A few years ago, the glorious shampoo bar emerged and challenged the norm of traditional haircare. The beauty industry was overflowing with plastic packaging and eventually consumers began to feel suffocated with all the BPA and artificial ingredients that did more harm than good. So little by little, female consumers began to test out solid shampoo in the form of bars—and they liked it!
Shampoo bar manufacturing thus, became a big deal. And many small companies began to create different variations of these little bars. Eventually, men too, began to see the benefits of these gems on their hair and beards and demanded their own masculine shampoo bar lines—which did indeed happen (read about the best men’s shampoos here).
But sometimes, fast manufacturing, just like fast fashion, can be a problem. Before long, many shampoo bar companies began to use ingredients that weren’t that sustainable or ethical into their bars. Some even went as far as to hide their ingredient list.
Thus, the solution to finding a great shampoo bar is to buy from a small business—whether from your local Farmer’s Market or a family owned business online. There aren’t too many, but we know of one that is really great and their products are all natural and hand-made—shampoo bars and soaps that look and smell so good, you’ll be tempted to take a bite of one!
Meet Apple Valley Soap Co— The company was purchased a few years back by a female entrepreneur whose hobby was soap making—it still is! And with the help of her family, they sell some of the most wonderful shampoo bars in the country.
Apple Valley Soap.com sells women’s, men’s, kids, and even pet shampoo bars that are incredibly gentle, aesthetically beautiful, and have fun names to match. They also disclose product ingredients under every product and even provide directions with how to use them—going above and beyond for their customers.
And they don’t just sell shampoo bars—Apple Valley Soap co also creates relaxing bath and body gift sets and beard grooming kits—in addition to luxurious body butters, candles and hemp skin care products which are all vegan.
Apple Valley Natural Soap products are also shipped in compostable, plastic free packaging and beautifully wrapped! My latest order pictured before are two half size bars which are Pink Lemonade (for my daughter) and The Cowboy Bar (for my son).
Let me quickly tell you—both of my kids love the scent of these shampoo bars! My daughter said “wow, this bar smells like pink Starburst candy!” Also, the lather is luxurious. My daughter has long hair down to her waist and this shampoo bar leaves her hair incredibly soft and helps detangle it!
With that said, I’m going to show you a few products that Apple Valley Soap.com sells which are amazing, affordable and best of all, cruelty free!

So, you’ve recently changed up your hair care routine and switched to a shampoo bar. Or maybe you’re bar-curious and doing some research prior to making the switch from traditional shampoo. Whatever the case may be, everyone always has the same question:
“How do I store my shampoo bar?”
And that’s a very valid question, because honestly, shampoo bars can be jerks. Here’s why.
Just like a bar of soap, a wet shampoo bar will cement itself onto a flat surface—only, it’s way more difficult to pry off than regular soap. And when it’s finally removed, a good amount of it is left on the surface of your sink or shower.
So now, not only are you stuck scraping off hard chunks of soap, you’re also left with a smaller bar. It’s the equivalent of accidentally knocking over a bottle of liquid shampoo and watching it pour down the drain. What a waste.
Why is that?
There’s actually a very simple explanation for that. You see, shampoo bars consist mostly of “fatty” oils and butters (like shea, coconut, castor and other varieties). Those natural oils are what make shampoo bars work so well to nourish and moisturize the scalp and hair.
Most are also full of essential oils for added scent. And when these ingredients become wet and are then made to dry against a flat surface, the oils and butters create a slimy layer, solidify, and adhere to surfaces. When this happens, your shampoo bar can’t get proper ventilation, will hoard bacteria, and overtime, go rancid.
That’s why it’s so important to store your soap and shampoo bars properly.
Shampoo bars come in all shapes and sizes, but no matter if they’re a circle, square or heart, they’re mostly created flat—without curves like some soaps tend to have. Hence, when looking for a tray or bar holder, you need to consider both the material and the design.
For example, you don’t want to get something that’s equally flat with no drainage. That’s just as bad as laying your shampoo bar on the sink. Look for a soap dish design that has spaces in between, allowing air to reach and ventilate the surface of your bar. It will also help drain excess liquid.
It’s also a good idea to get something sustainable—like wood/bamboo, ceramic or stainless steel. They’ll last longer, and some of these will biodegrade over time if you throw them out. But if you’re more into aesthetics and you find a great plastic soap dish that’s recyclable, and will last a very long time, that’s fine too.
Need recommendations? Below are soap trays and holders (both masculine and feminine) that we highly recommend to maximize the lifespan of your shampoo bar. They’re innovative, durable and have solid reviews.
LeleCAT Leaf Shaped Soap Holder
These unique and aesthetically pleasing leaf shaped soap holders by LeleCAT are great for shampoo bars because they provide excellent ventilation and drainage. They specialize in shampoo bars, beard grooming kits, and in-shower accessories like this innovative wooden magnetic soap bar holder, made of sustainable beach wood. The adhesive sticks to almost any surface and it’s an awesome way to keep your soap and shampoo bars dry.
The Bossman brand is one of the top men’s shampoo bar brands on the market; in fact, it was featured in our “top 3 most sought after shampoo bars” article. And their shampoo bar accessories are just as top-notch. The Bossman soap tray has a lot of great features. It has a ceramic base and bamboo insert, which comes out so you can easily clean it. This soap tray also contains grooves that allow your soap bar to properly drain and ventilate.
This innovative and sleek looking soap dish by ENDOTO is an ideal holder for shampoo bars because it allows your bar to drain immediately. It’s made of very durable ABS plastic and will last a very long time. It’s great to have in the shower or sink area and currently comes in a pack of two for under $10. That’s a really awesome deal.
This soap dish by Hemlock Park is 100% compostable. The base of this tray is made from bamboo and corn fibers while the removable tray is made from bamboo. We like this soap tray because of the wide gaps that allow ventilation, and because they’re easy to wipe down (even soap trays need a good wash once in a while). And currently, if you buy two trays, Amazon automatically gives you 10% off. Not sure how long this promotion will last, but it’s a good deal.
If you need your soap or shampoo bar in a more convenient spot in your shower, check out iPEGTOP suction cup soap dish. This soap tray is made from 304 stainless steel and will not rust (beware, there are counterfeits which will rust—this link and brand is solid). The suction cup on this soap dish creates a strong vacuum seal and allows you to have your soap within arm’s reach.
If you’re a simple person and a bit of a minimalist, you need a simple soap dish. And these rustic looking soap trays by Magift are really functional and do a really good job of drying your bar of soap. The strip design allows water to easily drain, allowing your soap or shampoo bar to dry quickly and stay that way. It’s made of pine wood and is really easy to clean.
Non-Toxic And Plastic Free Shampoo Bars For Little Heads!
This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission. This post also contains a product review, but the fair opinion is all mine.
I absolutely LOVE shampoo bars! They are so so great for the environment, save tons of space in my shower, and are so gentle on my scalp and hair!
Unlike traditional shampoo, shampoo bars are biodegradable, are not packaged in plastic, and are vegan as well as cruelty free. They also don’t contain any harsh synthetic chemicals or parabens that traditional shampoo contains.
When they first became a “thing”, they were mostly targeted toward women. Then our male counterparts got jealous and demanded they have some made especially for them. Now, it’s our kids’ turn!
Shampoo bars for kids are slowly emerging. And I hope that more companies help keep this trend going when it comes to our kids because it’s such a safer and healthier alternative—not to mention more eco-friendly. I myself am switching over to shampoo bars when it comes to our kids.
Our kids deserve the best! When you think about it, what we put on their skin matters—and synthetic chemicals are not that great for their skin; especially if your little one sufffers from eczema, acne, sensitive skin and other issues.
And I’m sure that if you’re just like me, you hate having your bathtub cluttered with tons of bottles. Oh, that’s another great thing about switching to a shampoo bar for your little ones: they can double as a body wash, saving you space and money! Just make sure to dry them properly to keep them from getting gooey!
With that said, I did some research and found several brands that cater specifically to kids when it comes to organic shampoo bars. Each one is climate pledge friendly and contain organic ingredients that are vegan, natural and plant based. And as with all shampoo bars (depending on hair length) these can last up to 2 months!
Would you like to see how shampoo bars work? They truly do lather so easily. Below is a video of me trying out a shampoo bar sample by J•R•Liggett’s onto my 7 year old son’s hair.
The bar itself smelled amazing like subtle coconut, and it produced a generous lather as soon as I wet it and rubbed it lightly into my son’s hair. His hair was so soft afterwards! The bar is all natural and doesn’t leave any greasy residue.

E’TAE SHAMPOO BAR
The E’Tae Shampoo Bar is gentle enough to be used on infants because it has a tear-free formula and produces low to medium lather. It protects the hair’s natural oils while removing dirt and parents have given this bar pretty good reviews.
Shampoo bars are becoming increasingly popular, which is great! Women everywhere are ditching traditional shampoos and opting for zero-waste alternatives. They’re eco-friendly, they’re cute, they smell like flowers and gumdrops and unicorns—and some even have glitter and tiny chunks of flower petals. They’re the perfect zero-waste hair care product for women!
BUT WHAT ABOUT MEN?
Men don’t want to smell like vanilla cupcakes or unicorn farts! They can’t have sparkles and flower petals lingering on their sideburns. Their bro friends will never let them hear the end of it. But, they do want in on the zero-waste hair care movement—as long as the products have a masculine scent.
Men deserve to have environmentally-friendly eco-manes just like women. And they can—because men’s grooming products now include shampoo bars.
That’s why we’ve done some research, visited a bunch of manufacturer websites, and chose some of the most ethical hair care brands that make shampoo bars made specifically for men in mind with scents like pine and tar and beer, ….you get where we’re going with this.
We’re talking natural, organic and vegan ingredients, zero animal testing, and plastic free packaging. Plus, some of these companies do pretty rad philanthropic work, which is pretty darn awesome, in our book.
Why Should You Switch To Shampoo Bars?
Traditional shampoos are packaged in plastic bottles, and if you take into account one bottle per person, that’s millions of shampoo bottles laying around in your local landfill…indefinitely. Why? Because as you all know, plastic doesn’t biodegrade.
Shampoo bars, however, are made with plastic-free packaging. In fact, most aren’t even shipped to your house in plastic. What they do get shipped in, is recyclable and biodegradable packaging that you can feel warm and gooey about; because you’re helping the planet.
They are also void of harsh chemicals and ingredients that strip your hair of its natural oils. In fact, when switching to an all natural shampoo bar, you may notice that your hair is not as dry as it normally would be after using traditional shampoo. For many people, this may take getting used to.
Shampoo bars are also suitable for beards and body. That’s right! Whereas traditional shampoo is limited to just the hair on your scalp, shampoo bars can be used for much, much more! In fact, men LOVE the new appearance and texture of their facial hair—stating that “frizz” is down by a considerable percent.
Are shampoo bars Convenient foR travel?
Because shampoo bars are solid, compact, and friendly on the environment, they are excellent for travel and outdoor recreation such as camping. You can easily keep them in a soap bar travel container and not worry about spills or airport security telling you that the bottle you’re bringing on board with you is way to big. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a shampoo bottle going rogue and spilling all your carry-on, and you certainly don’t have to spend extra money buying a whole new shampoo bottle on your trip.
How Do Shampoo Bars Work?
Shampoo bars work just like regular soap bars. You create a lather, and smear it into your wet hair (and beard). Then you just wash as you would with conventional shampoo. In fact, here’s a video tutorial that I did on my son with J•R•Liggett’s Shampoo Bar (they are so nice and sent samples!) I applied the bar to his wet hair and it started to create a rich lather immediately! Then once we rinsed it out, his hair was soft and no greasy residue remained. That’s why shampoo bars are so great to use.
Are you Ready to try one Out?
Then let’s go check them out! Try it, and if you like it, make the switch for good! If not, then go back to what you used before. No harm done in trying something new.
Most bars will save you money because they last as long as 2-3 bottles of shampoo—provided you store them correctly. With that said, keep them on a dish soap (one with holes) so they can dry and prevent them from turning to goo. For recommendations on soap trays that are best suited for shampoo bars, check out our article called “How To Store Shampoo Bars And Soap”.
All the shampoo bars chosen below are Climate Pledge Friendly, which is a sustainability certification. They’re also cruelty free and never tested on animals, just probably on bad employees.
