Uproot Clean Review: Does It Really Work?

The Reusable Lint Cleaner And Pet Hair Removal Tool You Need In Your Life

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission. Also, all thoughts and opinions about this product are my own.

I’ll get straight to the point: disposable lint rollers are bad for the environment. Everything about them is wasteful—from the sticky roll of paper, to the flimsy plastic handle.

Don’t get me wrong, traditional lint rollers are a cool invention, but there are much better alternatives that perform the task just as well, and don’t pollute the planet during the process.

With that said, I was ecstatic when Uproot Clean contacted me for an opportunity to review their reusable lint and pet hair remover tool. I had seen their ads all over instagram and was genuinely intrigued about this little tool that made such satisfying scraping sounds while rounding up massive amounts of pet hair from people’s carpets and sofa cushions.

And when I got mine in the mail and started using it on my own sofa cushions, carpet and sweaters, I knew it was the real deal, and I wasn’t going to need disposable versions ever again.

What Is The Uproot Clean Tool, And Does It Really Work?

The Uproot Clean tool is a multi-purpose reusable lint and pet hair remover that tackles everything ranging from carpets, rugs, clothes, furniture, bedding, backpacks, car seats, cat condos and more.

There are no adhesives to mess with, nothing to throw out, and all you have to do is scrape. Yes, scrape—but, don’t worry, because the creators of Uproot Clean have designed this tool in such a way that it doesn’t snag.

You should also know that the tool does not work on certain carpets and fabric like berber—this is due to the woven loop system that it has going on.

I Use It On My Sofa Cushions

We’ve had our sofa set for 4 years now, and over time those poor cushions developed some serious pilling. So I decided to use the Uproot Clean to get rid of every single little annoying ball of lint, and my sofa cushions went back to looking smooth and almost like they did years ago. I say almost because I have kids, and if you’re a parent, you know what I’m talking about.

Below is a video of me using the Uproot Clean on my couch cushion. It scraped up random lint that I didn’t even know was on there—pet hair, my hair, dryer lint, etc. Pretty much stuff that the typical vacuum cleaner can’t always suck up.

My Sweaters Look New Again

I love my sweaters, but after sometime, they begin to show signs of wear, and like my sofa cushions, pilling occurs as well. So you can imagine my delight when I used the Uproot Clean lint remover on a few of them and restored their appearance!

“78% of clothes & fabrics with lint/pills end up being thrown away” —Uproot Clean

What Are The Benefits Of The Uproot Clean Tool?

  • The Uproot Clean tool is eco-friendly, zero-waste and sustainable. It’s reusable, so there’s nothing to throw out.
  • It saves money because you will no longer need to purchase disposable varieties.
  • They’re a must-have for pet owners who are tired of struggling with pet hair. The Uproot Clean is a beast when it comes to grabbing loose hair.

The Uproot Clean Tool Is Available In Various Sizes

The Uproot Clean is available in 3 different sizes: Pro, Max and Mini. They are available in a bundle that allows you to save a little extra on your purchase.

The Max is great for larger projects like carpets, while the mini is perfect for travel. I like to keep my mini in my purse and use it on my shirt or leggings to get rid of annoying fuzz or pet hair.

See It In Action!

10 Awesome Products To Try For Plastic Free July

Kick Plastic To The Curb With These Eco-Friendly Alternatives

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

It’s that time of year again where people all over the world make a pledge to reduce plastic consumption: Plastic-Free July!

Every year, tons and tons of plastic waste ends up in landfills, on the streets of our local communities, highways and major water ways, where its presence poses a major threat to wildlife.

We are also unknowingly consuming plastic on a daily basis. Every time we sip through a plastic straw or swig water from a disposable bottle, we are allowing micro plastic to enter our bodies.

According to the Guardian, studies have even proven the existence of micro plastic in the placenta, which means that babies are being born pre-polluted with effects like reduced fetal growth.

Those reasons and more are why the Plastic-Free July movement is so critical. If we can challenge ourselves to use less plastic for at least a month, then we should be able to continue doing so well beyond the month of July.

With that said, we’ve hand selected 10 fabulous eco-friendly products that you can splurge on in honor of Plastic-Free July [and beyond], to help reduce plastic consumption in your community.

10 Swaps For A Successful Plastic Free July And Beyond

So this July, skip the plastic jug full of harsh chemicals, and try a pack of eco-friendly laundry detergent sheets! They might become a keeper!

Guppy Friend Microplastic Catcher

With each wash, a good amount of plastic fibers from synthetic textiles make their way from our washing machine into rivers and oceans. The Guppyfriend Washing Bag reduces the amount of microfibers that may enter these major waterways. That’s why it’s a great buy for Plastic-Free July and beyond!

Did you know that lint roller companies make a whopping $50 million a year? Consumers are literally making these guys rich while contributing to pollution. Lint roller sheets cannot be recycled, so one of the best swaps you can make is switching to reusable lint removers—and brands like Uproot Clean is a must-have!

3 Best Water Saving Showerheads To Own In 2022

Conserve Water And Save Money With These Easy To Install Low Flow Shower Heads

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

The average American will use close to 20 gallons of water per shower when using a standard 2.5 gallons per minute showerhead—but it doesn’t have to be that way.

By switching to a low-flow showerhead, the average American household can save up to 10,000 gallons of water a year! Not only is this beneficial to the environment, it’s also a nice reduction in your utility bills—especially if you live in a location where water is expensive.

And with so many innovative low-flow showerhead models to choose from, you will really enjoy the eco-friendly upgrade in your bathroom, and get a better shower experience.

How Does A Water Saving Showerhead Work?

A water-saving showerhead works by restricting the volume of water that is expelled—and depending on the showerhead, it does so by either regulating the flow or aerating the water (and some come equipped with settings that can do both).

The standard for low-flow showerheads is 2.0 gallons per minute or less. And today, some ultra low-flow showerheads offer as little as 1.2 GPM without sacrificing high pressure—incredible! Spoiler alert: one is on this list!

What To Consider When Buying A Water-Saving Showerhead

When considering a good-quality water-saving showerhead, you should consider important factors like flow rate, pressure, easy install, and aesthetics.

Type

There are several types of water-saving showerheads which consist of: fixed, handheld, and a combination of both. Each characteristic affects functionality, so it’s important to weight the pros and cons of each style. For example, a handheld showerhead would probably be more practical for children, and individuals with disabilities than a fixed design.

Flow Rate

A good quality water-saving showerhead should use less than 2 GPM, but shouldn’t sacrifice strong pressure. Most people opt for showerheads with diverse setting options that range from soft mist to a hard spray, with some even containing a handy pause button which temporarily halts water flow while you lather.

Aesthetic

All showerheads (not just low-flow showerheads) come in a wide variety of finishes such as matte, stainless steel, chrome, bronze, brass, nickel and more. And you’ll most likely want a finish that complements the rest of your bathroom decor.

Easy Install

Installing a showerhead is actually quite an easy DIY project that requires basic tools such as a screwdriver, wrench and a bit of plumbers tape. And low-flow showerheads are just as easy to install as standard varieties.

With that said, if you think that a low-flow showerhead is right for you, read on for our top 3 recommendations. Each one is super easy to install, and all are renter friendly!

The Delta low flow showerhead also comes with a Monitor Pressure-Balanced Valve Cartridge which ensures a consistent shower temperature by balancing the pressure of both hot and cold water. Hence, the next time someone flushes the toilet, you won’t get any surprises.

Lastly, we love the pause feature, which reduces water to a trickle and maintains temperature while you lather up that hair and bod. It’s a fantastic way to conserve water usage even more, and for that, we think this showerhead is worth every penny.

  • Protection from sudden temperature changes

Best Non-Toxic Beds For Toddlers And Kids

A Guide To Organic And Eco-Friendly Beds For Toddlers And Kids

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

If your little one is starting to climb out of their crib, and you’re worried about their safety, it might be time to transition them to a toddler bed!

With that said, most toddlers are ready to transition to a toddler bed between the ages of 18 months and 3.5 years of age.

This may seem a bit early for most parents, but most toddler beds offer safety and security that puts many parents at ease.

With features like a low to the ground design, and guard rails to prevent falls, it makes sense that most toddler beds are actually a safer choice than cribs when it comes to active toddlers.

Why Should You Buy A Non-Toxic Toddler Bed?

Many people aren’t aware that mainstream furniture actually contain chemicals like formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, and other carcinogens that can harm the central nervous system and cause long-term problems.

That’s why it’s so important to purchase a non-toxic toddler bed that is free from harmful chemicals, and will instead contribute to cleaner indoor air, creating a healthier space for your child (especially since they’ll be spending a large majority of their time in their room).

What Should You Look For In A Non-Toxic Toddler Bed?

Non-toxic toddler beds should be constructed from sustainably sourced wood—such as New Zealand Pine Wood—a fast growing pine known as the “super soft wood” of the 21st century, or birch, which can be sourced locally and has a very low carbon offset.

They should also be made using glue, paint and finish that are strictly non-toxic. Not only is this important for healthy air quality in the room, it’s also important because your little one will be making contact with the headboard and guard rails.

With that said, we encourage parents to purchase toddler beds that are GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means that they passed the most stringent emission standards and have been tested for over 10,000 volatile organic compounds (VOC’s).

If you’re looking for top notch recommendations, below are several non-toxic toddler beds for every budget that are not only Greenguard Gold Certified, but are also very stylish, and contain other important key features like guard rails, and a low to the ground design.

10 Best Reusable Water Bottles For 2022

The Best Plastic-Free Water Bottles For Ultimate Hydration

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Your reusable water bottle goes everywhere with you! We take them with us to the gym, to work, to school and more. Hydration flasks have become just as important as our phone and wallet.

Purchasing a reusable water bottle and breaking ties with single use plastic water bottles is an amazing feeling. Because consuming water out of a disposable plastic bottle isn’t just horrible for the environment, it’s also harmful to the human body.

When you drink out of disposable plastic bottles, you’re ingesting an entire petrie dish of hormone-disrupting chemicals and bacteria that can wreck havock on your health.

Purchasing a good quality reusable water bottle is the best thing that you can do not only for yourself, but for the environment. Every time a person refills a reusable water bottle, that’s one less disposable plastic water bottle that ends up in the landfill.

How Often Do I Clean A Reusable Water Bottle?

We make contact contact with our water bottles just as much as we do with our smart phones, hence, you should clean your reusable water bottle on a daily basis to prevent bacteria from growing on the inside, and to wash away germs on the outside.

While some water bottles can easily be thrown into the dishwasher, it’s better to hand wash and allow them to air dry upside down on a bottle rack (if possible). This is because some water bottles may have an outer coating such as paint/graphics that would melt off in a hot dishwasher.

Are All Reusable Water Bottles Safe To Drink From?

Not all reusable water bottles are created equal. Some are poorly made and will only last a few years, while others are extremely durable and can last a lifetime.

What a water bottle is made from is yet another important factor to consider. Many water bottles made from hard plastic, for example, may still leach trace amounts of various chemicals, even if they claim to be BPA free.

Hence, when shopping for a safe reusable water bottle, choose from either culinary-grade stainless steel, copper, silicone, titanium or glass. All five are the healthiest options in addition to being environmentally friendly, sustainable and recyclable.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is an iron alloy with added natural elements consisting of carbon, silicon, nitrogen, chromium, nickel and manganese. It’s incredibly durable and can insulate hot and cold liquid temperatures for up to 24 hours. Some stainless steel water bottles can affect the flavor of water—giving it a metallic aftertaste, but that depends. Some bottles are lined to eliminate that issue. Nonetheless, it is environmentally friendly, dishwasher safe, and does not rust.

Copper

Copper is a soft metal and an essential mineral in the human body. And there is debate over whether or not drinking from a copper vessel provides several health benefits such as boosting immune health and aiding digestion. However, one fact regarding copper holds true—it’s antibacterial. Copper kills germs and virus molecules on contact—making it a healthy metal for water storage. A con is that copper water bottles are known to “sweat” and oxidize—turning into green shade. Copper does not rust and is not dishwasher safe.

Titanium

Titanium is a lustrous transition metal that’s low in density, but high in strength—resulting in a phenomenal weight to strength ratio. It’s lighter than steel, and stronger than aluminum. It’s resistant to corrosion, and is non-reactive; so it won’t leach into your liquid. With that said, it doesn’t alter the taste of water like other metal drinking canteens tend to do. It is also dishwasher safe (best to place on top rack due to silicon ring that keeps cap from leaking). The only con is that it’s more expensive than other bottles because of all the positive attributes.

Glass

Glass is an amorphous solid formed by rapid cooling in the molten form. And though chemical compositions may vary, a common fundamental constituent is silicon dioxide. It can be recycled endlessly and doesn’t alter the taste of liquid. Glass water bottles are dishwasher safe, but have a potential to break if dropped or thrown. Luckily, some reusable glass water bottles come with reinforcements that prevent damage—like silicone sleeves.

Silicone

Silicone is eco-friendly and zero-waste because it’s durable. And many collapsible water bottles are made from this material because it’s durable, yet soft enough to where it can be made to roll up, or fold like an accordion. Silicone water bottles can also be recycled and are dishwasher safe. I’ve noticed, however, that they do have a particular after-taste, but if you don’t mind, then the convenience of their compact construction outweighs this issue.

Let’s take a look below at some of the most popular and best-selling plastic-free water bottles on the market for 2022!

Help Combat Plastic Waste With These 10 Eco-Friendly Drinking Straws

“Life’s not about expecting, hoping and wishing, it’s about doing, being and becoming.” — Mike Dooley

Doing little things like swapping disposable plastic for reusable alternatives is a great way to live a more sustainable lifestyle. And one of the most basic zero-waste swaps that you can make today, is investing in a reusable drinking straw.

While it seems like a small contribution toward saving the planet, purchasing a reusable straw actually makes you a proactive environmentalist—so cheers to joining the zero-waste movement!

What Are The Benefits Of Reusable Drinking Straws?

Reusable drinking straws are eco-friendly. The reality is that 500 million disposable straws make their way to landfills on a daily basis (and that’s just in the Unites States alone!) By saying no to single-use plastic straws when eating out, you’re helping to minimize plastic pollution on land and ocean.

Reusable straws are also much healthier for you! That’s because disposable straws are made with BPA, pthalates and polystyrene—all of which cause adverse effects on human beings. Polystyrene in particular, can leach Styrene—a neurotoxin which has been proven to cause cancer in animals.

Reusable straws are convenient for eating out, camping, and travel. Many coffee shops don’t even provide disposable straws anymore, so having a reusable straw on hand is becoming necessary!

Below are 10 high quality and ethically made reusable straws that are preferred by eco-minded individuals like yourself!

Say no to single-use straws and make the sustainable swap with these zero-waste alternatives!

Best Overall

FinalStraw

FinalStraw

Material | stainless steel + silicone hybrid

YouTube: FinalStraw

FinalStraw has my vote for “best overall” straw because it has so many cool features. For starters, this reusable stainless steel straw contains silicone tips on both ends—and the amount of silicone isn’t overwhelming. Some people simply cannot stand the aftertaste of silicone, but still want a cushion to protect their teeth from any metal contact. FinalStraw is also collapsible, bendable, and folds into a compact carrying case that can literally be attached to your belt loop, or stored on your keychain. It’s high quality and simply just the ultimate travel straw.

Best Stainless Steel Straw

Bestowed Essentials

We particularly love this brand because every Bestowed Essentials product is vegan and certified cruelty-free by PETA.

Best Bamboo Straw

Jungle Straws

Jungle Straws

Materials | Bamboo

My vote for best bamboo straws goes to Jungle Culture’s Jungle Straws—mainly because this 6 piece set is near and dear to my heart. I’ve been using these particular bamboo straws for a quite a few months now, and I have found little to no fault in these. These bamboo straws are durable, easy to clean, and come with a charming little jute carrying pouch that can hold up to two straws. Each straw is ethically hand-carved in Vietnam, and the straws ship free to the United States from the United Kingdom.

Best Hybrid Straw

OXO

OXO Good Grips

Material | Stainless Steel + Silicone

The OXO Good Grips is a stainless steel straw with an adjustable silicone sleeve that can also be removed for cleaning. Many people love this straw because you can adjust the length by simply lowering or extending the sleeve to meet your needs. This particular set comes with two straws, which is convenient if you have a significant other or children, and the hard case makes this a convenient travel utensil for longer trips.

Best Silicone Straw

GIR

Get It Right (GIR)

Material | Silicone

The GIR reusable silicone straws come in sets that include a squeegee, and a couple of lightweight carrying cases. These nontoxic straws are available in various sizes, but we love the traveler size, which fits perfectly in a tall hydration bottle. These straws are soft yet durable, and will last an extremely long time. You can also customize the length by snipping off an inch or two!

Best Glass Straw

Simply Straws

Simply Straws

Material | Borosilicate Glass

The Simply Straws brand makes high quality glass straws made from durable and chip-resistant borosilicate glass, and these nonporous reusable straws come equipped with hemp storage sleeves for travel. These hypoallergenic straws are available in various colors, and are perfect for those who prefer a straw that doesn’t alter the taste of liquid, like other straws tend to do.

Best Titanium Straw

Silca

Silca

Material | Anodized Titanium

The Silca anodized titanium straw is lightweight yet durable, and preferred amongst minimalists who engage in frequent travel and outdoor adventures. This straw is made from aerospace-grade metal and has no aftertaste, unlike other metal straws. This zero-waste straw comes in a set of two, and includes one bent and one straight straw. The only downside to these reusable straws is that they do not come with a storage case.

Best Compact Straw

Zoku

Zoku

Material | Stainless Steel + Silicone Hybrid

If you’re looking for a reusable straw that can be stored in a small and compact carrying case, then look no further than the Zoku telescopic pocket straw. This eco-friendly straw is made from stainless steel and contains a silicone mouth piece. You can keep it at 4 inches to sip a cocktail, or extend it to 9inches and sip out of a tall cup! It’s available in many fun colors and the storage case can be strapped onto a keychain.

Best For Hot Liquids

Koffie Straw

Koffie Straw

Material | Silicone

The Koffie Straw is the best reusable straw for coffee lovers. It’s made from silicone, which means that it won’t conduct heat and get overly hot, and the mouthpiece has a clever shape to help keep liquid from making contact with your teeth—preventing stains. These reusable straws do come with a cleaning brush, but unfortunately they do not offer a storage case.

Best For Wine Night

SwigLife

Swig Life

Material | Stainless Steel

Swig Life, the brand behind some of the cutest wine tumblers, now makes the cutest reusable straws that are absolutely perfect for a girl’s night. Best Organic Mattress Brands Of 2022

Eco-Friendly Mattress Brands For Healthy Sleep

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Whether you’re moving out on your own for the first time, or just need to replace the current mattress that you’ve been sleeping on for decades, one thing is certain:

You want organic and healthy sleep without all the chemicals!

Why Choose A Sustainable Mattress?

Adulting is hard enough, and at the end of the day, you want to fall asleep on a mattress that offers pressure relief and posture support, without compromising your health.

The typical [non-organic] mattress is constructed from material that has most likely been treated with pesticides, flame retardants and many other hormone disrupting chemicals.

According to WebMD, “Mattresses are known to release minute amounts of gaseous chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs come mainly from the polyurethane used in the mattress, but also from other chemicals used in flame retardants and plastics, the researchers said.”

A green mattress, on the other hand, is made from all-natural and certified organic material that doesn’t pollute your sleeping environment and still meets fire-retardant and other safety guidelines.

Lastly, organic mattress brands understand the environmental impact that a mattress can have on the environment when it’s discarded. So you’ll be happy to know that many of these green mattress companies offer recycling programs for certain mattress parts, and even donate a percentage of sales to environmental organizations such as 1% For The Planet, and many others.

What Are The Benefits Of An Organic Mattress?

Fewer allergens: Unlike a conventional mattress, which is typically made from Polyurethane, a sustainable mattress is made with material(s) like natural latex, organic cotton and organic wool—both of which are resistant to dust mites and great for allergy sufferers. Wool especially, is hypoallergenic, naturally antimicrobial, and flame resistant.

Comfort: Natural fibers are more breathable and do a better job at wicking away moisture which results in cooler sleep. It’s no wonder that those who own a sustainable mattress fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

Durability: An organic mattress is far more sustainable than a conventional mattress because organic wool and natural latex, in particular, last an extremely long time (about 15-20 years).

What To Look For When Shopping For An Organic Mattress?

When shopping for an organic mattress, you should consider sustainable certifications and environmentally friendly material which ensure that ethical standards are being met.

Sustainable mattress brands should also be transparent and willing to list all material used to create each mattress.

A sustainable mattress should be made with natural fibers like natural latex, organic cotton, sustainably sourced wool and nontoxic glue (if any).

Reputable certifications include GREENGUARD, OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GOLS, CertiPUR-US, OTCO, Made Safe, and Green America.

Below is our list of top-rated organic and environmentally friendly mattress brands that offer a great sleep experience.

All of the organic mattress brands in this article also meet federal and state flammability requirements, without the use of harsh flame retardants and chemicals.

Best Eco-Friendly Crib Brands For Safe Sleep

An Eco-Minded Parents’ Guide To Non-Toxic Cribs With Safety Certifications

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Babies deserve a safe and healthy sleep environment, and because they’ll be spending a good amount of time in their nursery, it’s important for parents to consider non-toxic furniture—especially when it comes to cribs.

Today’s parents are more eco-minded when shopping for nursery furniture—because they know that eco-friendly furniture is made with non-toxic chemicals, and will contribute to cleaner air quality within the home (especially because a lot of baby furniture is made with formaldehyde, which is a toxic chemical linked to allergies, asthma and even cancer).

Seasoned parents also know that when babies start to go through the teething process, they will eventually start to mouth and chew on crib rails—so it’s crucial to choose a crib that contains natural wood and a non-toxic finish, to prevent toxins from entering their baby’s body.

Why Choose An Eco-Friendly Crib For Your Nursery?

Aside from the fact that eco-friendly cribs are non-toxic and contribute to better air quality in your child’s bedroom, eco friendly cribs are also sustainably sourced and responsibly manufactured.

The non-toxic cribs recommended within this article are all natural wood, and made from sustainably sourced New Zealand Pine, which is one of the most sustainable and renewable wood resources in New Zealand, and other sustainably harvested wood such as beechwood, walnut and more.

What Should You Look For When Shopping For A Non-Toxic Crib?

Because anyone can “greenwash” a product and claim that it’s non-toxic and eco-friendly, it’s important to look for reputable certifications which prove that a crib has indeed met, and/or, exceeded safety standards and emissions testing.

One of the best “green” certifications that a crib can have is a GREENGUARD certification. Cribs that are GREENGUARD Certified, have been tested for over 10,000 chemical emissions and volatile organic compounds. Not all cribs and nursery furniture will have this certification, but will come close (as long as they’re tested by a third party).

When it comes to product safety, it’s important that cribs meet or exceed CPSC requirements through 3rd party testing, and conduct annual testing with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA).

Now, let’s take a look below at some of the safest and environmentally friendly crib brands for your little one to enjoy! You’ll find that our picks are practical, functional and stylish!

10 Best Zero Waste laundry Detergent Brands

The 10 Best Non-Toxic Laundry Detergents Every Household Should Own!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

One of the most used cleaning products in the home is laundry detergent—and it’s used on products that make constant contact with our skin—clothing.

For years, consumers have purchased laundry detergent based on factors like popularity, price and performance, while completely turning a blind eye to the ingredient label—until now.

With cancer and other health conditions sky rocketing in the past couple of decades, people are starting to become more aware that certain environmental factors—to include household cleaning agents—are to blame for society’s declining health and overall life expectancy.

Mainstream multi-purpose cleaners, air fresheners, scented candles, and many laundry detergents are just a small example of household items that are actually packed full of carcinogens.

But thankfully, alternatives are available for a lot of household products, and in this article, we’re going to focus on laundry detergent alternatives for a non-toxic and environmentally friendly laundry routine.

Why Should You Switch To A Plant-Based Laundry Detergent?

As mentioned above, mainstream laundry detergents contain ingredients that are actually harmful to our health—but how?

Well, even in the rinse cycle, detergent doesn’t entirely wash out—it lingers in the fibers. And when we sweat, our pores absorb whatever leaches out, resulting in skin conditions like rash and eczema.

That’s why it’s especially important to at least invest in non-toxic laundry detergent when it comes to your children, as well as undergarments, which are tight fitting, and can actually be the cause of your recurring BV (bacterial vaginitis) due to all the synthetic chemicals.

How To Choose The Right Zero Waste Laundry Detergent

Choosing an all-natural, zero-waste laundry detergent can be confusing for anyone—especially because there are so many different kinds like: pods, sheets, powders, liquids and even “berries”. But, there are certain qualities to look for when shopping for eco-friendly and natural laundry detergents and those are:

  • Paraben Free
  • Pthalate Free
  • Phosphate Free
  • Bleach & Dye Free
  • Vegan & Cruelty Free
  • Recyclable & Compostable Packaging
  • Plastic-Free Packaging
  • Hypoallergenic & Dermatologist Tested

And to help make your decision easier, I’ve made a list of zero waste detergent brands that I have tried personally and found that they work very well on both stains and odor (as I’ve had the privilege to test a few out, while others I’ve purchased based on curiosity).

And for a complete zero-waste laundry routine, I recommend switching from dryer sheets to organic wool dryer balls and a Cora Microfiber Ball, which catches the microfibers that naturally shed from clothes in the wash, and end up in our waterways.

Altogether, these alternative laundry products greatly reduce your carbon footprint—because laundry is something we do often and contributes greatly to environmental pollution whether we like it or not.

Top 10 Zero Waste Laundry Detergents

EarthBreeze

Brand | EarthBreeze Laundry Strips

EarthBreeze laundry strips are my zero waste detergent of choice. These pre-measured laundry strips are plant-based and smell absolutely fabulous. I also can’t stress enough how convenient these detergent strips are for travel, and can easily be stashed in a baby wipe box or pencil case. For my full review of EarthBreeze laundry strips, click here.

Dropps

Brand | Dropps Laundry Detergent Pods

If you’re someone who loves the convenience of laundry pods minus the plastic waste, then you’ll love Dropps eco-friendly laundry detergent pods. This low-waste laundry detergent is wrapped in biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol film and packaged in a recyclable and compostable cardboard box to minimize single-use waste.

Bestowed Essentials

Brand | Bestowed Essentials Zero Waste Laundry Powder

This zero-waste laundry powder from Bestowed Essentials is an easy swap in making your laundry routine plastic-free. Just one tablespoon of this eco-friendly detergent will get your clothing nice and clean, and you’ll feel good knowing that the detergent bag and inner liner are both compostable.

TrueEarth

Brand | TrueEarth Laundry Strips

TrueEarth is another fantastic eco-friendly laundry strip brand with pre-measured laundry strips. I love that they offer several scent options including a formula made just for baby clothing, and that they use recycled material for their packaging. The downside to laundry sheets is that they can sometimes clump when used in front load washers—resulting in slight goo on your fabric. I have a top load washer and the cascading water does a great job at dissolving these.

NaturOli

Brand | NaturOli Soap Nuts / Soap Berries

Soap berries (better known as soap nuts) are perhaps the most natural and affordable zero-waste alternative to mainstream laundry detergents. The shells of these Indian soap berries release saponin (a natural cleaning agent) when they come in contact with water. They are also pesticide free, anti-fungal and completely compostable—making these soap ‘nuts’ a true zero waste laundry detergent alternative. The downside is that soap nuts must be used with warm or hot water to activate.

Nature First

Brand | Nature First Soap Berry Laundry Pods

If you love soap berries, but prefer the convenience of laundry pods, then the soap berry laundry pods are a fantastic laundry detergent alternative for your household. These eco-friendly laundry pods by Nature First are produced using a proprietary natural water extraction method to pull the super-concentrated cleansing agents (saponin surfactants) to create a soap berry concentrate, and they’re packaged in a compostable bag.

Sheets Laundry Club

Brand | Sheets Laundry Club Laundry Sheets

The Sheets liquid free laundry sheets are slightly bigger than their laundry strip competitors and do a fantastic job when it comes to stain and odor removal. The scented variety does have a very strong scent, but once used in the wash, clothing comes out with a subtle fragrance that’s not overpowering.

Meliora

Brand | Meliora Eco Laundry Powder

The Meliora Natural Powder Laundry Detergent is made with highly concentrated, all natural ingredients like baking soda, pH boosting washing soda, and skin softening coconut oil, which easily removes stains. This non-toxic laundry powder is packed in a recyclable and reusable stainless steel canister, and the brand donates 2% of all sales to environmental non-profit organizations.

Grove Co.

Brand | Grove Collaborative Ultra Concentrated Liquid Laundry Detergent

If you prefer to stick with a liquid detergent, then Grove Collaborative is one of the best go-to brands for an all-natural liquid detergent—and their’s is ultra concentrated. What I love about Grove Collaborative is that is that they will send you a prepaid envelope so that you can mail them your empty detergent pouch and they will recycle it through Terra Cycle. The only downside to this non-toxic liquid detergent is that you have to buy a separate bottle to store and measure the contents.

Lazy Coconuts

Brand | Lazy Coconuts Eco Friendly Detergent Strips

The Lazy Coconuts eco-friendly laundry strips are yet another one of my favorite zero-waste laundry strips that are made with plant-based ingredients and come in recyclable packaging. I also love that they have a “gentle” formula for baby’s sensitive skin.

Part of living a sustainable lifestyle means forgoing fast fashion and embracing sustainable shoes and clothing.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with fast fashion, it’s a term that is used to describe the mass production of “trendy” shoes and clothing at a fast rate and at a low cost.

While fast fashion may result in affordable shoes and clothing for consumers, this approach tends to fail long-term. You see, if you purchase cheap fashion, chances are, you won’t get to wear it for very long. It’s poor quality. Perhaps that’s why people are constantly buying new shoes—all the more reason to switch to sustainable shoe brands.

Advertisements

Sustainable footwear is made from eco-friendly material that’s either recycled or plant-based. Some good examples of environmentally friendly material for sustainable shoe making consist of plastic bottles, hemp, cork, algae foam, organic cotton and natural rubber.

Sustainable shoe brands are also transparent. Go on any sustainable shoe website and you’ll see their backstory, where they source their material from, and where their factories are located—something you don’t typically see with big box brands.

With that said, sustainable shoes are ethically made in factories that are void of child labor. Some of them even provide healthcare and education opportunities to their employees—even if they’re located overseas. In other words, these factors help make a difference in poverty stricken locations. Hence, by buying a pair of sustainable shoes, you’re supporting a good cause.

If all of the info above sounds good and you’re ready to add some sustainable footwear into your daily routine, check out these eco-friendly shoe brands.
