I have to be honest, when it comes to natural deodorants, I didn’t even know that there was such a thing until I stumbled upon an article about them late last year, which listed all the important reasons regarding why you should make the switch from traditional deodorants; one of which was the fact that traditional deodorant contains aluminum, parabens, and other chemicals that can cause some serious damage to your health in the long run (potential breast cancer being one of them).
Following the article I decided that I would invest in one and see how it would work out for me. So I purchased one at my local grocery store. I went straight to the deodorant section and stared at all the “natural” options—and I was overwhelmed. There were so many. And many of them were over $10. But, ultimately I chose one called “Beauty and Planet”, and I chose it for several reasons.
For starters, it was one of the cheaper ones on the shelf (just a little over $6). It also stated that the packaging was 100% recyclable. And the third reason that I chose this particular brand was the scent. I love the scent of subtle roses.
I decided I’d try it on the next day and see how it goes. I was curious to see if the hype regarding natural deodorants would live up to the expectation.
The day I used it, I felt sticky all day long. My arm pits literally sweat non stop, and I felt like I was in high school all over again. I was like “this isn’t going to work”. The next day, I gave it another shot.
Nope. Not happening. “I am not going out in public smelling like this”, I told myself.
So I stopped. In fact, I ranted about it on my fb page and how stupid and in effective natural deodorants were. And then a friend cyber-slapped me with a dose of reality that made me have an “aha” moment.
“These are DEODERANTS, she typed with all caps—NOT ANTIPERSPIRANTS; you’re going to sweat because your body is detoxing”.
And she was absolutely right.
I was sweating because natural deodorants don’t stop you from perspiring. The only reason you don’t sweat with an antiperspirant is because the ingredients in them block your pores to prevent you from sweating—ingredients that natural deodorants don’t have.
So, after absorbing that bit of information and realizing the purpose of a deodorant, I decided to give it another try, and used it for a full 30 days (spoiler alert—I am still using it).
What happened in those 30 days? I sweat a lot and stunk like a teenage boy. But the smell gradually went away as my body purged itself of all those synthetic chemicals. It actually felt kind of liberating. And nothing that multiple showers a day couldn’t fix. But honestly, it felt great. And for someone who has breasts, I’m a little less worried about my health.
Am I still sweating? Absolutely. But, not even close to the extent that I was in the very beginning.
If you’re considering using a natural deodorant, I say go for it. Pick one with a scent that you like and just don’t give up on it. Use it for at least a full 30 days and then decide if you want to continue or throw in the towel.
