At the end of each day, my kids enjoy a nice warm bath—mainly because they get to play with their favorite bath toys. And mom gets to ask them questions about their day while getting to relax and sit for a while—even if it’s on the toilet lid.
But, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that I started to swap out plastic bath toys for safer alternatives, so don’t feel bad if you’ve just started doing the same. If it makes you feel better, my kids use to have McDonald’s Happy Meal toys floating around in their bath water for the longest time.
Then one day I read about plastic bath toys and how they leached chemicals in hot water and I decided to throw all of them out. With that said, I started to slowly incorporate plastic alternatives that are much safer.
Why Should I Avoid Plastic Bath Toys?
Plastic bath toys can be dangerous for several reasons:
A majority of plastic bath toys are made from PVC and contain some really unhealthy hormone disrupting chemicals that aren’t safe for anyone—let alone babies and young children. These chemicals can be toxic and can cause a range of health issues, particularly in young children whose bodies are still developing.
When these plastic toys make contact with hot water, they start to leach chemicals like cadmium, lead and pthalates, which young children absorb via skin. Teething babies and young toddlers also have a tendency to chew their toys, so these chemicals also get absorbed via the mouth.
Plastic bath toys can also become a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and other microorganisms, which can cause skin irritation and other health issues. If not cleaned regularly, bacteria can build up on the surface and internal hollow portion of the toys, making them unsafe for children to play with.
For these reasons, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers of plastic bath toys, and to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of children by swapping them out for eco-friendly, non toxic alternatives.

When shopping for bath toys, there are several important things to consider:
- Avoid toys that contain PVC, Pthalates and BPA (look for the recycling symbol #3 and you’ll know it’s PVC).
- Choose eco-friendly toys made from natural rubber, food-grade silicone, stainless steel or wood.
- Choose toys with sealed holes to prevent the accumulation of stagnant water and saliva which results in mold.
