Whether you’re moving out on your own for the first time, or just need to replace the current mattress that you’ve been sleeping on for decades, one thing is certain:

You want organic and healthy sleep without all the chemicals!

Why Choose A Sustainable Mattress?

Adulting is hard enough, and at the end of the day, you want to fall asleep on a mattress that offers pressure relief and posture support, without compromising your health.

The typical [non-organic] mattress is constructed from material that has most likely been treated with pesticides, flame retardants and many other hormone disrupting chemicals.

According to WebMD, “Mattresses are known to release minute amounts of gaseous chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs come mainly from the polyurethane used in the mattress, but also from other chemicals used in flame retardants and plastics, the researchers said.”

A green mattress, on the other hand, is made from all-natural and certified organic material that doesn’t pollute your sleeping environment and still meets fire-retardant and other safety guidelines.

What Are The Benefits Of An Organic Mattress?

Fewer allergens: Unlike a conventional mattress, which is typically made from Polyurethane, a sustainable mattress is made with material(s) like organic cotton and organic wool—both of which are resistant to dust mites and great for allergy sufferers. Wool especially, is hypoallergenic, naturally antimicrobial, and flame resistant.

Comfort: Natural fibers are more breathable and do a better job at wicking away moisture which results in cooler sleep. It’s no wonder that those who own a sustainable mattress fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

Durability: An organic mattress is far more sustainable than a conventional mattress because organic wool and natural latex, in particular, last an extremely long time (about 15-20 years).

What To Look For When Shopping For An Organic Mattress?

When shopping for an organic mattress, you should consider sustainable certifications and environmentally friendly material which ensure that ethical standards are being met.

Sustainable mattress brands should also be transparent and willing to list all material used to create each mattress.

A sustainable mattress should be made with natural fibers like natural latex, organic cotton, sustainably sourced wool and nontoxic glue (if any).

Reputable certifications include GREENGUARD, OEKO-TEX, GOTS, GOLS, CertiPUR-US, OTCO, Made Safe, and Green America.

Below is our list of top-rated organic and environmentally friendly mattress brands that offer a great sleep experience.

All of the organic mattress brands in this article also meet federal and state flammability requirements, without the use of harsh flame retardants and chemicals.

Best Eco-Friendly Crib Brands For Safe Sleep

An Eco-Minded Parents’ Guide To Top-Rated Non-Toxic Cribs With Safety Certifications

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Babies deserve a safe and healthy sleep environment, and because they’ll be spending a good amount of time in their nursery, it’s important for parents to consider non-toxic furniture—especially when it comes to cribs.

Today’s parents are more eco-minded when shopping for nursery furniture—because they know that eco-friendly furniture is made with non-toxic chemicals, and will contribute to cleaner air quality within the home (especially because a lot of baby furniture is made with formaldehyde, which is a toxic chemical linked to allergies, asthma and even cancer).

Seasoned parents also know that when babies start to go through the teething process, they will eventually start to mouth and chew on crib rails—so it’s crucial to choose a crib that contains natural wood and a non-toxic finish, to prevent toxins from entering their baby’s body.

Why Choose An Eco-Friendly Crib For Your Nursery?

Aside from the fact that eco-friendly cribs are non-toxic and contribute to better air quality in your child’s bedroom, eco friendly cribs are also sustainably sourced and responsibly manufactured.

The non-toxic cribs recommended within this article are all natural wood, and made from sustainably sourced New Zealand Pine, which is one of the most sustainable and renewable wood resources in New Zealand, and other sustainably harvested wood such as beechwood, walnut and more.

As far as the mattress board and any pullout drawers, all of these sustainable cribs use CARB II compliant MDF (engineered wood).

What Should You Look For When Shopping For A Non-Toxic Crib?

Because anyone can “greenwash” a product and claim that it’s non-toxic and eco-friendly, it’s important to look for reputable certifications which prove that a crib has indeed met, and/or, exceeded safety standards and emissions testing.

One of the best “green” certifications that a crib can have is a GREENGUARD certification. Cribs that are GREENGUARD Certified, have been tested for over 10,000 chemical emissions and volatile organic compounds. Not all cribs and nursery furniture will have this certification, but will come close (as long as they’re tested by a third party).

When it comes to product safety, it’s important that cribs meet or exceed CPSC requirements through 3rd party testing, and conduct annual testing with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA).

Now, let’s take a look below at some of the safest and environmentally friendly crib brands for your little one to enjoy! You’ll find that our picks are practical, functional and stylish!

Best Reusable Training Pants For Toddlers

The Best Reusable Cloth Underwear For Sustainable Potty Training

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

My 3 year old just recently mastered potty training, but unfortunately, nighttime accidents sometimes still occur—and thank goodness for mattress protectors!

For a while we’ve had her in disposable nighttime diapers but eventually I decided that investing in a few reusable nighttime diapers was a better alternative.

Disposable diapers, no matter how ‘sustainable’ or ‘biodegradable’ they are, still contribute to landfill waste. Unless something is compostable and is actually placed into a compost bin with the necessary components to help break it down, it’s just going to sit on top of trash along with everything else.

Then there’s the money issue—as a society, we’re literally buying a product that we throw away the very same day. It makes much more sense to invest in a few top notch quality reusable diapers or training pants instead.

What To Look For When Buying Reusable Training Pants

When shopping for quality reusable training pants, look for an absorbent inner layer and a waterproof outer layer—because those are important features.

When I first started shopping for reusable training pants, I honestly couldn’t find very many brands that offered what I was searching for.

I also made a huge mistake. I bought what I thought were waterproof training pants, but really these are just “thick cotton” underwear that are only good for catching a tiny amount of dribble. And I purchase them because they were marketed as ”training pants” (kind of deceiving). Here is my purchase:

No, just…no.

Are these reusable cotton “training” pants super cute? Absolutely. Are they a smart buy when potty training? Absolutely not. And if you do get these, I highly recommend purchasing additional inserts to absorb the pee, because these do not—we learned the hard way.

I quickly realized that many reusable training pants are mis-advertised as waterproof —clearly they’re not—because my daughter’s pee went right through these and her bedsheets were soaking wet in the middle of the night.

I did decide to keep these though, because my daughter is tall and slender and these help keep certain pants and leggings to stay on her hips better during the day.

So what reusable training pants did I finally end up buying that are leak-proof and actually works for both day and nighttime potty training?

The Grovia My Choice Trainers.

After our disappointing experience with the “thick cotton” underwear, I decided to try something a little more “high quality“, and came across the brand Grovia, and their line of My Choice trainers reusable training underwear with a convenient pull-up design.

I ended up ordering 3 pairs—plus two additional organic cotton inserts (boosters) for extra nighttime protection (just in case).

When they arrived in the mail, my initial reaction to seeing these reusable training pants for the first time was “wow—these are really pretty”.

The colors are warm and earthy, the fabric is well sewn together and soft to the touch, and they contain snap buttons in several key areas which allow for alterations as baby grows.

These cloth training pants also contain an inner pocket with an absorbent hidden layer of hemp/cotton blend, where you can add a booster cloth for extra absorbency during nighttime.

Do The Grovia MyChoice Trainers Fit Comfortably?

The Grovia reusable training pants come in one size and they run small—but don’t worry, they’re adjustable!

My 3 year old is really slender (under 30 pounds) and they fit her perfectly. So for a thicker baby or toddler, I would definitely recommend purchasing at least one set of their side-flex plus panels which attach via snap buttons to the side of the trainers and comfortably expand the fit.

My daughter sleeps comfortably in these trainers and she’s excited to put these on every evening after her bath.

Great For Both Day Wear And Nighttime

The Grovia My Choice Trainers are a great way to help your little one transition from diapers to using the potty like a big kid.

They’re also great for just nighttime wear if your little one has a habit of wetting the bed.

Reusable cloth training pants are not only zero waste and environmentally friendly, but also non-toxic and help save money that can be better spent on other necessities.

So if you’re tired of spending money on disposable nighttime diapers and want a more sustainable way to potty train your little one, then I definitely recommend the Grovia My Choice Trainers.

Best Reusable Toddler Snack Containers: Plastic Free And Sustainable

The Best Non-Toxic Reusable Snack Containers For Busy Toddlers

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

When my children were toddlers, there were several essential items (besides diapers) that I absolutely had to have with us during outings at all times: a change of clothes, reusable sippy cups and snack containers.

Reusable snack containers are a wonderful feeding tool for older babies and toddlers that is often overlooked when parents shop for feeding supplies.

Snack containers are great for both indoor snack time as well as travel. It’s a great way for little ones to feed themselves in between main meals, and offers a chance for them to strengthen motor skills.

When I’m out and about, I often see a majority of parents hand their little ones snacks in single-use plastic snack bags—which are neither healthy for the little one, nor the environment.

I also see a lot of reusable plastic snack containers, but those also contain chemicals that can leach onto food—even though they’re labeled as “BPA” free, companies always find loop-holes in manufacturing, and unfortunately, trade BPA in for other estrogen mimicking chemicals to create their product.

That’s why when it comes to snack containers—I prefer silicone, plant-based, cloth and stainless steel containers. And luckily, some of the best toddler snack containers are made from these types of material(s).

Below are my top picks for the best plastic-free snack cups for toddlers that are perfect for both indoor snack time as well as outdoor adventures.

Some of these recommended toddler snack cups are multifunctional and can be used interchangeably as beverage containers as well.

Another feature that I really love about some of these eco-friendly snack containers is a soft flap lid that prevents spills, yet is gentle enough to allow little hands fo reach in and grab a healthy amount of food.

You’ll find that some come in the form of reusable pouches, resealable bags and collapsible cups—giving you several zero-waste options to choose from.

Brave Justice Kids Co

It’s also important to point out that these plastic-free snack cups are also especially great for older babies who are teething because the textured handle can double as a teether.

Zip Top

The Zip Top silicone snack bags for toddlers are an awesome alternative to disposable plastic snack bags! These reusable silicone bags stay open and zip shut—making it easy for your little one to grab food while preventing spills! These bags also come in assorted colors and each contains a different animal.

The Mushie cup is the perfect self feeding container for toddlers on the go. It contains two easy grip handles and a flappy lid to prevent spills. I also really love the earthy colors that this cup is available in!

For a delicious snack on the go in the form of rice cereal, yogurt or smoothie, the Haakaa reusable silicone pouch is the perfect container! This reusable snack pouch is made from food grade silicone, and has a slow flow which helps your baby or toddler get just the right amount of food to prevent choking.

This spill-proof snack cup for toddlers is made from silicone and is incredibly easy for little ones to hold and grab out of. The silicone flaps keep food from spilling out while the inside contains measurements that allow for a precise fill!

The Stasher reusable silicone snack bags are the perfect size for little hands. These zero waste snack bags contain a ‘pinch loc’ seal and can even be written on. You can find these cute little reusable snack containers at The Natural Baby Co! They’re also great for mom’s snacks too!

The Hofish collapsible silicone snack cup for toddlers is multifunctional and comes equipped with a lanyard, which is perfect for travel! This plastic-free cup can be used as both a snack container as well as a sippy cup, and also includes a lid as well as a reusable straw.

The Bumkins cloth snack bag is an awesome alternative to single-use zip-lock bags. These reusable snack bags for kids can be washed and used over and over and again. I love the cute designs and the fact that older kids can fill these up with healthy snacks too!

Carrot’s Den

These super soft acorn-shaped toddler snack containers come in a pack of two and contain removable flappy lids and two easy grip handles—making these silicone cups multifunctional. Place water in one container and crackers in the other.

10 Most Effective Zero-Waste Laundry Detergents

The 10 Best All-Natural Laundry Detergents For A Non-Toxic And Eco-Friendly Laundry Routine.

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

One of the most used cleaning products in the home is laundry detergent—and it’s used on products that make constant contact with our skin—clothing.

For years, consumers have purchased laundry detergent based on factors like popularity, price and performance, while completely turning a blind eye to the ingredient label—until now.

With cancer and other health conditions sky rocketing in the past couple of decades, people are starting to become more aware that certain environmental factors—to include household cleaning agents—are to blame for society’s declining health and overall life expectancy.

Mainstream multi-purpose cleaners, air fresheners, scented candles, and many laundry detergents are just a small example of household items that are actually packed full of carcinogens.

But thankfully, alternatives are available for a lot of household products, and in this article, we’re going to focus on laundry detergent alternatives for a non-toxic and environmentally friendly laundry routine.

Why Should You Switch To A Natural Laundry Detergent?

As mentioned above, mainstream laundry detergents contain ingredients that are actually harmful to our health—but how?

Well, even in the rinse cycle, detergent doesn’t entirely wash out—it lingers in the fibers. And when we sweat, our pores absorb whatever leaches out, resulting in skin conditions like rash and eczema.

That’s why it’s especially important to at least invest in non-toxic laundry detergent when it comes to your children, as well as undergarments, which are tight fitting, and can actually be the cause of your recurring BV (bacterial vaginitis) due to all the synthetic chemicals.

How To Choose The Right Zero Waste Detergent

Choosing an all-natural, zero-waste laundry detergent can be confusing for anyone—especially because there are so many different kinds like: pods, sheets, powders, liquids and even “berries”. But, there are certain qualities to look for when shopping for eco-friendly and natural laundry detergents and those are:

  • Paraben Free
  • Pthalate Free
  • Phosphate Free
  • Bleach & Dye Free
  • Vegan & Cruelty Free
  • Recyclable & Compostable Packaging
  • Plastic-Free Packaging
  • Hypoallergenic & Dermatologist Tested

And to help make your decision easier, I’ve made a list of zero waste detergent brands that I have tried personally and found that they work very well on both stains and odor (as I’ve had the privilege to test a few out, while others I’ve purchased based on curiosity).

And for a complete zero-waste laundry routine, I recommend switching from dryer sheets to organic wool dryer balls and a Cora Microfiber Ball, which catches the microfibers that naturally shed from clothes in the wash, and end up in our waterways.

Altogether, these alternative laundry products greatly reduce your carbon footprint—because laundry is something we do often and contributes greatly to environmental pollution whether we like it or not.

EarthBreeze Laundry Strips

EarthBreeze laundry strips are my zero waste detergent of choice. These pre-measured laundry strips are plant-based and smell absolutely fabulous. TrueEarth Laundry Strips

TrueEarth is another fantastic eco-friendly laundry strip brand with pre-measured laundry strips. I love that they offer several scent options including a formula made just for baby clothing, and that they use recycled material for their packaging. I have a top load washer and the cascading water does a great job at dissolving these.

NaturOli Soap Nuts / Soap Berries

Soap berries (better known as soap nuts) are perhaps the most natural and affordable zero-waste alternative to mainstream laundry detergents. The shells of these Indian soap berries release saponin (a natural cleaning agent) when they come in contact with water. They are also pesticide free, anti-fungal and completely compostable—making these soap ‘nuts’ a true zero waste laundry detergent alternative. The downside is that soap nuts must be used with warm or hot water to activate.

Grove Co.

If you prefer to stick with a liquid detergent, then Grove Collaborative is one of the best go-to brands for an all-natural liquid detergent—and their’s is ultra concentrated. What I love about Grove Collaborative is that is that they will send you a prepaid envelope so that you can mail them your empty detergent pouch and they will recycle it through Terra Cycle. The only downside to this non-toxic liquid detergent is that you have to buy a separate bottle to store and measure the contents.

Part of living a sustainable lifestyle means forgoing fast fashion and embracing sustainable shoes and clothing.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with fast fashion, it’s a term that is used to describe the mass production of “trendy” shoes and clothing at a fast rate and at a low cost.

While fast fashion may result in affordable shoes and clothing for consumers, this approach tends to fail long-term. You see, if you purchase cheap fashion, chances are, you won’t get to wear it for very long. It’s poor quality. Perhaps that’s why people are constantly buying new shoes—all the more reason to switch to sustainable shoe brands.

Sustainable footwear is made from eco-friendly material that’s either recycled or plant-based. Some good examples of environmentally friendly material for sustainable shoe making consist of plastic bottles, hemp, cork, algae foam, organic cotton and natural rubber.

Sustainable shoe brands are also transparent. Go on any sustainable shoe website and you’ll see their backstory, where they source their material from, and where their factories are located—something you don’t typically see with big box brands.

With that said, sustainable shoes are ethically made in factories that are void of child labor. Some of them even provide healthcare and education opportunities to their employees—even if they’re located overseas. In other words, these factors help make a difference in poverty stricken locations. Hence, by buying a pair of sustainable shoes, you’re supporting a good cause.

If all of the info above sounds good and you’re ready to add some sustainable footwear into your daily routine, check out these eco-friendly shoe brands.

Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brands For Kids

A List Of Water-Based And Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brands For Kids That Are Mom Approved

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Little kids copy everything we grownups do—which means they want to paint their nails to look pretty just like mommy.

But, as we all know, conventional “grown up” nail polish isn’t safe for little ones to use. Nail polish is full of unhealthy chemicals and toxins that can harm your little one via fumes and accidental ingestion (kids like to put their hands into their mouth a lot). And it’s not worth risking their health and safety.

We recommend water-based nail polish instead. There are quite a few nail polish brands that make baby and kid-friendly peel-off nail polish that’s made with non-toxic ingredients and is completely safe to use.

A Little Nail Polish History

Nail color has been around for quite some time. In fact, you’ll be pretty surprised to know that the trend dates back all the to way to 3,200 BC, where the Babylonians engaged in nail painting prior to battle, in order to distinguish rank.

Likewise, the practice was used by the Chinese dating back to 3,000 BC to distinguish class and dynasty. And ofcourse, by the Egyptians.

Only, nail color wasn’t made of the same toxic ingredients that we’re familiar with today. Not even close.

Ancient nail “polish” was made from natural ingredients such as kohl (a dark powder similar to charcoal), beeswax, and plant dyes—there was no formaldehyde, acetone or sulfates.

Nail polish today, on the other hand, is formulated with harsh and harmful chemicals, animal products and embalming fluid—check out 16 of the most common chemicals used in nail polish today:

1. Formaldehyde, 2. Formaldehyde Resin, 3. Toluene, 4. Xylene, 5. Acetone, 6. Phthalates (including DBP), 7. Camphor, 8. Parabens, 9. Ethyl Tosylamide, 10. Triphenyl Phosphate (TPP), 11. Animal-derived ingredients, 12. Styrene, 13. Bisphenol A, 14. Glycol Ether of Series E (Glycol ethers derived from ethylene oxide), 15. Nonylphenol ethoxylate, 16. Sulfate

Animals are also used to create certain shades of nail polish. You know that really pretty, pearly shimmer in nailpolish? That, unfortunately, is a result of fish scales. Then you have certain colors, like red shades, which require the need for boiled beetles, and animal fat to achieve a preferred thickness.

Reasons To Use Water-Based Polish

Water based nail polish is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and are void of harmful fumes; some are completely odorless while others contain fun safe scents. Nail polish for kids is also cruelty-free and does not contain any animal products.

Another great benefit to using water-based nail polish for kids is that most brands create ‘peel off’ formulas—which is convenient because kids like to switch up color all the time, plus, the use of a nail polish remover is not necessary!

If you’re considering purchasing water-based vegan nail polish for your child, then take a look at our recommended list of brands below!

Piggy Paint

Piggy Paint is a premium water based nail polish brand for kids that moms have trusted for the last 12 years and counting. Piggy Paint nail polish is odorless and contains zero toxic chemicals—no wonder their tagline is: “as safe as mud”. It’s even safe for pregnant moms to use as well! It’s also important to note that Piggy paint, though water-based, is not a peel off polish and does require nail polish remover (which they also make and is likewise non-toxic).

5 Best Reusable Face Masks For The Gym

Best Breathable Face Masks For Athletes And Gym Enthusiasts

2020 may be over, but the Corona virus isn’t letting up anytime soon. That’s why many States continue to enforce a mask mandate to keep everyone safe.

And even if you reside in a state where face masks are a personal choice, many gyms and fitness centers may still enforce a mask rule. That’s because a gym is one of those places where are people are packed together, breathing heavily and sweating like crazy.

However, when it comes to playing sports or working out, no face mask is going to be 100% comfortable—that’s just the reality. You can, however, find a descent face mask that’s tolerable, and allows you to power through your workout without making you feel as though you’re suffocating.

Features To Look For When Choosing A Fitness Mask

Moisture Wicking Fabric

When shopping for a sports mask, one of the most important features you should look for is moisture wicking and anti-microbial fabric—because you’re going to sweat. And when you wear a mask, all of that sweat (along with the dead skin cells, oil and bacteria that you already have on your face) is going to clog your pores even more—resulting in acne.

With that said, you definitely don’t want a mask that sits flat against your face and collapses against your mouth when you’re inhaling.

Face mask filters aren’t needed, but they are a plus when it comes to working out—they’re great for preventing moisture build up, and they offer extra protection against pathogens.

Nose Bridge Wire

Not all sports masks have adjustable nose bridge wires, but the ones that do are best for athletes who wear glasses. A nose bridge wire can keep your mask from sliding off and keep your sunglasses or eyeglass lenses from fogging.

UPF Protection

If you’re planning on playing outdoor sports or doing outdoor cardio, you might want to consider a face mask with UPF protection. It’s not an essential feature, but definitely something to consider—especially during the summer time.

Below are 5 face masks that are excellent for gym goers and athletes. They all have unique features, and they all get the job done when it comes to keeping you safe from air borne pathogens.

FluShields N95 Reusable Sports Face Mask

N95 Reusable Sports Mask

The N95 reusable sports [face] mask by FluShields contains (2) PM2.5 filters which filter tiny particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers in diameter—about 3% the diameter of a human hair. These are great masks for sports and recreation—providing extra protection while allowing you to breathe comfortably throughout your workout.

  • PM2.5 Filters
  • Moisture Valves Prevent Moisture Build-Up In Mask
  • Adjustable Nose Guard And Strap

HaloLife Black Mesh Sport Mask

HALOLIFE is perhaps one of the best masks on the market right now due to their trademarked nanofilter technology.

The masks also contain moisture wicking bamboo lining which greatly reduces condensation—great for working in a hot environment or lifting weights in the gym.

Their masks are available in sizes small to extra large and HALOLIFE is currently running a sale which consists of getting a free mask when you buy 2.

Under Armour Sports Face Mask

Under Armour

The Under Armour Sports face mask provides 3 layers of protection and molds to your face—making this a great performance mask. The first layer is light with air pockets to create structure, so it can stay off your mouth and nose for better airflow. The breathable middle layer lets air through but makes it hard for moisture and sweat to pass. And the third layer contains a stretchy Iso-Chill fabric which actually feels cool against your skin.

  • Made with high-performance UA materials, designed to be worn all day & when playing sports.
  • Structured design sits up off the face & lips for added comfort & airflow
  • Adjustable nose bridge
  • UPF 50 Protection

Reebok Breathable Sport Mask

The Reebok face mask is a 2-layer mask that’s designed for sports and workouts. It’s soft, it’s breathable, and it doesn’t suck in as bad as most other cloth face masks. It also doesn’t get heavy and weighed down when wet.

This mask does its job at preventing droplet transmission, but it’s not as protective as an N95. These masks also run small (even for a large), and may be a little tight for people with beards or larger than average faces because the ear loops are not adjustable. It also does not have an adjustable nose wire.

Best Sustainable Cloth Face Mask Brands

Eco-Friendly Reusable Face Mask Brands That Are Made From Sustainable Fabric For Your Environmentally Conscious Lifestyle

With the Delta variant spreading rapidly across the country, society is once again scrambling to buy face masks—and we at Eco Mom Diaries highly recommend buying a reusable mask.

Single-use face masks are made from synthetic plastic material which aren’t biodegradable—so we highly recommend brands that make sustainable and reusable face masks that are both kind to the environment and your health.

What Makes Face Masks Sustainable?

“Sustainable” face masks are masks made from fabric that’s environmentally friendly and ethically made.

I really love face masks made from hemp— because hemp is both antifungal, antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and grows in abundance—it’s basically a biological regenerative ecosystem.

Other types of ‘sustainable’ face masks are made from fabric like organic cotton, which uses 91 percent less water than regular cotton and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

And then there are reusable cloth masks made from bamboo fiber—which is ultra soft, anti-bacterial, moisture wicking and a sustainable material.

Eco-friendly face mask brands also strive to make the world a better place—literally. A lot of these companies do charity work which consists of planting trees, cleaning up trash or providing jobs for struggling rural communities.

Below are some of my favorite eco-friendly and sustainable cloth face mask brands that I highly recommend if you’re someone who lives an environmentally conscious lifestyle.

When you purchase these masks, not only are you buying healthy fabric for yourself, but you’re supporting a fair-wage job market that’s very much appreciated in certain poverty-stricken locations across the globe.

Best Reusable Face Masks For Kids

Breathable Face Masks For Back To School That Provide Excellent Coverage For Little Faces

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

It’s that time of year again where kids need face masks for back to school—including my own.

With the Delta variant spreading rapidly across the country, schools are requiring that children wear face masks both in school and on the bus—which ensures that they stay protected from possible exposure to Covid-19.

But, not all masks are created equal, and some are down right uncomfortable because they don’t fit properly—making them ineffective. That’s why it’s important to invest in a reusable face mask that not only has essential features recommended by the CDC, but also positive reviews by previous customers. It’s also important to go for functionality over cute aesthetics.

Essential Face Mask Features

According to the CDC, face masks should have two or more layers of breathable and washable fabric. They should snugly cover the nose and mouth leaving no gaps, and should contain a nose wire to prevent air from escaping from the top—which, if you wear eye glasses, can result in condensation forming on your lenses.

Eye Glass Wearers

The very first time that I bought my son a reusable mask, I went for “cute” instead of functional. He really wanted a Wall-E mask, so I went on Etsy and found one that he really liked. However, when it arrived and he put it on, he could barely breathe, and his glasses fogged nonstop.

Needless to say, I learned from that mistake.

And this year, I did a ton of research on face mask ‘anatomy’ and found a mask that not only fits my child’s face properly, but also doesn’t fog up his eyeglass lenses.

The reusable face mask that I initially purchased was flat, single layered, didn’t have a nose bridge wire, didn’t have a filter, and the fabric produced a lot of condensation. Children need the exact opposite—especially if they wear glasses.

The face mask that works best for my eyeglass wearing child is curved and snug with a nose bride wire and adjustable ear loops. The face mask is also made of moisture wicking fabric which produces less condensation, and contains a replaceable filter (it’s the first mask listed below by HaloLife).

Pro Mom Tip: You can also place a bandaid on top of the nose bridge for extra closure to keep air from rising if you still find that your child’s eye glasses fog even with a mask that contains a nose bridge wire. It also works to help hold a mask in place that is a little too loose.

Below are my top face mask recommendations for children based on what my son wears. These reusable masks also contain features that are recommended by the CDC and have very positive reviews.

*They may not fit toddlers and preschoolers with tiny faces*

I also recommend hand-washing (or washing on a gentle cycle) and air drying face masks, as cloth face masks tend to shrink in the dryer.
