How To Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Tips To Prevent And Minimize The Appearance Of Pregnancy Stretch Marks

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

“Are Pregnancy Stretch Marks Preventable?”

Whether you’re planning on getting pregnant, or you’re in your first trimester, one of your biggest worries is getting those dreaded pregnancy stretch marks—and you research like crazy to see if there are ways to prevent or even just minimize them.

The answer to your question is that in some cases of women they can be completely prevented, and in others they cannot be 100% prevented—BUT, they can definitely be minimized to the point where they will fade fairly quickly after you have your baby.

The key to preventing pregnancy stretch marks (which can emerge anywhere between 13-22 weeks) is to stick to a skincare routine that you follow religiously!

When I was pregnant with my first baby, I was really nervous about getting stretch marks on my belly, especially since I was prone to getting them around my hips and thigh area during my teen years. And if I knew back then what I know now, I could have prevented those as well.

So, during my first trimester, I researched ways to prevent pregnancy stretch marks, by learning about the skin itself. And what I learned was really eye opening. For example, did you know that our skin naturally exfoliates itself every 28 days? Or that stress triggers cortisol resulting in a breakdown of collagen? Interesting stuff.

With that said, taking care of your skin is a lot of work. It’s more than just slathering on some cocoa butter and staying hydrated. Mental health plays a big role as well.

After doing my research, I created a skin care routine for myself during both pregnancies that I swear by.

It helped prevent stretch marks both times, and those that appeared in places other than my belly (like hips and breasts faded in no time).

Below I’m going to share with you my habits and pregnancy-safe skin care routine that I used throughout both pregnancies to prevent stretch marks.

Skincare Routine To Prevent & Minimize Pregnancy Stretch Marks

Exfoliate With A Sugar Scrub

Exfoliating the skin of your pregnant belly is a very important step in your stretch mark prevention routine.

Pregnant bellies stretch, and because of that, your skin gets irritated, itchy and flakey! So prior to whatever moisturizer you’re going to put on your skin, give it a gentle scrub in the shower with something as simple as a home-made brown sugar, coffee scrub, or even a store-bought apricot scrub like St. Ives. I used both, and loved how smooth my skin would feel after each shower.

Gentle exfoliation helps shed dead skin cells, and helps your skin absorb moisturizing skin care products (which we will discuss next).

Choose Serums Over Stretch Mark Prevention Creams

The harsh truth about pregnancy prevention creams is that many are ineffective, and a complete waste of money. Here’s why:

Butters and thick moisturizers don’t penetrate the skin, so you’re going to have a product that’s just sitting on top of your skin like icing on a cake—meanwhile your skin cells below the surface continue to stretch. Now, don’t discredit body butters altogether, because they are still great to use for the top layer to prevent the itch and dry flakes.

Expensive pregnancy prevention creams don’t work that well either because although they do penetrate the skin, they only go around and in between your skin cells, which also doesn’t help to stretch and expand the cells. Plus, many stretch mark creams contain unhealthy ingredients that may not be safe.

Ok, So What The Heck Do I Use?

What you need is SERUMS. Go online and order yourself a good organic vitamin E and vitamin C serum and use them together DAILY! These oils are pregnancy safe, and you don’t need a fancy brand—just as long as it’s organic.

Serums penetrate the skin, and actually go into your skin cells, which facilitate stretching and help skin expansion which prevents stretch marks.

Hence, after you exfoliate, massage in your serums, let them dry, and lock them in using a good cocoa butter. I used Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Tummy Butter—the one that comes in a small tub. It smells great, and it really helped control the flaking and itchiness.

Wear A Pregnancy Wrap To Lock In The Moisture

Consider wearing a stretchy and breathable support wrap to lock in moisture after applying your serums and butters—like the Belly Boost Pregnancy Support Wrap by Belly Bandit.

Wearing a belly wrap helped my serums and tummy butter last longer throughout the day, and kept my skin hydrated at night as well.

Plus, wraps help keep the oily serums and skincare products from soaking into and ruining your maternity clothing. So that’s something to definitely consider.

Implement Collagen Supplements Into Your Diet

While you should always check with your doctor when starting a new supplement, collagen supplements are considered safe during pregnancy, and I’ve personally taken collagen supplements with both of my pregnancies.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body, and it’s responsible for the elasticity in your skin. However, when you’re pregnant and food aversions start to become a reality, it’s hard to get a good amount of collagen into your body through food alone—that’s why collagen supplements are so beneficial.

Collagen supplements are available in both powder and pill form, and either one is fine to take—it’s all about preference. I don’t mind swallowing big pills, so I took the YouTheory Collagen pills with added vitamin C. I still take them to this day as part of my anti-aging routine.

Stay Hydrated, Exercise, And Practice That Self Care

Lastly, (and these are the no-brainers) remember to drink your water, engage in some light-moderate exercise and practice some self care.

One of my favorite ways to unwind and relax during my entire pregnancy was to lay down and listen to some ASMR, which stands for autonomous sensory meridian response.

There are many YouTube videos with creative ASMR sounds that make you feel an incredibly relaxing and sedative sensation which begins on the scalp and moves down the body. This sensation naturally produces oxytocin which prevents stress and the breakdown of collagen that we discussed earlier in this article.

I wish you the best of luck on your pregnancy journey, and I hope that these stretch mark prevention tips will work great for you! Come back and let us know in the comments!

How To Remove Pesticides From Fruits And Vegetables

3 Simple Hacks To Naturally Remove Dirt, Bacteria And Chemicals From Your Produce

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

When it comes to agriculture, farmers turn to pesticides in order to protect their crops against fungi, insects, pests, weeds and various diseases that would otherwise destroy up to 40% of annual crops.

Unfortunately, saving crops comes with a horrible price. Exposure to pesticides can cause cancer, tumors, wreak havoc on our nervous system, weaken our immunity, and disrupt our reproductive hormones.

Even organic produce falls victim to spray drifts as well as direct pesticide sprays that have been approved for use on organic fruits and vegetables— copper sulfate being one of them (and unfortunately, it’s pretty toxic).

Lastly, organic or not, no produce is free from wax coating, germs and bacterial contamination, so it is crucial to properly give all of your fruits and vegetables a good rinse—even those whose packaging states that the contents are pre-washed.

With that said, below are three popular and effective methods to remove impurities as well as pesticides from your produce that take very little effort.

All three involve soaking your produce in water with three powerhouse pantry ingredients that are safe to use and are very inexpensive.

For larger, thick-skinned fruits and vegetables, you can also use a bamboo scrub brush, which I like to use on potatoes—especially if I am baking them.

Also, it’s important to know that you shouldn’t wash berries until you are ready to eat them, as soaking them in these solutions can cause them to go bad super fast if put back in the fridge.

All other fruits and vegetables can and should be washed as soon as you bring them home. That’s because the longer pesticides sit on your produce, the more they penetrate the skin.

The Three Methods To Naturally Remove Dirt, Bacteria And Pesticides From Your Produce

The Baking Soda Method

Soaking produce in a sink or bowl full of water and baking soda is a fantastic way to clean your produce! Baking soda is an alkaline that strips away pesticides by breaking down their chemical structure into neutral molecules that are no longer harmful.

Simply fill up your sink, bowl or any other container, and add one teaspoon of baking soda per every 2 cups of water. Allow your fruits and vegetables to float around for about 15 minutes and then rinse them off with regular water.

The Vinegar Method

Adding white vinegar to water is another common method that effectively removes bacteria and pesticides from fruits and vegetables. That’s because vinegar contains acetic acid, which dissolves pesticides and kills about 98 percent of bacteria.

Simply fill up your sink, bowl or any other container, and add one part vinegar per 4 parts of water. I like to add 1/4 cup of vinegar per every 2 cups of water, so that the solution isn’t too acidic. Allow your fruits and vegetables to float around for about 15-20 minutes and then rinse them off with regular water.

Whenever I clean store-bought apples in the vinegar/water solution, I’m always in awe of how even the wax starts to strip off. It’s simply fantastic how powerful and effective vinegar is!

The Salt Water Method

The third method that many people use to cleanse their produce involves soaking fruits and vegetables in [sea] salt water. And while this is effective, it does tend to alter the flavor of berries, so it’s best to use on vegetables, which typically get salted anyway when cooking.

Simply fill up your sink, bowl or any other container, and add one teaspoon of sea salt per every 2 cups of water. Allow your fruits and vegetables to float around for about 15 minutes and then rinse them off with regular water.

Potty Chair Or Potty Seat: Which Is Best For Potty Training?

The Pros And Cons Of Potty Chairs And Potty Seats

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

When your toddler finally begins to show signs that they are ready to begin potty training, you can ensure their success by choosing the right potty for them to practice on.

Potty training always begins with an introduction to a potty chair or adult toilet with a potty seat attached, and each has its own set of pros and cons.

It’s important to know that there is no right or wrong choice when purchasing a potty training device, and it all comes down to what you and your child are most comfortable using.

In my household, my son potty trained using a potty seat, while my daughter used a potty chair. My son was always a tall child, and sitting on the adult toilet with a portable potty seat made him feel more comfortable. My daughter, on the other hand, is petite, so the height of mom’s toilet was a bit intimidating for her.

So, to help you decide on what might work best for your household, I’ve listed all the advantages and disadvantages to using a potty chair and a potty seat.

POTTY CHAIR

Pros Of Using Potty Chairs

  • Portable and easily accessible—can be placed in any room of the house.
  • Less intimidating and easier to use than a full-size toilet.
  • Less scary because it does not flush and make a loud noise.
  • They are safer than toilet rings because they are lower to ground—reducing any risk of injury.

Cons Of Using Potty Chairs

  • Potty chairs have to be cleaned manually—poop takes extra effort to clean out because it sticks to the plastic.
  • They are bulky which means that they can take up floor space in a small bathroom, and can be inconvenient to travel with.
  • Even if your child masters the potty chair, they will eventually have to transition to the toilet—the beginning of another challenge.

POTTY SEAT

Pros Of Using Potty Seats

  • Potty Seats are much easier to clean up because waste goes straight into the toilet.
  • They are travel friendly because they’re flat and can be stowed into a tote bag.
  • They facilitate an easier transition to the toilet because your child is already used to sitting on it.

Cons Of Using Potty Seats

  • Toilet rings must stay in bathroom, and aren’t as convenient as potty chairs which can be used in other parts of the house.
  • Using a potty seat requires the need for a sturdy step stool to be placed next to the toilet so that your child can have easy access.
  • The height of mom and dad’s toilet can be intimidating to your child and this can deter them from using it.
  • The height of an adult toilet can also be unsafe. If the potty ring isn’t sturdy, or if a child squirms too much, they can fall off and hurt themselves.

Eco-Friendly Easter Crafts For Kids

Fun And Easy Easter Crafts To Make With Your Kids

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Every year, as Easter slowly approaches, I look for fun and easy Easter themed crafts that I can do with my children.

Crafting is a great way to celebrate and learn the meaning of certain holidays, and it’s also a fantastic way to work on fine motor skills!

How Can I Make Easter Crafts Eco-Friendly?

When it comes to arts and crafts, I always encourage myself, as well as my children, to use environmentally friendly supplies that can either be up-cycled, recycled, or composted. Some examples are:

  • Kraft + Construction Paper
  • Non-Toxic Glue
  • Glass Jars
  • Felt Paper
  • Egg Cartons
  • Toilet Paper + Paper Towel Tubes

Not all art and crafting supplies are 100% eco-friendly, and that’s ok. Some projects require the use of certain items like googly eyes; and I have no problem using them even though they are made from plastic because I can always reuse them on future projects. And if they make my child laugh and giggle, then I am all for it.

Below are some of my favorite low-waste Easter crafts for kids that we have been enjoying, and we hope you will too. They are super fun and easy to create, and look great when completed!

Ethical Swimwear Brands For Men

Save The Ocean And Look Stylish In These Eco-Friendly Swim Trunks For Men

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

With so much plastic being dumped into the ocean each day, it’s no wonder that more consumers are embracing circular fashion, which greatly reduces our dependency on raw materials.

And with spring break just around the corner, many eco-conscious beach goers are opting for sustainable beach trunks that are environmentally friendly, functional and stylish.

Why Purchase Sustainable Swimwear?

When you choose sustainable swimwear over fast fashion brands, you’re helping textiles stay out of the landfill. That’s because sustainable swim trunks are made from recycled and renewable fabric that would otherwise have ended up as waste.

Many sustainable swim trunks are also hypoallergenic because in addition to recycled fabric, ethical brands also use natural fibers like organic cotton, hemp and bamboo to create their swimwear.

Ethically made swim trunks will also last longer because they’re higher quality. You see, fast fashion brands are all about seasonal trends, so they use the cheapest fabric they can get their hands on. This ensures that your swimwear won’t last, and it’ll need to be tossed out and replaced. Sustainable swim trunks, on the other hand, are made to last because the goal is to keep textile out of the landfill, so a lot more thought is placed into making them.

Sustainable swimwear is also ethically manufactured in humane conditions and with fair wages. Unfortunately, many swimsuit brands are made overseas where child labor is unfortunately taken advantage of. And one way to combat this practice is to not purchase big-name swimwear brands, and opting for ethical brands instead.

Below are a few ethical fashion brands that make functional, stylish and more importantly, eco-friendly swimwear for men that’s worth buying.

So whether you just want to lounge by the pool, do some paddling on the lake or maybe even a little surfing in the ocean, you’ll feel good about wearing these.

Sustainable Swimwear For Eco-Conscious Men

Brand | Quiksilver | Surfsilk Stretch Collection

Not many people know that Quiksilver actually has a line of sustainable swim shorts made from recycled polyester—and they are really stylish. Their eco-friendly Surfsilk Stretch line is available in many designs, and are actually quite affordable for being ethical apparel.

Brand | Piping Hot

These sustainable swim trunks are made from recycled material and have have a rating of UPF 50+, allowing less than 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the surface of the garment for excellent sun protection. They also have a zippered side mesh pocket that drains water to keep your belongings close by and safe.

Brand | PrAna

PrAna creates stylish eco-friendly swim trunks from recycled polyester and spandex. These swim trunks come in two other island-themed designs that look great on the beach.

Brand | Kove Mondo

This sustainable swimsuit brand recycles 8 water bottles in every swimsuit so you not only look good, you can feel good to knowing you are making a difference. These swim trunks have an upbeat design and come equipped with a super soft mesh lining for ultra comfort.

Brand | Quiksilver | Hempstretch Endless Trip Collection

Another great eco-friendly swimwear collection by Quiksilver is the Hempstretch Endless Trip Swim trunks. Made from a blend of recycled polyester and hemp, these swim trunk are modern, stylish and double as board shorts.

Winter is almost over, which means it’s time for some SPRING CLEANING!

Every season, we are presented with an opportunity to start fresh. And when it comes to our home, springtime is usually the season where most people do an overhaul to give their home a fresh new feel.

But, as beneficial as spring cleaning is, the process can actually be quite harmful to our health and our environment because we’re using cleaning products that are packed full of toxic ingredients.

When we use conventional household cleaning sprays, we are breathing in a good amount of toxins. The same goes for dishes, doing laundry and mopping the floor—the cleaning agents used within these traditional cleaning products will end up in our waterways and affect our health long-term.

How To Clean Without Harming The Environment

That’s where companies like Tru Earth come to the rescue. Known for their plant-based detergent strips, Tru Earth helps undo the damage that most traditional cleaning brands leave behind.

Tru Earth has an amazing eco-friendly collection of cleaning products, reusable kitchen necessities, and more. So, this spring, here are some top plant-based cleaning products to help get the job done.

Tru Earth Multi-Purpose Cleaner Strips

Tru Earth’s Multi-Surface Cleaner strips contain all the cleaning power of a big brand multi-surface cleaner, minus the plastic and harsh chemicals. Just toss a strip in a spray bottle, add hot water, shake and spray!

These eco-friendly strips are great for mopping as well! Just throw a strip into a bucket and add water. Dirty toilet? Throw half a strip into the bowl, let it dissolve and then scrub away!

This awesome cleaning product helps keep 2.5 billion plastic cleaning bottles out of landfills per year!

Tru Earth Compostable Sponges

Tru Earth Compostable Pop-Up Sponges are 100% plant-based and environmentally friendly. They are made from cellulose and have a tough and textured “feel” making them ideal cleaning tools for any part of the house where a spill has to be tackled. The best part is that as tough as they are, they won’t leave scratch marks, and they last for weeks!

Tru Earth Beeswax Wraps

When you’re ready to tackle the fridge, consider using lightweight and flexible Beeswax Wraps. They are a genius eco-friendly method for storing vegetables, fruits, bread, cheese, and more!

Beeswax wraps help combat food waste and reduce the need for single-use plastic storage containers in your kitchen. They even come in handy if you’re missing a lid to a container. Instead of tossing out perfectly good containers, just cover them with a beeswax wrap.

Beeswax wraps work by forming a tight seal or hold around an item, keeping your food fresh for longer periods of time. They work like plastic cling wrap, but without causing damage to the environment when their use is up.

So, if you’re ready to spring clean the eco-friendly way, head on over to Tru Earth today, and check out all the eco-friendly products to help you make your home and the the earth shine a little brighter this spring!

Epic Parenting Fails Confessed By Redditors

Parents Of Reddit Confess Their Most Memorable Parenting Fails, And We Can Totally Relate

Whether you’re a new parent, or have been around the block a few times, you know that being a parent is really hard work.

I mean, if you don’t have crippling anxiety from constant worrying on a daily basis, are you even a parent?

That’s why I’ve put together a compilation of hilarious parenting fail confessions from Reddit which prove that we’re all just trying survive this whole parenting thing.

These parenting blunders are great to read if you’re having a bad day, or feel like the worst parent in the world. They also make you realize that we’re all human, and there is no such thing as a perfect parent.

Epic Parenting Fail Confessions By Parents Of Reddit

“I had my son on my shoulders this weekend just walking around. Ran his head right in the garage door”

“Either me or my husband changed the sheets of the baby’s bassinet pad and put it back in the bassinet upside down. For almost a week, our 2 month old was sleeping on a freaking hard board.”

“When my firstborn was about 3 weeks old I decided to put him in the stroller and go for a walk to the mall. I’d been wearing flip flops for weeks, so I decided to dust off a pair of platform sandals to celebrate the fact that I actually had balance again. Or so I thought. On our way home, I tripped over something and completely lost my balance. I went over and so did my stroller. And my 3 week old newborn rolled out onto the sidewalk.”

“I managed to pour an entire 5 oz bottle of formula on my son’s face at 3 in the morning.”

“Once I pinched my daughter’s finger in the carseat buckle so badly. I was even pushing on it because I thought it was stuck. I looked up and she was doing that inhale-before-cry thing. I felt like shit all afternoon.”

“We were camping. My 4 year old was acting up so he got sent for time out on a stump near the tent. He was upset so he was crying and sniffling. He knew he had to wait four minutes, but he kept starting to talk and I’d tell him to be quiet and start the time over. Finally (about 3 minutes) I got fed up and went to talk to him. Turns out there were ants on the stump. Only one, a really really large one, crawled up him and was biting a line across his neck and he couldn’t swat it off. I took it off and smashed it in my fingers. Then started crying myself and held my little boy. I still feel like shit when I think about it and it was a year ago.”

“I forgot to feed my kids dinner once, when they were really small. Got them all ready for bed, tucked them in, and then my son says, “When’s dinner?”

“I was getting off a plane a few weeks ago with my four month old in a baby carrier and I needed to get my diaper bag from the back of the overhead bin. Stepped on the seat, pushed up, and absolutely smoked my child’s head on the overhead bin”

“I was exhausted and had been trying to get her to sleep for the longest. She finally fell asleep in my arms and as I groggily walked into her room – BAM – I hit the doorframe with her little head. ”

“When our daughter was 6ish weeks old I put her car seat on the counter to get her out of it because I didn’t want to bend over, when I took her out I smoked her lil skull on the cabinet above her”

“My hubby was leaving for work and had his satchel over his arm, went to hug our baby goodbye and right after pulling away, the bag smacked our dude in the face.

“I accidentally punched him in the face when I was trying to pull up the chest buckle to armpit level in his car seat.”

The Best Maternity Photoshoot Dresses And Gowns

Show Off Your Bump In These Must-Have Maternity Photoshoot Gowns!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Maternity photos are all about celebrating the miracle of life that’s growing inside of you, the extraordinary changes that your body goes through, and becoming a mother—whether it’s for the first time, or the 8th.

With that said, each pregnancy is special, and many pregnant women want to commemorate that beautiful moment in time with a maternity photoshoot that they can cherish for a lifetime.

Which Week Is Best For A Maternity Photoshoot?

The best time for a pregnancy photoshoot is during the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy (30-36 weeks), and there are a couple of good reasons for this specific timeframe.

It is during these specific weeks that your bump transforms into that perfectly round shape that sits nice and high. It’s also that time where you’re slowly approaching your due date, and literally anything can happen.

So as long as you’re satisfied with the size of your pregnant belly, don’t be afraid to schedule a maternity photoshoot as early as week 30.

What If I am Carrying Twins or Multiples?

If you are carrying twins or multiple babies, the best time to participate in a maternity photoshoot is around the beginning of your second trimester. That’s because carrying multiple babies makes your belly grow at a faster pace, and you’re most likely going to deliver early as well.

What Is The Best Color To Wear For Maternity Pictures?

One of the most common questions that many photographers get asked is what color dress works best in a maternity photo shoot? And believe it or not, there are actually certain colors that do better than others.

The color red, for example, comes out looking beautiful because it contrasts well against many backgrounds—especially if your photography session is out in nature.

Light blues and just about any shade of pink looks lovely as well—plus, they represent the gender of the baby! So many parents choose to go with these two colors.

A vibrant gold or yellow dress also looks fabulous against an earthy or dark background—think Kate Hudson in ”How To Loose A Guy In 10 Days”—I LOVED that dress!

Now, when it comes to white and black, photographers say that those shades do not do your bump justice. They are just two colors that ”hide” the belly instead of bringing it out. They do, however, look great in black and white photos.

Below is a round-up of timeless maternity gowns that are perfect for a beautiful photoshoot. Some can even be worn post-pregnancy! These dresses will have you looking confident and absolutely gorgeous, and you’ll have wonderful keepsakes that you can cherish for a lifetime.
