How To Repurpose Bicycle Helmets

Unique And Creative Ways To Upcycle Your Outdated Bike Helmet When Recycling Isn’t An Option

Helmets have a limited lifespan—kind of like infant car seats. After some time, the parts of a helmet—such as the foam and adhesives, begin to degrade—resulting in a subpar level of protection.

Because of this, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), recommends replacing a bicycle helmet every five to 10 years, which basically places helmets in the category of disposable products.

In that case, you absolutely must buy a new helmet, but what is the fate of the outdated one? What if you don’t want to send the old bicycle or motorcycle helmet off to the landfill? What are the alternative options?

Option 1: Recycle

One option is to call your local recycling center and ask if they recycle the plastic portion of the helmet. If that’s the case, you can take the helmet apart and place the plastic casing into your recycling bin. I’ll be honest, they probably won’t accept them. But don’t be discouraged, because there are other pretty cool alternatives to landfill disposal.

Ten years ago in Portland, Oregon, a helmet recycling program was in the works, but unfortunately, it never went anywhere. I believe the man behind the concept didn’t have enough investors or something to help him build a facility with necessary equipment. That’s too bad.

Another option is to send your helmet into a recycling program called TerraCycle who would take it apart and repurpose the components—BUT, I believe you have to order a special shipping box and it’s kind of expensive. A small zero-waste shipping box costs around $130.00 but, it can be filled with as many sporting goods as you can fit—so in addition to the helmet, you can get rid of other unwanted items that are just laying around in your garage. The question is, do you want to spend that much money?

Option 2: Donate

You can donate your old bicycle or motorcycle helmet to your local emergency response department (like the fire station) for training purposes. They will happily take your helmets and use them to teach their students how to safely remove a helmet when a motorist is injured.

Never donate an outdated helmet to an active motorist or cyclist—this is irresponsible and can cause a head injury and even death.

Option 3: Upcycle

Another great option is to upcycle your old helmet into something purposeful. Many people opt to turn their helmets into planters, which look unique and add charm and character to a backyard or garden. Simply line the bottom with some newspaper and add soil and seeds, or transplant an existing plant into it.

Many people also repurpose old bike helmets into unique lanterns and lamps that look awesome in a man cave, garage or even kids’ room.

Need a bowl? Bike helmets work amazingly well as fruit or popcorn bowls! You can paint them and use them in the home or break room at work for this exact purpose! Perhaps you have a Stars Wars fan in your life, in which case you can paint the helmet in the likeness of R2D2 or BB8 and create a Star Wars themed snack bowl!

And lastly, they can be painted and transformed into Halloween candy bowls or used for trick or treating! The strap easily works as a “bucket handle”. And they can most certainly be crafted into a costume accessory or scary yard display during the spooky season as well!

Until bicycle helmets are manufactured to be sustainable and recyclable, these are the best options for keeping old helmets out of the landfill—and they’re not such bad options.

Below are some amazing and creative examples of repurposed bicycle and motorcycle helmets to help inspire you! I hope you enjoy these ideas and please give these talented folks below a follow!

Have you ever dyed your hair with traditional at-home hair color and almost had to call 911 because the fumes nearly killed you? I think we all made that mistake one time or another. Unfortunately, vegan hair dye wasn’t always available on store shelves. But, these days, they are plentiful, and some of the colors are incredibly fun, flirty and vibrant.

So what are your plans this summer? No, really! Let me know in the comments!

Last summer was a dud due to Covid, but this year, you get a chance to go out and actually live. And what better way to celebrate than to give your hair a little makeover with some ethical vegan hair color that’ll turn heads!

Vegan hair dye is:

  • PPD Free
  • Paraben Free
  • Ammonia Free
  • GMO Free
  • Cruelty Free

And I wish that all hair dye consisted of these qualities, but unfortunately, they don’t. Not only is traditional dye horrible for your health, it’s also bad for the environment, because you’re rinsing it out in sink, and all of those chemicals go down the drain.

Vegan hair dye on the other hand, is nontoxic and eco-friendly, so you won’t feel bad about using it. And many are semi-permanent, which is great because you get to experiment with different shades without damaging your hair!

So this summer, change it up a notch, and enjoy life! Metallic type of shades like greys and silver are tending this year—and you’ll look great at the beach, raves or wherever else life takes you. Take a look below for some inspiration and have fun responsibly!

Punky Semi-Permanent Vegan Hair Colour

Best Eco-Friendly And Non-Toxic Dog Beds

Sustainable And Non-toxic Dog Beds Made With Your Pet’s Health In Mind

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Pet owners go above and beyond when it comes to their dog’s nutrition. We will literally buy the most expensive dog food, or feed them a fancy raw diet if it means that they’ll have a longer lifespan and overall better quality of life. And dog food commercials do a great job of validating these concerns.

But why stop at dog food?

It’s a serious question. Why is dog food the only product that pet owners focus on when it comes to pet health. Why isn’t a focus on pet beds just as important as what dog food brand we buy?

Just like people, dogs sleep. They also age faster than humans and inherit physical issues like hip pain, arthritis, and skin issues like dermatitis, which can greatly be relieved with the right type of bed.

Dogs are members of the family who, just like people, need to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to live a long and happy life. If they sleep on something with cheap construction, then that will affect their physical health in the long run because certain chemicals in traditional dog beds can mess with your pet’s endocrine and hormone system.

Due to consumer demand, more and more pet beds are being made with pet health in mind. And that involves eco-friendly, organic, hypoallergenic, sustainable and nontoxic material that’s healthy enough for your pet to relax on. There are no toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, ozone depleters, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals that can be harmful to your beloved pet—yet many companies continue to make beds out of these ingredients.

Some of best ways to minimize skin problems in dogs is to actually stay away from cheap, synthetic dogs beds and opt for natural and organic pet beds. Bamboo, organic cotton, organic latex, and hemp are some of the best material that make up high quality dog beds.

If you have children, then consider what they sleep on. Surely they don’t sleep on hard cots, am I right? No! They have their own comfortable beds where they feel safe and cozy at night, and wake up feeling refreshed. The same should go for our pets.

With that said, below are some of the best eco-friendly dog beds that you can buy. It’s a good investment—especially because your dog’s health is worth it.

OMI Organic Cotton Pet Bed

OMI

OMI pet beds are made with certified organic cotton and natural rubber—two elements that are sewn in different compartments—allowing your pet to alternate comfort levels. Bean Products Organic Hemp Pet Bed

Bean Products

This soft and comfortable eco-friendly pet bed by Bean Products is available in various sizes—from xx small to XX large. It’s made from organic hemp and filled with pre-consumer recycled shredded CertiPUR foam. The cover is removable and washable, and since hemp doesn’t rot, you won’t have to worry about this fabric getting wet.

Green Breathe Eco

Green Breathe Eco

This odor-control pet bed by Green Breathe Eco is infused with activated charcoal, which absorbs and neutralizes pet odor. The removable and washable canvas is made from eco-friendly and biodegradable suede, and the mattress itself is waterproof.

NaturoPet Natural Wool And Cotton Dog Bed

Unique Hand-Made Shampoo Bars You Need To Lather Up With!

Updated February 6, 2022

The Organic Shampoo Bars You’ll Fall In Love With!

A few years ago, the glorious shampoo bar emerged and challenged the norm of traditional haircare. The beauty industry was overflowing with plastic packaging and eventually consumers began to feel suffocated with all the BPA and artificial ingredients that did more harm than good. So little by little, female consumers began to test out solid shampoo in the form of bars—and they liked it!

Shampoo bar manufacturing thus, became a big deal. And many small companies began to create different variations of these little bars. Eventually, men too, began to see the benefits of these gems on their hair and beards and demanded their own masculine shampoo bar lines—which did indeed happen (read about the best men’s shampoos here).

Fast shampoo bar manufacturing, just like fast fashion, can be a problem. Before long, many shampoo bar companies began to use ingredients that weren’t healthy. Some even went as far as to hide their ingredient list.

Why Shop At Apple Valley Natural Soap?

The solution to finding a good non-toxic shampoo bar is to buy from a small business that’s transparent about their ingredients—whether from your local Farmer’s Market or a family owned business online. There aren’t too many, but we know of one that is really great and their products are all natural and hand-made—shampoo bars and soaps that look and smell so good, you’ll be tempted to take a bite of one!

Meet Apple Valley Natural Soap Co— The company was purchased a few years back by a female entrepreneur whose hobby was soap making—it still is! And with the help of her family, they sell some of the most wonderful shampoo bars in the country.

Apple Valley Natural Soap.com sells women’s, men’s, kids, and even pet shampoo bars that are incredibly gentle, aesthetically beautiful, and have fun names to match.

Apple Valley Natural Soap also disclose product ingredients under every product and even provide directions with how to use them—going above and beyond for their customers.

And they don’t just sell shampoo bars—Apple Valley Soap co also creates relaxing bath and body gift sets and beard grooming kits—in addition to luxurious body butters, hair rinses, soy candles and hemp skin care products which are all vegan.

Apple Valley Natural Soap products are also shipped in compostable, plastic free packaging and beautifully wrapped! My latest order pictured before are two half size bars which are Pink Lemonade (for my daughter) and The Cowboy Bar (for my son).

Let me quickly tell you—both of my kids love the scent of these shampoo bars! My daughter said “wow, this bar smells like pink Starburst candy!” Also, the lather is luxurious. My daughter has long hair down to her waist and this shampoo bar leaves her hair incredibly soft and helps detangle it!

With that said, I’m going to show you a few products that Apple Valley Natural Soap sells which are amazing, affordable and best of all, cruelty free!

Sustainable Closet Organization Tips to Maximize Your Storage Space

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

A woman’s closet is her sanctuary. It stores all of her favorite fashion finds, shoes, and accessories—it’s sort of like a giant filing cabinet full of important belongings that we need to access several times a day.

So when our closet becomes disorganized, which they often tend to do, it makes us feel stressed out. It also takes longer to find specific items, and can even make it more difficult to get ready on time—especially in the mornings.

Luckily, there are a lot of ways to organize your closet and give it the makeover of your dreams. And a lot of storage accessories come in eco-friendly and sustainable options that are pretty functional and stylish.

From shelving units to storage bins and dressers, many come in environmentally friendly options that allow you to get creative with your closet organization.

Save Ralph: The Short Film That Highlights Animal Testing

The Humane Society’s New Animated Short That’s Leaving A Lasting Impression Regarding Cosmetic Testing On Animals

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

The Humane Society International has recently released an animated short film focusing on animal testing—and it truly leaves a lasting impression.

The film begins with a rabbit sitting on the sofa in his apartment. His name is Ralph. He’s dressed in a suit and tie, and he discusses his physical disabilities. He lets the audience know that he’s blind in one eye, has hearing loss in one ear and has a chemical burn on his back which hurts nonstop.

Throughout his interview, he’s seen doing everyday tasks that average humans do—he brushes his teeth, he eats cereal out of a bowl, and he mentions family, who unfortunately, have all died doing what he’s doing—animal testing.

In the midst of eating his breakfast, Ralph is then seen being taken from his apartment by a large human hand and is placed in a laboratory. He is restrained while human researchers apply some sort of liquid chemical into his good eye. His friends, and fellow ‘lab prisoners’ who are restrained along side him all yell and plead with the camera crew to help them.

At the end of the film you see a battered Ralph in a locker room, who unfortunately is blind in both eyes now, and the audience can even catch a glimpse of the chemical burn that’s on his back. For him, it’s just an ordinary day. He feels as though he’s merely doing his job to please humans. He knows that he can be like ‘normal’ rabbits enjoying freedom out in a field somewhere, but shrugs the idea off—he accepts his fate. Tomorrow he will wake up and do it all over again.

What makes this stop-motion animated feature so effective? I mean, society has been introduced to graphic images of animal cruelty in the past—and yet none of those former animal rights campaigns have left a lasting impression as powerful as “Save Ralph”. And I think I know why that is.

The first reason as to why this film is so popular and successful is because the animated short is a mockumentary; meaning, it consists of fictional characters and events which are presented documentary style.

It presents the animal (Ralph) in human-like form. He has a house and wears clothing. He has a voice and a story to tell. He easily reminds you of a friend or family member—maybe even yourself. In an odd way, it’s simply relatable.

The second reason behind the success of this campaign is that the film doesn’t just show the physical pain that these animals go through—it showcases the mental health of these lab rabbits as well. Ralph is clinically depressed, but because this is the only life he’s ever known, he thinks it’s normal. And it’s heartbreaking to watch. He believes that sacrificing his body for humans is “worth it”, and it’s sad to hear him say that.

The purpose of “Save Ralph” is to raise awareness in regards to animal testing and the cruelty involved. Lab animals literally have no quality of life. In a press release, the creators of the film stated that the goal of the film is to:

“shed light on the suffering of animals and involve consumers and policy makers in HSI’s mission to ban cosmetic testing on animals.”

They’ve done a fantastic job.

The film stars Taika Waititi as Ralph and Ricky Gervais as the interviewer. Additional cast members include Zac Efron, Olivia Munn, Pom Klementieff, Tricia Helfer and Rodrigo Santoro.

Food waste and plastic food packaging is a huge problem in the United States, and more people are turning to zero-waste gurus like Anne-Marie Bonneau, blogger and Author of her newest cookbook “The Zero-Waste Chef” to learn how to live and cook more sustainably.

Ann-Marie Bonneau has been living waste free since 2011, and via her blog, has shared many amazing tips and tricks to live a zero waste lifestyle—especially in the kitchen, where no plastic is used and no food scraps go to waste.

In fact, Bonneau teaches you how to regrow vegetable scraps by allowing them to sprout in water and then replanting them in soil—a brilliant sustainable solution.

The Zero Waste Chef | Source: Instagram

This cookbook is a much needed staple in every kitchen, because as consumers we overspend on food that often times, doesn’t even get cooked and rots in the back of the fridge. And when we do cook, we tend to throw away large left over portions or food scraps that we think have zero value. In her cookbook, Bonneau shows us just how wrong we are with that kind of mentality!

Bonneau’s book “The Zero-Waste Chef” contains 75 vegetarian and vegan recipes to include simple tips and fixes for storing leftovers and using the scraps for your next recipe. In fact, the cool thing about these recipes is that you plan your next meal based on what you have rather than what you need. It’s saves time, money, improves your overall well-being and fights climate change by reducing your carbon footprint.

So if you’re wanting to begin a zero waste journey, or are simply looking for healthy recipes that omit plastic and unhealthy preservatives, then “The Zero-Waste Chef” is a great addition to your kitchen.

“In my debut book, I give readers the facts to motivate them to do better, the simple (and usually free) fixes to ease them into wasting less—you can, for example, banish plastic wrap by simply inverting in a plate over your leftovers—and, finally, the recipes and strategies to turn them into more sustainable, money-saving cooks.” — Anne Marie Bonneau

If you’re on the hunt for eco friendly footwear, then you’re one of many women who are turning away from fast-fashion and opting for carbon-neutral alternatives that don’t pollute the planet.

When it comes to shoes, we as consumers are so accustomed to buying pair after pair of shoes that we never really stop and ask where they’re sourced from, what they’re made of or where they were manufactured.

Many people don’t know that ethically sourced footwear even exists, and those who have heard of such market are skeptical of durability and price.

Sustainable and ethically sourced shoes are actually extremely durable and in most cases, stylish. And when it comes to price tag, they typically run anywhere from $50 to $100–which is actually not bad considering what a pair of Nikes goes for these days.

Ethical shoes are also manufactured in ethical factories—meaning that workers get proper pay and humane work conditions.

In this article, you’ll find our favorite sustainable shoe brands who craft their footwear from recycled and eco friendly plant material(s), like hemp and organic cotton and even banana fibers.

So, you’ve recently changed up your hair care routine and switched to a shampoo bar. Or maybe you’re bar-curious and doing some research prior to making the switch from traditional shampoo. Whatever the case may be, everyone always has the same question:

“How do I store my shampoo bar?”

And that’s a very valid question, because honestly, shampoo bars can be jerks. Here’s why.

Just like a bar of soap, a wet shampoo bar will cement itself onto a flat surface—only, it’s way more difficult to pry off than regular soap. And when it’s finally removed, a good amount of it is left on the surface of your sink or shower.

So now, not only are you stuck scraping off hard chunks of soap, you’re also left with a smaller bar. It’s the equivalent of accidentally knocking over a bottle of liquid shampoo and watching it pour down the drain. What a waste.

Why is that?

There’s actually a very simple explanation for that. You see, shampoo bars consist mostly of “fatty” oils and butters (like shea, coconut, castor and other varieties). Those natural oils are what make shampoo bars work so well to nourish and moisturize the scalp and hair.

Most are also full of essential oils for added scent. And when these ingredients become wet and are then made to dry against a flat surface, the oils and butters create a slimy layer, solidify, and adhere to surfaces. When this happens, your shampoo bar can’t get proper ventilation, will hoard bacteria, and overtime, go rancid.

That’s why it’s so important to store your soap and shampoo bars properly.

Shampoo bars come in all shapes and sizes, but no matter if they’re a circle, square or heart, they’re mostly created flat—without curves like some soaps tend to have. Hence, when looking for a tray or bar holder, you need to consider both the material and the design.

For example, you don’t want to get something that’s equally flat with no drainage. That’s just as bad as laying your shampoo bar on the sink. Look for a soap dish design that has spaces in between, allowing air to reach and ventilate the surface of your bar. It will also help drain excess liquid.

It’s also a good idea to get something sustainable—like wood/bamboo, ceramic or stainless steel. They’ll last longer, and some of these will biodegrade over time if you throw them out. But if you’re more into aesthetics and you find a great plastic soap dish that’s recyclable, and will last a very long time, that’s fine too.
