Creating a calming bedtime routine for kids can be a fantastic way to help them wind down and get a good night’s rest.
It is very important for kids to get enough sleep because sleeps helps the body and mind to rest and recharge, and is essential for a child’s growth and development.
With that said, kids need around 10-12 hours of sleep each night, depending on their age. Without enough sleep, a child can become cranky, irritable, and unable to focus.
I understand how difficult it can be to find the right bedtime routine for your child. That’s why I’m sharing our child’s calming bedtime routine. It has helped our family create a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere before bed, and I hope it can do the same for yours.
We strive to use only non-toxic sleep essentials for our child. We believe that this is important for their safety and wellbeing, and we want to ensure that they are sleeping in a safe and healthy environment.
We take the time to research and find the best non-toxic sleep essentials that are available, so that our child can have a peaceful and restful sleep every night, and we’re happy to share them with you.
7 Tips For Creating A Sustainable And Calming Bedtime Routine For Kids
1. Decide On A Bedtime
Start by establishing a consistent bedtime routine for your child. This will help them develop healthy sleep habits and ensure that they get the necessary rest they need.
Start by setting a bedtime that works for your child’s age and lifestyle, and stick to it every night. Children thrive when it comes to consistency, so choose a bedtime that works for the whole family.
2. Give Them A Soothing Bath
To help your child relax and prepare for bed, give them a warm lavender-scented bath, and let them splash around with their favorite non-toxic bath toy.
Start by filling the bathtub with warm water, and add a few drops of organic lavender essential oil. Let your child soak in the water for at least 10 minutes, allowing the calming scent of the lavender to soothe them.
After the bath, dry your child off with a soft bamboo towel (we use an adorable one by Kea Babies), get them into their favorite organic pajamas, and follow up with their skincare and oral hygiene routine before heading off to bed. See our tips for a non-toxic bath time routine for more tips!
3. Prepare Their Bed With Organic Bedding
Children should sleep on organic bedding such as cotton, wool, or bamboo, which are free from harsh chemicals and other toxins. This makes organic bedding much safer and healthier for children, as it does not contain any potentially harmful substances.
Our daughter’s bedding consists of organic cotton sheets and an ultra fluffy “My Little Dreamy Pillow” by Kea Babies. The pillow shell and whimsical casing that it comes with is 100% organic, which is perfect for a child’s delicate skin. You’ll also feel at ease knowing that their pillow won’t off-gas any toxins while they enjoy their sweet slumber.
4. Set The Scene
When we put our daughter to bed, we dim the lights and leave on her favorite nightlight while we read to her. Night lights create a cozy atmosphere in a room, and provide a warm, inviting glow that make a room feel more comfortable and inviting. This also signals to your child that it is time to start winding down and preparing for sleep.
Next, spray the room with your favorite cozy DIY essential oil spray. I love alternating between a vanilla scent and chocolate. It makes a small space smell heavenly and makes your bedtime ritual ultra soothing.
5. Softly Read Their Favorite Book
Every night, I make sure to read my child their favorite book before bed. Currently, we are reading the beautifully written and illustrated “ABC God Loves Me” book by Rose Rossner. The illustrations are super dreamy and take me back to my own childhood.
When reading, I always whisper the words, so that my child can drift off to sleep with the soothing sound of my voice in their ears. They love the story and the comfort of being tucked in. I can see the joy in their eyes as I read, and it always fills me with warmth. It’s a special moment that I cherish and look forward to every night.
6. Tuck Them In With A Weighted Blanket
I carefully tuck my daughter into bed, making sure she is comfortable and cozy. I place a weighted blanket on top of her, as it helps her to relax and fall asleep more quickly.
Weighted blankets are filled with tiny pellets or beads that provide a gentle, calming pressure on the body, similar to a hug. This pressure can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.
Weighted blankets have been found to help children with anxiety, ADHD, autism, and other conditions that can make it difficult to get a restful night’s sleep. They can also help children who have difficulty settling down in the evening and staying asleep throughout the night.
7. Always Give A Goodnight Kiss
It is important to always give your child a goodnight kiss before they go to bed. This simple gesture can show your child that you love them and that you are there for them.
A good night kiss can also provide a sense of security and comfort, which can help them have a restful night’s sleep. A goodnight kiss is a small but meaningful way to show your child that you care.
Optional | Add A Sound Machine
My oldest child is a very light sleeper, so we have found that a sound machine helps them to drift off to sleep more easily. We have noticed that he really enjoys the soothing sound of the machine, and it has become a part of his nightly routine.
