There are a ton of reusable straws on the market these days. But when it comes to kids, a majority of “reusable” straws that you see online or in the store are made of plastic. Granted, these reusable plastic straws are BPA free and perfectly safe to use, they’re still not eco friendly because they’re not recyclable, biodegradable, or zero-waste.
In my opinion, the best reusable and zero waste straws for kids are made of silicone. Silicone straws are durable yet soft enough on the teeth, and they don’t absorb hot or cold temperatures like metal straws do. Plus, they last a very, very long time—making them sustainable and zero-waste because there’s no need to replace them.
Silicone straws are also dishwasher safe and just as easy to clean as any other reusable straw. And that’s important, because when it comes to kids, a whole lot of goo gets absorbed into these straws. My daughter is constantly using her reusable straws whenever she has a drinkable yogurt, a smoothie or any other thick beverage.
With that said, below you’ll find five of the best reusable straws for kids (all silicone) that your child will really love!
AMALKA + ALBERT
These reusable silicone straws by Amalka + Albert are made from food grade silicone and are adorned with little animal friends, which kids love. They add so much fun to these little straws! This set comes with 4 silicone straws and one straw brush cleaner.
These silicone straws by Nightingale come in a set of 6 and have bendable tips which prevent spilling. They’re made from 100 percent platinum cured silicone which is much softer than natural silicone and are chew mark resistant.
These silicone straws for kids by Softy Straws come in a set of four with a squeegee straw cleaning tool that gets all that gunk out, and keeps your child’s straws nice and clean. These straws are bendy, collapsible, flexible and perfect for thin liquids as well as thick smoothies!
These reusable silicone straws by Tegion come in a set of 6 and include one straw cleaning brush. These straws are designed for sippy cups, but can be used in any small tumbler, mug and other small beverage containers. Mom can even borrow one to use in her wine glass!
These reusable silicone straws for kids by Mood Straws are awesome because they change color in cold liquid! These silicone straws come with a squeegee cleaning tool and are great for both thin and thick liquids. You can get these straws in two colors: berry and ocean.

Are you searching for an alternative to traditional [bottled] pet shampoo ? You are not alone in your quest! Many pet owners are making the switch to cleansing products that are non-toxic, and made with natural ingredients that even their furry companions seem to love.
Dogs are important members of the family, and just like people, dogs are prone to skin issues. From dry, itchy skin due to allergies, to more serious health problems like mites, fleas, and ticks. And the biggest mistake that we, as pet owners make, is subjecting them to harsh chemicals which only makes the problem worse.
Can Pet Shampoo Bars Help With Skin Problems?
As someone who has owned and fostered a great number of dogs throughout the years, I’ve seen and experienced first hand, various skin issues that plague certain breeds.
With that said, we once adopted a male German Shepherd who had a horrible case of mange mites, which caused horrible redness and lesions throughout his entire body—the worst of it being around his groin area.
And although it eventually cleared up with prescription medication, he continued to live a life with sensitive skin that required a special diet and alternative [all-natural] shampoo, which kept his skin from becoming irritated and inflamed.
If your pet is also experiencing a skin issue, you should consider switching to an all natural shampoo bar made especially for pets.
Pet shampoo bars are hypoallergenic and made with natural, organic and vegan ingredients, provide soothing comfort, and are climate pledge friendly (biodegradable and environmentally friendly), they take up way less space than traditional plastic shampoo bottles, and best of all: no spills!
What should I Look For In A Pet Shampoo Bar?
Pet shampoo bars should contain all-natural, pet-safe ingredients, a good blend of oils and butters, and should be void of parabens and sulfates.
It’s also important to purchase shampoo bars that are made from fair trade ingredients that are sustainably sourced and harvested. And lastly they should be vegan and cruelty free.
How Do I Use A Shampoo Bar On My Dog?
After you wet your pet’s coat with water, take your shampoo bar and rub it in a circular motion on your pet’s fur, creating a lather. Be very careful not to get any soap in their eyes—it will hurt due to the essential oils that shampoo bars are infused with.
Leave the lather on your pet for a few minutes, and then rinse as you would with traditional bottled shampoo. You will definitely notice a difference in your pet’s hair texture—it will be much softer.
Can I Use Dog Shampoo Bars On My Cat As Well?
Yes, you can certainly use shampoo bars on pets other than your dog(s). Most bars are made interchangeably for both cats and dogs. They also range anywhere from 3 to 8 ounces, and the best part is that many are infused with natural and hypoallergenic ingredients that create a barrier to help keep away fleas and ticks.
Below are my most recommended all-natural pet shampoo bar brands that are ethically made, contain mostly (if not all) organic ingredients, and are hypoallergenic!
The Best All-Natural Shampoo Bars For Dogs

I absolutely LOVE shampoo bars! They are so so great for the environment, save tons of space in my shower, and are so gentle on my scalp and hair!
Unlike traditional shampoo, shampoo bars are biodegradable, are not packaged in plastic, and are plant-based as well as cruelty free. These natural ingredients make them ideal for little ones who have sensitive skin, eczema and other skin conditions.
Shampoo bars also do not contain any harsh synthetic chemicals like phthalates and parabens that traditional bottled shampoo contains—which make them a perfect shampoo alternative for babies and young children.
Shampoo bars for kids are slowly gaining traction—although you can honestly use just about any organic shampoo bar on children’s hair.
The only downside to shampoo bars is that because they contain essential oils, most brands can irritate the eyes if you aren’t careful when washing your child’s hair. But, there are a unique few that are tear-free!
Shampoo bars are also wonderful space savers. I’m sure that if you’re just like me, you hate having your bathtub cluttered with tons of plastic bottles.
Shampoo bars can also double as body wash, which is a great way to save money and avoid even more synthetic chemicals making contact with your little one’s delicate skin!
With that said, I am familiar with several shampoo bar brands that cater specifically to babies and kids.
Each shampoo bar brand is also climate pledge friendly, and contain organic ingredients that are cruelty-free and plant based.

The brand was started by a mom who homeschooled her 14 children and wanted to create an all natural product that would also help improve local economy.
The indigenous “super hero” ingredients consisting of Shea Nilotik Shea butter and baobab (monkey tree oil) make this bar especially gentle on the skin. And don’t forget about the banana fruit extract that makes this shampoo bar smell so good!
Dirty Kids Organics—Such a fun name for a shampoo bar! This bar is a multi-use product that can double as face wash and body wash because it is so gentle! In fact, the company states that it’s great for baby cradle cap, eczema and acne prone skin. I have to be honest, when it comes to natural deodorants, I didn’t even know that there was such a thing until I stumbled upon an article about them late last year, which listed all the important reasons regarding why you should make the switch from traditional deodorants; one of which was the fact that traditional deodorant contains aluminum, parabens, and other chemicals that can cause some serious damage to your health in the long run (potential breast cancer being one of them).
Following the article I decided that I would invest in one and see how it would work out for me. So I purchased one at my local grocery store. I went straight to the deodorant section and stared at all the “natural” options—and I was overwhelmed. There were so many. And many of them were over $10. But, ultimately I chose one called “Beauty and Planet”, and I chose it for several reasons.
For starters, it was one of the cheaper ones on the shelf (just a little over $6). It also stated that the packaging was 100% recyclable. And the third reason that I chose this particular brand was the scent. I love the scent of subtle roses.
I decided I’d try it on the next day and see how it goes. I was curious to see if the hype regarding natural deodorants would live up to the expectation.
The day I used it, I felt sticky all day long. My arm pits literally sweat non stop, and I felt like I was in high school all over again. I was like “this isn’t going to work”. The next day, I gave it another shot.
Nope. Not happening. “I am not going out in public smelling like this”, I told myself.
So I stopped. In fact, I ranted about it on my fb page and how stupid and in effective natural deodorants were. And then a friend cyber-slapped me with a dose of reality that made me have an “aha” moment.
“These are DEODERANTS, she typed with all caps—NOT ANTIPERSPIRANTS; you’re going to sweat because your body is detoxing”.
And she was absolutely right.
I was sweating because natural deodorants don’t stop you from perspiring. The only reason you don’t sweat with an antiperspirant is because the ingredients in them block your pores to prevent you from sweating—ingredients that natural deodorants don’t have.
So, after absorbing that bit of information and realizing the purpose of a deodorant, I decided to give it another try, and used it for a full 30 days (spoiler alert—I am still using it).
What happened in those 30 days? I sweat a lot and stunk like a teenage boy. But the smell gradually went away as my body purged itself of all those synthetic chemicals. It actually felt kind of liberating. And nothing that multiple showers a day couldn’t fix. But honestly, it felt great. And for someone who has breasts, I’m a little less worried about my health.
Am I still sweating? Absolutely. But, not even close to the extent that I was in the very beginning.
If you’re considering using a natural deodorant, I say go for it. Pick one with a scent that you like and just don’t give up on it. Use it for at least a full 30 days and then decide if you want to continue or throw in the towel.
Other Natural Deodorant Brands that may work for you:
Native Deodorant can be used by both men and women. Like all natural Deodorants, it is aluminum and paraben free.
Viking Revolution is a natural deodorant designed for men in mind, but can also be used by women who enjoy the scent of tee tree.
Natural Deodorant Wipes are great because you can take them on the go and use them just about anywhere to freshen up. Especially during the initial few weeks of detoxing when you’re smelling extra funky. Check out all the best varieties here.
If you have used or are using a natural deodorant, please share your experience in the comments!

More and more parents are becoming eco-conscious consumers, especially when it comes to toys. They’re beginning to question what certain toys are made of and if they were ethically and sustainably manufactured. Because these things matter.
Many parents are also embracing minimalism, and choosing quality over quantity. You can either have a cluttered room full of cheap toys and gadgets that eventually get tossed into the trash, or you can have a few simple and eco-friendly toys that are high quality and are capable of biodegrading—like natural rubber dolls!
Dolls are an excellent toy. They’re crucial for emotional development and teach a child important social skills like empathy, compassion and responsibility. But, unfortunately, many popular dolls on the market are made from pvc plastic—and many people don’t care. But you should. I’ll tell you why.
The typical plastic doll is made from PVC Plastic. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a carcinogen. And we all know that carcinogens increase the risk of cancer. What makes PVC a carcinogen? Because it’s comprised of chemicals such as mercury, lead, phthalates and other heavy metals which also disrupt hormones and contribute to developmental delays.
These chemicals invade your child’s body through the process of offgassing. Offgassing is when chemicals leach into the environment. Have you ever smelled a new toy or the inside of a new car? It has a very distinct smell, doesn’t it. That’s offgassing. And it occurs the most with dolls made of soft plastic—especially new ones, straight from the factory, and old ones with rips and tears. Now imagine a baby or young toddler getting their mouths on this stuff. Gross, right?
According to the children’s environmental health network (cehn.org) “young children have the natural tendency to mouth soft plastics, which can lead to exposure to PVC through ingestion. Chewing on a plastic toy creates small openings (often microscopic) in the plastic, providing an avenue for leaching of chemicals from the toy into a child’s mouth.”
Those are some really disturbing facts. And what’s worse is that PVC isn’t just in toys—it’s used in making raincoats, rain boots, beach balls and more. And unfortunately, nobody takes these things into consideration when purchasing a product. As consumers, we’ve become way too complacent with buying cheap trends and completely disregard health risks. Our children deserve better.
But youdon’t have to partake in that. Because you’re way smarter. When you shop for a doll for your daughter, you’ll choose a plastic alternative that’s safe and non-toxic. You’ll choose an eco-friendly doll. And we’ve got a great suggestion for you!
Say Hello to Eco Baby Dolls
Eco Baby Dolls are hand-crafted, eco-friendly dolls made from 100% all natural rubber, which the company sustainably harvests from the Hevea Brasiliensis Tree. Natural rubber is plant based, making it non-toxic and very soft. Hence, these dolls are very snuggly.
Natural rubber is plant based, making it completely biodegradable. So unlike plastic dolls, which will sit around in landfills indefinitely, Eco Baby Dolls, which are made from natural rubber, are gentle on the environment and will biodegrade over time.
Unlike traditional dolls, which are made from toxic PVC plastic, natural rubber is toxin free, and 100% safe to touch. Eco Baby Dolls are also decorated with cotton clothing. So no need to worry about any leaching chemicals.

Littering, de-forestation, plastic pollution…all of those things and more occur on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, not many people are aware of the seriousness of these things. So when it comes to raising awareness, sometimes the best way to grab someone’s attention, especially regarding environmental issues, is through humor.
These genius environmental commercials do just that —they grab your attention with humor, and make you remember how very real these environmental issues truly are.
Though a bit quirky, these commercials are educational and memorable. In a strange, but good way, they make you remember to be a more conscious person when it comes to the environment, and that’s a good thing.
So take a few minutes out of your day and watch a few—laughter is good for the soul.
Noice: Zero Waste Toothpaste
Source: YouTube: Noice
We love this hilarious commercial because it stars the co-founder of Noice (a zero waste toothpaste company) and how transparent they are with their ingredients—they hide nothing—just like Clement. If you’d like to try it out, it’s available on Amazon with a subscription option!
This hilarious environmental commercial is brutally honest. A government spokesperson showcases all the horrible environmental issues going on throughout the world but later on encourages people to do something about it. The highlight of this video is toward the end, where we’re reminded of people trying to raid Area 51 instead of focusing on more important things. It’s definitely worth a watch.
This environmental commercial is all about switching to eco-friendly laundry strips which are available on their Tru Earth Store and are much kinder to your health and the environment. The main character is incredibly cheesy and full of himself which makes this commercial hilarious. The funniest line in this commercial is “every time you click, a baby turtle gets to go to college” (referring to a 30 day free trial).
This environmental commercial stars actress Melissa McCarthy and was played during Super Bowl 51. In this commercial, Melissa keeps getting tasked to save trees, sea creatures and more—unfortunately, she getting hurt in the process which makes this commercial oh so humorous.
Josh Thrower – Waste Management- A Mighty Good Can
This funny environmental commercial is about a woman on a date with a plastic bottle, and breaking the relationship off. “It’s not you, it’s me” she says to the bottle as she pulls out a stainless steel reusable water bottle.
You Can Do Something To Save The Earth, Just Follow The Frog
This funny environmental commercial is about the importance of buying products that contain the Rainforest Alliance certification. The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests to make responsible business the new normal.
This environmental commercial is so awkward that it makes you break down and laugh toward the end. It’s about a guy who is trying to get people to sign a petition to help the environment, but everyone ignores him. Finally, when someone does stop to talk to him, he has no idea what to talk about.
If you’re familiar with the product “Final Straw”, then you’ll love their funny commercial about avoiding plastic straws and opting for reusable ones. The Star of the commercial is a mermaid who kind of just hovers above the ground (mermaid tail and all).
The premise of this environmental commercial is to show the importance of putting trash and recycling products where they belong—in bins and not the ground—“life makes sense when everything is in its place”. You then get a good laugh at different occupations switching places and how awkward it would be in real life if that were to happen.

Candle sales in the United States average around 2.5 billion dollars per year. And while candles are an excellent addition to any home decor, most people are blind to the hidden dangers of fancy-smelling mainstream candles.
Traditional candles are made from a petroleum byproduct called paraffin. And when burned, parrafin releases carcinogens into the air, which are damaging to our health.
Luckily, there’s a healthier alternative that candle lovers can feel good about burning—beeswax candles.
Beeswax is eco-friendly because it is natural and organic. It does not require any additives or preservatives—which means they’ll never go rancid like paraffin and plant-based candles (yes, soy candles can go bad).
Reasons To Switch To Beeswax Candles
BEESWAX CANDLES ARE NATURAL AIR PURIFIERS
Research confirms that beeswax candles neutralize pollutants in the home such as mold, mildew and dust—making beeswax candles natural air purifiers. That’s because when burned, beeswax produces negative ions which attach to positive ions like dust. Hence, if have allergy sufferers in your household, you might want to consider burning a beeswax candle.
BEESWAX CANDLES PROVIDESTRESS RELIEF
A second benefit of burning beeswax candles is stress relief. Beeswax and its subtle honey aroma is known to create an atmosphere of tranquillity—promoting relaxation and soothing restlessness. So if you’re looking to achieve better sleep, you should give beeswax a try.
BEESWAX CANDLES BURN LONGER
Due to its density, beeswax burns at a much slower rate than traditional candles. Even the smallest of beeswax candles (birthday candles) can burn as long as 30 minutes. While many larger candles can burn as long as 70-80 hours.
BEESWAX CANDLES DON’T DRIP
Have you ever lit a pillar candle or birthday candle only to see it start dripping? Thats very common with traditional candles. And those that don’t drip, are full of additives to mimic beeswax. Birthday candles made of beeswax, will not drip. So go ahead and enjoy that cake minus the waxy coating.
BEESWAX CANDLES HAVE A NATURAL SCENT
Beeswax candles have a natural honey aroma, so there’s no need to include any artificial fragrance. However, if a honey scent is not your cup of tea, you can find beeswax candles that are infused with various essentials oils.
BEESWAX CANDLES BURN BRIGHTER
Beeswax has a very high melting point, so it burns incredibly bright. In fact, beeswax candles emit a flame that’s on the same spectrum as sunlight.
If you’re considering making a switch to natural beeswax candles, then take a look below at some of our favorite beeswax candle brands!

Want to protect your phone and the planet from plastic pollution? Read on!
There are currently 272.6 million smartphone users in the United States, and around 5 billion world-wide. This means that billions of plastic cell phone cases are lounging around in landfills.
Why? Because people are constantly upgrading their smart phones. And when you get a new model, it’s usually a different size than your previous smart phone—which means that you must get a new protective phone case to accommodate your new mobile device.
To combat plastic pollution and lower their carbon footprint, conscious consumers are exploring sustainable alternatives when it comes to protecting their mobile devices—and there are actually quite a few [green] brands that make plastic-free cell phone cases with compostable material and nontoxic adhesives.
Compostable cell phone cases aren’t just great for the environment—they’re also a lot healthier than their plastic competitors which are often times manufactured in countries like China, and are made with harmful toxins.
According to the New Straits Times “A consumer watchdog in China conducted an investigation recently and found that phone cases from several popular manufacturers contain harmful substances.”
One of the most harmful substances found in mainstream plastic phone cases is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which have been linked to infertility problems, as well as lung, bladder, skin and stomach cancers—even more reason to avoid plastic cases.
Below are some of our favorite compostable smart phone case brands that are made from nontoxic and sustainable resources like bamboo, cork, recycled wood, wheat straw and even flax.
And because the packaging is just as important as the product itself, all of these brands use compostable packaging made from recyclable paper.
These environmentally friendly phone case brands also plant trees and contribute to non-profit organizations with every phone case sale.
Making a switch to a biodegradable cell phone case is a great choice for both your health and the environment.h
Wilma Compostable Phone Cases
Wilma is an eco-friendly phone case brand that makes their phone cases entirely out of corn starch and cellulose—making them completely biodegradable, according to European standard.
Wilma’s biodegradable phone cases come in both vibrant designs with environmental messages as well as plain, solid colors.
Wilma donates $1 per case sold to non-profit organizations.
The eco-friendly Pela phone cases are made from a combination of flax shive and plant-based biopolymers. These compostable phone cases contain organic ingredients that meet rigorous ASTM D6400 standards for compostability in municipal and industrial composting facilities.
Pela phone cases are available in a wide range of designs—from plain, solid colors to designs inspired by the environment.
Pela also donates 1% of their revenues to non-profit organizations.
Nalia natural cork cases are hand made and biodegradable. Natural cork is ultra soft and feels like leather, hence it has become known as the “vegan” leather of the fashion world—being used to make shoes, purses and…phone cases.
We love that the Nalia phone cases are hand because each one contains its own unique pattern. There are even some with pretty henna designs to choose from.
Shampoo bars are becoming increasingly popular, which is great! Women everywhere are ditching traditional shampoos and opting for zero-waste alternatives. They’re eco-friendly, they’re cute, they smell like flowers and gumdrops and unicorns—and some even have glitter and tiny chunks of flower petals. They’re the perfect zero-waste hair care product for women!
BUT WHAT ABOUT MEN?
Men don’t want to smell like vanilla cupcakes or unicorn farts! They can’t have sparkles and flower petals lingering on their sideburns. Their bro friends will never let them hear the end of it. But, they do want in on the zero-waste hair care movement—as long as the products have a masculine scent.
Men deserve to have environmentally-friendly eco-manes just like women. And they can—because men’s grooming products now include shampoo bars.
That’s why we’ve done some research, visited a bunch of manufacturer websites, and chose some of the most ethical hair care brands that make shampoo bars made specifically for men in mind with scents like pine and tar and beer, ….you get where we’re going with this.
We’re talking natural, organic and vegan ingredients, zero animal testing, and plastic free packaging. Plus, some of these companies do pretty rad philanthropic work, which is pretty darn awesome, in our book.
Why Should You Switch To Shampoo Bars?
Traditional shampoos are packaged in plastic bottles, and if you take into account one bottle per person, that’s millions of shampoo bottles laying around in your local landfill…indefinitely. Why? Because as you all know, plastic doesn’t biodegrade.
Shampoo bars, however, are made with plastic-free packaging. In fact, most aren’t even shipped to your house in plastic. What they do get shipped in, is recyclable and biodegradable packaging that you can feel warm and gooey about; because you’re helping the planet.
They are also void of harsh chemicals and ingredients that strip your hair of its natural oils. In fact, when switching to an all natural shampoo bar, you may notice that your hair is not as dry as it normally would be after using traditional shampoo. For many people, this may take getting used to.
Shampoo bars are also suitable for beards and body. That’s right! Whereas traditional shampoo is limited to just the hair on your scalp, shampoo bars can be used for much, much more! In fact, men LOVE the new appearance and texture of their facial hair—stating that “frizz” is down by a considerable percent.
Are shampoo bars Convenient foR travel?
Because shampoo bars are solid, compact, and friendly on the environment, they are excellent for travel and outdoor recreation such as camping. You can easily keep them in a soap bar travel container and not worry about spills or airport security telling you that the bottle you’re bringing on board with you is way to big. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a shampoo bottle going rogue and spilling all your carry-on, and you certainly don’t have to spend extra money buying a whole new shampoo bottle on your trip.
How Do Shampoo Bars Work?
Shampoo bars work just like regular soap bars. You create a lather, and smear it into your wet hair (and beard). Then you just wash as you would with conventional shampoo.
Are you Ready to try one Out?
Then let’s go check them out! Try it, and if you like it, make the switch for good! If not, then go back to what you used before. No harm done in trying something new.
Most bars will save you money because they last as long as 2-3 bottles of shampoo—provided you store them correctly. With that said, keep them on a dish soap (one with holes) so they can dry and prevent them from turning to goo. For recommendations on soap trays that are best suited for shampoo bars, check out our article called “How To Store Shampoo Bars And Soap”.
All the shampoo bars chosen below are Climate Pledge Friendly, which is a sustainability certification. They’re also cruelty free and never tested on animals, just probably on bad employees.
Bossman is a rugged looking, organic 4 in 1 bar. But, despite its manly appearance, it’s actually packed full of soothing nutrients that pamper your hair, face, beard and body! It’s used as shampoo, conditioner, body wash and beard lather. If you don’t have time to watch their video [above], they go over all types of skin issues that this shampoo bar has helped people with—from acne to dandruff and psoriasis. They go on to discuss how a mom has even used it on her baby because of how gentle the ingredients are compared to traditional shampoo and baby body wash. And that is amazing.
The Apple Valley Natural Soap company is one of our favorite family-owned shampoo bar brands. Food is a basic human need, yet we take it for granted—creating food waste that contributes to 6% of greenhouse gas emissions.
Restaurants, grocery stores and our own households generate a good amount of food waste on a daily basis. And if you have a tiny squad of picky eaters, you know that’s not far from the truth!
So what can society as a whole do to lower our carbon footprint when it comes to food waste? The answer to that is indoor composting.
What Is Composting?
Composting is the method of taking food scraps and other organic items, placing them into a bin, and allowing everything to decompose and biodegrade into nutrient-rich material.
Composting is really quite beautiful. You’re essentially guiding dead matter into the afterlife, where it will emerge as something purposeful—it will contribute to the growth of new living matter. It’s literally the circle of life.
Compost acts as a natural fertilizer and soil conditioner that’s used throughout the world for organic farming, gardening and landscaping. It also acts as a natural pesticide, reducing the need for harmful chemicals in agriculture.
There are three main ways to compost:
Continuous composting, batch composting, and indoor composting.
Continuous composting occurs outdoors within large containers. This is a method primarily used by gardeners. Food scraps and landscape items such as weeds, grass clippings and twigs are continuously placed inside to biodegrade.
Just as the name infers, batch composting occurs in batches in order to biodegrade at a faster rate. Food waste and other material are added into a pile at one time, then mixed and tumbled a couple of times a day until the compost is “cooked” and ready to be used. Then it’s switched out with new waste and the process is repeated.
Indoor composting consists of composting on a smaller scale—mostly kitchen food scraps which are tossed into a gallon sized countertop bin that contains an odor absorbing charcoal filter (though not all bins require one). This smaller production of compost is typically used on household plants and small gardens, and it’s a great way fo strive for a zero-waste kitchen.
Why You Should Compost
Composting helps fight climate change! As mentioned previously, food that ends up decomposing in landfills contributes to six percent of global green house gas emissions.
When you compost, your small contribution helps reduce these greenhouse gas emissions, and you’re supplying your lawn, garden and household plants with organic and rich nutrients.
What Can You Compost?
You can compost most fruit/vegetable scraps, crushed eggshells, coffee grounds, tea bags and old bread. If you’re using an outdoor bin, you can throw in larger twigs, weeds, and grass clippings, etc.
You should never compost meat, fish, dairy products or oil of any kind, as these items will only attract maggots and rodents.
If indoor composting sounds appealing, then you should definitely give it a try! You’ll feel great about recycling organic matter and turning it into something purposeful.
Below are a few excellent kitchen countertop compost bins to get you inspired. They all come with tight seals and charcoal filters to trap odor, so no need to worry about attracting flies.
Concern about odor is a main reason that prevents people from pursuing this practice, but there’s really no need to worry about it.
These bins are easy to clean, and some are even dishwasher safe. It’s also up to you if you’d like to use a biodegradable liner. It’s really not required, but it’s easier to maintain a clean bin that way. Some of these bins come with liners included, and some must be purchased separately.
Another great feature about countertop compost bins is the size. They’re all primarily one gallon-sized containers, so they’ll fit just about anywhere without taking up much space.
They also all come in different styles—from retro to modern and contemporary. And, stainless steel to ceramic and more. So whatever look you’re into, there’s a compost bin out there that’ll match your kitchen decor.
