heart candies for extra fun!

Don’t like pancakes? Make some waffles! You can find a ton of heart-shaped waffle makers online. Whatever you choose to make, involve the kids, and spend the morning cooking together— it’s a fun bonding experience for all of you!

Take Her To Get Her Nails Painted

Every little girl wants to be like her mom; and getting their nails done is one of those experiences that make them feel like mommy.

So if you’re up for it, take her to the nail salon and let her experience a manicure. Many salons have non-toxic, water-based nail polish in stock, so don’t worry dads! It will easily wash off the next day!

Oh, and if you have a son instead of a daughter (or one of each), you can take your son to get a fresh new haircut—that way he feels pampered too!

Dress Up & Go Out To Eat

Let your kiddo decide where she wants to eat, and dress up in your finest! If you have a daughter, let her get dressed up like a princess! She will be smiling all night!

If you have a son, you two can go out to eat at his favorite place, and then head over to ride some go-carts, play some old-fashioned arcade games, do some bowling or play some mini golf. Many girls enjoy these activities as well!

Take Her On A Picnic

If restaurants aren’t an option, and it’s not too cold outside, then opt for a good old fashioned picnic in your backyard, the park, or a beach. Picnics are a fun way to connect with your child while getting to eat your favorite snacks.

You can pack all of your child’s favorite foods, and have a lovely time enjoying nature and having a conversation. Picnic sets are available online, or you can pack everything into lunch boxes and just grab a throw blanket.

Enjoy A Movie Night With Some Popcorn

You can end your fun Valentine’s Day at home with a movie night and some popcorn; and you can take it up a notch by using a projector instead of the television for a theater-style experience.

However, don’t just stop there! Make a fort or camp out in the living room with some sleeping bags to make movie night super cozy. Let them pick out what movie they want to watch, and just enjoy the whole experience!

Remember, Valentine’s Day is a day to connect with those you love—so make it a great one and stay safe!

10 Sustainable Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

Eco-Friendly And Sustainably Sexy Gift Ideas For Valentine’s Day

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and many eco-conscious people are asking themselves a very important question:

“How can I be more eco-friendly on Valentine’s Day?”

This is a very valid concern amongst many shoppers who have grown tired of cliché Valentine’s Day gift options that have a very short life span and produce quite a bit of carbon dioxide emissions.

Year after year, stores line their shelves with disposable trinkets, stuffed animals, boxes of chocolate, flower bouquets and helium-filled balloons.

None of it lasts very long, and quite a bit of waste is produced in the days following the February 14th holiday.

Hence, like most holidays that encourage a gift exchange, Valentine’s Day is considered bad for the environment; but, it doesn’t have to be. There are a lot of eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gift options to choose from!

What Do I Buy Someone Who Is Eco-Friendly?

Valentine’s Day, after all, is a special day on which we celebrate those we love and admire. So naturally, we want to give them a gift which conveys those “special” feelings that we have towards them.

But, what if the recipient lives a sustainable lifestyle? What should you purchase for Valentine’s Day that is low waste and won’t harm the environment?

Before we answer that, let’s discuss what you definitely do not want to buy them for Valentine’s day: balloons. That’s because waste-wise, balloons are in the same category as single-use plastic water bottles—absolutely horrible for the environment.

Flowers are another popular Valentine’s Day item that you shouldn’t buy an eco-conscious person for Valentine’s day. Sure, they make a beautiful gift, but flowers generate a ton of carbon emissions due to water usage and long-haul transport since many are imported from South American countries, and then delivered all across the United States. But, if you’re dead set on wanting to give flowers, you should go to a local farmer’s market, or forage for wild flowers.

Lastly, Valentine’s Day cards are also an unnecessary purchase that contribute to Valentine’s Day waste. Many contain embellishments like foil or glitter, making them un-recyclable. If you really want to include a message with your eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gift, write them a letter, or purchase a compostable wooden Valentine’s Day card instead.

Low Waste Valentine’s Day Gifts Are Better

When it comes to low waste Valentine’s Day gift options, you can actually get sustainable versions of traditional and popular items.

There are many chocolate brands, for example, that are fair trade and use 100% vegan ingredients—plus, they give back by donating a percentage of sales to certain organizations that help improve the environment.

There are also many jewelry brands that responsibly source their materials, and create beautiful pieces that your recipient will feel morally good about wearing.

It takes a little effort, but old-fashioned Valentine’s Day gifts can be eco-friendly if you do a little searching.

That’s why I’ve done a little research myself, and partnered with some amazing eco-friendly small businesses that sell sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts online.

Below, you’ll find sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts that are sexy, organic, reusable, recyclable, and fair-trade.

5 Eco-Friendly Valentine Ideas For Classmates

DIY Classroom Valentines With An Eco-Friendly Twist

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Every year, my child brings home a goodie bag full of cards, candy and disposable plastic trinkets that he collectively acquires from his classroom Valentine’s Day parties.

But, while those items may bring him joy for a day or two, they eventually join the rest of his bedroom clutter, or get discarded into the trash bin several days later. Either way, most valentines that your child gets from their classmates is junk. And we are guilty of contributing as well.

But this year, join me in being more sustainable by forgoing the disposable Valentine’s Day trinkets, and opting for some memorable home-made creations with an eco-friendly twist.

That’s why I’m sharing my top 5 favorite DIY eco-friendly Valentines that you and your child can easily make, and hand out to their classmates on Valentine’s Day!

10 Best Reusable Water Bottles For 2022

The Best Plastic-Free Water Bottles For Ultimate Hydration

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Your reusable water bottle goes everywhere with you! We take them with us to the gym, to work, to school and more. Hydration flasks have become just as important as our phone and wallet.

Purchasing a reusable water bottle and breaking ties with single use plastic water bottles is an amazing feeling. Because consuming water out of a disposable plastic bottle isn’t just horrible for the environment, it’s also harmful to the human body.

When you drink out of disposable plastic bottles, you’re ingesting an entire petrie dish of hormone-disrupting chemicals and bacteria that can wreck havock on your health.

Purchasing a good quality reusable water bottle is the best thing that you can do not only for yourself, but for the environment. Every time a person refills a reusable water bottle, that’s one less disposable plastic water bottle that ends up in the landfill.

How Often Do I Clean A Reusable Water Bottle?

We make contact contact with our water bottles just as much as we do with our smart phones, hence, you should clean your reusable water bottle on a daily basis to prevent bacteria from growing on the inside, and to wash away germs on the outside.

While some water bottles can easily be thrown into the dishwasher, it’s better to hand wash and allow them to air dry upside down on a bottle rack (if possible). This is because some water bottles may have an outer coating such as paint/graphics that would melt off in a hot dishwasher.

Are All Reusable Water Bottles Safe To Drink From?

Not all reusable water bottles are created equal. Some are poorly made and will only last a few years, while others are extremely durable and can last a lifetime.

What a water bottle is made from is yet another important factor to consider. Many water bottles made from hard plastic, for example, may still leach trace amounts of various chemicals, even if they claim to be BPA free.

Hence, when shopping for a safe reusable water bottle, choose from either culinary-grade stainless steel, copper, silicone, titanium or glass. All five are the healthiest options in addition to being environmentally friendly, sustainable and recyclable.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is an iron alloy with added natural elements consisting of carbon, silicon, nitrogen, chromium, nickel and manganese. It’s incredibly durable and can insulate hot and cold liquid temperatures for up to 24 hours. Some stainless steel water bottles can affect the flavor of water—giving it a metallic aftertaste, but that depends. Some bottles are lined to eliminate that issue. Nonetheless, it is environmentally friendly, dishwasher safe, and does not rust.

Copper

Copper is a soft metal and an essential mineral in the human body. And there is debate over whether or not drinking from a copper vessel provides several health benefits such as boosting immune health and aiding digestion. However, one fact regarding copper holds true—it’s antibacterial. Copper kills germs and virus molecules on contact—making it a healthy metal for water storage. A con is that copper water bottles are known to “sweat” and oxidize—turning into green shade. Copper does not rust and is not dishwasher safe.

Titanium

Titanium is a lustrous transition metal that’s low in density, but high in strength—resulting in a phenomenal weight to strength ratio. It’s lighter than steel, and stronger than aluminum. It’s resistant to corrosion, and is non-reactive; so it won’t leach into your liquid. With that said, it doesn’t alter the taste of water like other metal drinking canteens tend to do. It is also dishwasher safe (best to place on top rack due to silicon ring that keeps cap from leaking). The only con is that it’s more expensive than other bottles because of all the positive attributes.

Glass

Glass is an amorphous solid formed by rapid cooling in the molten form. And though chemical compositions may vary, a common fundamental constituent is silicon dioxide. It can be recycled endlessly and doesn’t alter the taste of liquid. Glass water bottles are dishwasher safe, but have a potential to break if dropped or thrown. Luckily, some reusable glass water bottles come with reinforcements that prevent damage—like silicone sleeves.

Silicone

Silicone is eco-friendly and zero-waste because it’s durable. And many collapsible water bottles are made from this material because it’s durable, yet soft enough to where it can be made to roll up, or fold like an accordion. Silicone water bottles can also be recycled and are dishwasher safe. I’ve noticed, however, that they do have a particular after-taste, but if you don’t mind, then the convenience of their compact construction outweighs this issue.

It’s official! Stroller wagons are here to stay!

Let’s face it, the average stroller is meant for flat sidewalks—not for rugged terrain—which makes it a bit difficult for adventurous family outings.

If you’re a parent of multiple young children, and you want a convenient way to enjoy the outdoors, you’re going to need some better equipment—you’re going to want a stroller-wagon hybrid.

What Is A Stroller Wagon?

Stroller wagons are a transportation device for babies and young children. They offer the safety and convenience of a stroller, while allowing your child to experience fun and adventure.

What Are The Benefits Of A Stroller Wagon?

Parents are investing in foldable wagons for many great reasons.

Stroller wagons are built for outdoor recreation and contain all-terrain wheels for tackling rugged terrain like hills, bumpy roads and soft sand.

Stroller wagons allow children with disabilities to participate in activities that might otherwise be too difficult for them to experience.

Foldable wagons with canopies are convenient for sporting events, and can help reduce noise and over-stimulation.

Also, while conventional strollers are meant to be pushed forward, stroller-wagon hybrids can be pushed and pulled—giving caretakers more versatility when it comes to movement.

At What Age Can A Baby Ride In A Stroller Wagon?

Because a stroller wagon requires that a child be able to sit up and use a safety harness, they are not recommended for babies under 6 months of age.

However, many tactical strollers let you purchase accessories which allow you to attach a car seat—making it easy for parents to transport both a toddler and a young baby simultaneously.

What Should I Look For In A Stroller Wagon?

Stroller wagons come in a variety of sizes and styles to meet your lifestyle and physical needs. Some are lightweight and aesthetically simple, while others are a tad bit heavier and rigged with an eco system of accessories.

Safety Features

When shopping for a stroller wagon, make sure that the brand and model meet all the necessary safety guidelines and contain safety features such as brakes and safety harnesses.

Weight Capacity

The importance of this feature will depend on how many children you will be placing into your stroller wagon. Some wagons can support up to 110 pounds, while others can carry up to 300lbs. Hence, make sure you choose a wagon that can grow with your little ones, and can support as much weight as possible.

Canopy

Not all stroller wagons come equipped with a canopy—in fact, some require that you purchase them as add ons. But, if you’re going to be spending a lot of time outdoors, it is a good idea to purchase a wagon with sun protection.

Below are 5 of the best stroller-wagon hybrids on the market that parents are loving right now.
