Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and many eco-conscious people are asking themselves a very important question:

“How can I be more eco-friendly on Valentine’s Day?”

This is a very valid concern amongst many shoppers who have grown tired of cliché Valentine’s Day gift options that have a very short life span and produce quite a bit of carbon dioxide emissions.

Year after year, stores line their shelves with disposable trinkets, stuffed animals, boxes of chocolate, flower bouquets and helium-filled balloons.

None of it lasts very long, and quite a bit of waste is produced in the days following the February 14th holiday.

Hence, like most holidays that encourage a gift exchange, Valentine’s Day is considered bad for the environment; but, it doesn’t have to be. There are a lot of eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gift options to choose from!

What Do I Buy Someone Who Is Eco-Friendly?

Valentine’s Day, after all, is a special day on which we celebrate those we love and admire. So naturally, we want to give them a gift which conveys those “special” feelings that we have towards them.

But, what if the recipient lives a sustainable lifestyle? What should you purchase for Valentine’s Day that is low waste and won’t harm the environment?

Before we answer that, let’s discuss what you definitely do not want to buy them for Valentine’s day: balloons. That’s because waste-wise, balloons are in the same category as single-use plastic water bottles—absolutely horrible for the environment.

Flowers are another popular Valentine’s Day item that you shouldn’t buy an eco-conscious person for Valentine’s day. Sure, they make a beautiful gift, but flowers generate a ton of carbon emissions due to water usage and long-haul transport since many are imported from South American countries, and then delivered all across the United States. But, if you’re dead set on wanting to give flowers, you should go to a local farmer’s market, or forage for wild flowers.

Lastly, Valentine’s Day cards are also an unnecessary purchase that contribute to Valentine’s Day waste. Many contain embellishments like foil or glitter, making them un-recyclable. If you really want to include a message with your eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gift, write them a letter, or purchase a compostable wooden Valentine’s Day card instead.

Low Waste Valentine’s Day Gifts Are Better

When it comes to low waste Valentine’s Day gift options, you can actually get sustainable versions of traditional and popular items.

There are many chocolate brands, for example, that are fair trade and use 100% vegan ingredients—plus, they give back by donating a percentage of sales to certain organizations that help improve the environment.

There are also many jewelry brands that responsibly source their materials, and create beautiful pieces that your recipient will feel morally good about wearing.

It takes a little effort, but old-fashioned Valentine’s Day gifts can be eco-friendly if you do a little searching.

That’s why I’ve done a little research myself, and partnered with some amazing eco-friendly small businesses that sell sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts online.

Below, you’ll find sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts that are sexy, organic, reusable, recyclable, and fair-trade.
