Best Mineral Sunscreens For Babies And Kids | 2023 Edition

The Best Mineral Sunscreen Lotions For Babies And Kids With Sensitive Skin!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

As a mom of two young kids living in Northwest Florida, I can’t tell you how many sunscreens I’ve tried out until I found a couple of brands that safely work with my kids’ sensitive skin.

When we first moved to the area five years ago, I made a naive mistake of purchasing a chemical sunscreen by a popular brand, and it made my son’s skin break out in a terrible rash. I felt horrible.

That mistake made me “wake up” and start making wiser, more mindful decisions when it came to skincare products for my entire family—particularly sun protection—and mineral sunscreen has become part of our everyday skincare routine.

What Is The Difference Between Mineral And Chemical Sunscreen?

Chemical and mineral sunscreens are two of the most popular types of sunscreen available in stores today. Both offer excellent protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, but there are some key differences between the two that should be taken into consideration when choosing a sunscreen—especially for young children.

Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat, which is then released from the skin. These sunscreens typically contain a combination of active ingredients such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, and octocrylene.

While they are very effective at blocking UV rays, some people may experience skin irritation or sensitivity to these ingredients, just like my son did at the time.

Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, contain physical blockers such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients work by reflecting and scattering UV rays away from the skin, rather than absorbing them.

Mineral sunscreens are generally considered to be less irritating than chemical sunscreens, and they are also more effective at blocking UVA rays, which can cause long-term skin damage.

What Are The Benefits Of Mineral Sunscreen For Kids?

Mineral sunscreen is a great option for kids, as it offers many beneficial features. As a mom who has tried both chemical and mineral sunscreen on my children, I can honestly say that these facts below are true.

  • Mineral sunscreen is made from natural minerals which are not absorbed into the skin, and therefore do not cause irritation or other skin sensitivities.
  • Mineral sunscreen is water-resistant, so it will stay on even after swimming or sweating. This is especially important for kids who are active and spend a lot of time outdoors.
  • Mineral sunscreens do not contain toxic chemicals that can have negative impacts on the endocrine system.
  • Mineral sunscreen has a more pleasant smell, and oftentimes goes on sheer, which means it’s easier to spread and makes life for moms with squirmy toddlers a lot easier.
  • Mineral sunscreen often contains natural oils, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, and sunflower seed oil, which nourish and hydrate the skin in addition to providing UV protection.
  • Mineral sunscreen lotions can be used by the whole family!

At What Age Can Children Wear Mineral Sunscreen?

Every child needs sun protection, and The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that all children wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

When it comes to age, babies as young as 6 months old can wear sunscreen, and mineral sunscreen is recommended due to their delicate skin that is susceptible to irritation and hormone disruptions.

If you have a baby that is younger than six months old, the rule of thumb is to just keep them out of the sun, and have them covered in lightweight, breathable clothing and sunglasses with UV protection.

Bamboo fabric is fabulous for babies, especially since it has natural UV protection, but it’s hard to find swimsuits made from bamboo. Primary is one of my favorite online sustainable clothing stores for purchasing bamboo clothing, and they have a really fun swimsuit collection for babies and kids.

With that said, below are my favorite mineral sunscreens that I have personally used on my two children, and I highly recommend them for anyone with kids that have sensitive skin, eczema or keratosis pilaris (like one of my children).

These mineral sunscreen lotions are also all hypoallergenic as well as vegan, cruelty-free, and reef safe. In other words, they’re safe for your little ones and the planet.

Best Mineral Sunscreen For Kids With Sensitive Skin

Evereden spf

Evereden Mineral Sunscreen Lotions

Evereden has two amazing mineral sunscreen lotions and I own the SPF 50. Both are made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and this is by far the best sunscreen lotion that my kids and I have ever worn. It is so sheer and smells so lovely, that we don’t even feel like we are wearing it.

When I first got this lotion in the mail, I tested it out on my son’s arm since he is the most sensitive out of all of us, and it indeed proved to be hypoallergenic. Now his skin is fine after having it on all day long, and he is always protected from the hot Florida sun without breaking out in hives.

Both can be used on babies as young as 6 months old, and when you purchase these directly on the Evereden website, you can get 15% off on your first purchase when you sign up for their newsletter.

Features

  • 100% Mineral Non-Nano UV Filters
  • Serum-like fluid texture that absorbs quickly without a white-cast
  • Time-release technology for all-day, vitamin e-rich hydration
  • Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB and Blue Light Protection
  • Water & Sweat Resistant
  • Non-comedogenic/ Suitable for face and body
  • Must be reapplied every 40 minutes

Hello Bello Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

Hello Bello is a mineral sunscreen lotion made with zinc oxide that my kids and I absolutely love using, and it was the first mineral sunscreen that I ever purchased. It is a great alternative to chemical sunscreens, is easy to apply, and in my opinion has a lovely subtle citrus like scent.

It provides excellent protection from the sun’s harmful rays, and the lotion is lightweight and non-greasy, making it perfect for everyday use. It’s not as sheer as EverEden (above), but is still a great sunscreen to have on hand—I’ve been very pleased with it.

Features

  • Lightweight and non-greasy formula
  • Made with non-nano zinc oxide
  • Made without synthetic fragrance, phthalates, parabens, oxybenzone and octinoxate
  • Reef friendly
  • Up to 80 minutes of active protection

Think Baby Sunscreen

Think Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

ThinkBaby is an excellent mineral sunscreen lotion made with zinc oxide that is specifically designed for kids, and I used it on my daughter when she was a baby a few years ago. It is made with natural and organic ingredients, and is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

With its non-greasy, lightweight formula, ThinkBaby is easy to apply and won’t leave your kids feeling sticky or uncomfortable. It is definitely a great choice for parents looking for an affordable, safe and effective sunscreen for their children—especially babies.

Features

  • Organic and mineral based with Zinc Oxide
  • Non-greasy and goes on easily
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Biodegradable and reef-friendly
  • Up to 80 minutes of active protection
  • Comes in a tube made of environmentally friendly packaging that does not contain BPA, vinyl, or phthalates

Earth Mama Uber-Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen Lotion

I love the Earth Mama brand—especially their uber-sensitive sunscreen lotion made with non-nano zinc and calming organic colloidal oatmeal. If your child suffers from eczema, this little gem is perfect for their “uber” sensitive skin. It’s a little thicker than other sunscreen lotions, but totally worth it.

This is a fantastic sunscreen that is super gentle on sensitive skin, and provides excellent protection from the sun’s harmful rays. I love that it is made with natural and organic ingredients that are safe for children’s skin and the environment.

Features

  • Made with organic colloidal oatmeal and organic Shea butter
  • Reef friendly: made with non-nano zinc
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Protection
  • Water Resistant
  • Up to 40 minutes of active protection

Babo

Babo Botanicals Baby Skin Mineral Sunscreen

The Babo Botanicals mineral sunscreen lotion for babies and kids is made with zinc oxide and 24 plant-based ingredients including nourishing shea butter. It goes on smoothly and has zero fragrance—perfect for sensitive noises who prefer unscented lotions.

Babo botanicals is gentle on baby’s skin, and provides protection against UVA and UVB rays. It is also water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, making it a great choice for those who are spending time outdoors.

Features

  • Formulated with zinc oxide and moisturizing sunflower oil

  • Active for up to 80 minutes
  • Made with 24 plant-based ingredients, including the brand’s certified organic Nutri-Soothe™ Herbal Blend

Best Sustainable Smartphone For Kids: Teracube Thrive

The First Sustainable And Safe Smart Phone For Kids That’s EASY For Parents To Set Up And Monitor Remotely

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Is your child ready for a smartphone? It is a big decision for any parent to make, and there are many factors to consider.

Before making the decision, it is important to think about your child’s maturity level, how responsible they are, and how much access to the internet they should have.

Additionally, it is important to discuss the potential consequences of owning a smartphone, such as cyberbullying, online predators, and the potential for addiction.

By the time you consider all these factors, you can make an informed decision about whether or not your child is ready for a smartphone.

But wait!! What if your child had a smartphone that prevented cyberbullying, allowed you to set healthy screen limits, AND it didn’t require difficult setup?

What if this smartphone already came pre-programmed with safety settings so that even the most tech-illiterate parent could feel confident about their child’s use and safety?

Well, this type of phone DOES exist, and it allows you to set up and monitor everything from the convenience of your phone with an easy to use app.

Reasons To Consider Getting Your Child A Phone (Based On Personal Experience As A Mom)

There are many benefits to allowing your child to have a smart phone, and they don’t involve social media. For example, kids can access educational apps to supplement their learning, stay organized with reminders and to-do lists, and play [timed] apps/ games as rewards.

I recently got my 9 year old son his own kid-friendly smartphone, and I did so for the following reasons:

  • I had already been letting him use an old IPhone of mine and he was able to play games on it during outings where it got a little boring (like in a waiting room at his doctor’s appt, or long drives, etc).
  • Regular phones cannot be configured to be 100% safe, and kids can still browse whatever they want, access certain free apps and you can’t set screen timers that automatically shut off an app or internet site.
  • Smartphones are no different than an iPad, and they’re more portable (I am able to carry it around in my purse and can hand it to him during certain times (mentioned above).
  • When we go on vacations or to the local beach, he is able to take his own photos, and I love seeing how creative he gets with photography.
  • When he gets older and is able to walk home from school on his own, I’ll be able to stay in touch with him and track his location.
  • He is able to use his smartphone as an alarm clock to wake himself up for school which helps foster responsibility.

Which Smartphone Is Best For Kids?

There are a few really great smartphones for kids on the market, but there is one that really stands out, and it’s the Teracube Thrive sustainable smartphone for kids.

The Teracube Thrive is a tailor-made smartphone for kids ages 8-17, and has an easy 2-minute setup that can be done remotely from mom’s phone. So even if you and your child are apart, you can still set timers, approve apps, and monitor your child’s activities in real time.

The Teracube Thrive is also a sustainable choice because it is designed to last a lifetime. It is made with a blend of recycled and quality materials that are built to last, and periodic updates mean that you don’t have to keep spending money on upgrades (in other words, this smartphone grows with your child).

What’s Included With The Phone?

  • Teracube Thrive smartphone
  • USB-C charging cable
  • Protective case
  • Tempered glass screen protector (pre-installed)
  • Teracube Wireless SIM card (pre-installed)
  • Quick start guide

How Much Does Teracube Thrive Cost?

If you’re considering buying the Teracube Thrive smartphone for kids, you can purchase just the phone for $199 (and use your own network), OR you can purchase the smartphone along with the Teracube wireless plan which is powered by T-Mobile and save $50, as this knocks the price down to $150.

If you choose the phone along with the T-Mobile plan, the network fee is only $14.99 per month (other phones like Gab, charge around $29.99)—So this is actually quite affordable.

Is this a good deal overall? Well, considering that certain smartphones cost over $1k, this is literally a steal—especially since it lasts a lifetime and comes with a lifetime warranty. You can also have a cracked screen repaired for a flat fee of $45 (free repairs for technical and physical malfunctions on their part).

Features of the T-Mobile Bundle

  • Nationwide coverage – powered by T-Mobile
  • Unlimited talk & text plans starting at $14.99 / mo
  • 1st month free  (Bonus)
  • Forever Premium Warranty  (Bonus)
  • No contracts. Cancel anytime!

Why Is The Teracube Thrive Better Than Other Kid-Friendly Smartphones?

In my opinion, the Teracube Thrive beats the competition because it’s more affordable than other phones, it’s extremely user friendly, it saves you money in the long run, and it’s great for the environment because it lasts a lifetime, and is made with recycled parts.

So if you’re looking for a safe smartphone that also allows you to lower your carbon footprint, this is it.

I also love this smartphone because if you have a difficult or willful child, this phone provides a great opportunity for them to learn how to compromise and practice patience.

They can still view certain apps or websites with a healthy limit, and you, the parent, does not look like the bad guy. In other words, no more having to scream “GET OFF YOUR PHONE!”

This smartphone also makes a great transitional object to adulthood when it comes to tweens and teens. According to Katie Davis, author of Technology’s Child, “the phone is a way for parents to give their children some autonomy in their physical movements, while keeping close track of those movements”.

By the way, if you are indeed a parent who is technology-illiterate and need a good book on understanding technology’s role in the ages and stages of growing up, I highly recommend Katie’s book, Technology’s Child. This book dives into cyberbullying, understanding smartphones, video games and more.

So if you’re ready to purchase a safe smartphone for your child, tween or teen, I highly recommend that you consider the Teracube Thrive. This smartphone is available directly on the Teracube website, as well as Amazon.

8 Best Natural Rubber Pacifiers For Babies

The Best Organic Pacifiers For Breastfed And Formula Fed Babies

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a small commission.

Babies are born with a strong sucking reflex, and can oftentimes be seen on an ultrasound sucking their thumb while in the womb as a soothing mechanism.

Pacifiers can likewise be a great tool for comforting babies. They help babies to self-soothe, fall asleep, and also help to calm babies down during stressful situations, such as doctor visits or long car rides.

Pacifiers also help to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Researchers have found that babies who use pacifiers at nap and bedtime are less likely to die from SIDS.

With that said, there are a ton of pacifier brands available for babies, and parents have the option of choosing between silicone, latex and organic rubber. However, choosing one isn’t as easy as you might think—especially if you’re a first time parent.

Although most latex and silicone pacifiers are safe to use and free from hormone disrupting chemicals such as BPA, the safest pacifier for babies will always be made from organic rubber.

What Are The Benefits Of Natural Rubber Pacifiers?

Organic rubber pacifiers offer a number of benefits to both parents and their new babies:

  • Natural rubber is hypoallergenic and free from any chemical or synthetic additives, making them safer for babies to use.
  • Unlike other pacifiers, natural rubber pacifiers mimic the shape and softness of a mother’s breast. This flexible and stretchy material creates an easy back-and-forth transition for a breastfed baby.
  • Natural rubber pacifiers are also eco-friendly, sustainable, biodegradable, and are made with minimal ingredients.

How To Sterilize A Natural Rubber Pacifier

Natural rubber pacifiers need to be sterilized like any other pacifier. However, because they are made from natural material, it is best to boil them just once (before initial use) to prevent damage from the high heat.

Future sterilization requires that you put the pacifiers in a bowl, and simply pour boiling water over them. This scalding method is a gentle yet thorough way to kill germs and bacteria without damaging your natural rubber pacifiers.

  • Put the pacifiers in a clean bowl
  • Pour them with boiling water
  • Let the pacifiers soak for approx. 5 min.
  • Pick them up and let them dry

How Often Should I Replace A Natural Rubber Pacifier?

Since natural rubber pacifiers don’t last as long as their silicone competitor, you will need to change your baby’s pacifier every 4-8 weeks.

The nipples of natural rubber pacifiers will eventually expand, change shape and even turn gooey, so it’s very important to have another one on hand, and switch it out as soon as you see this type of wear.

With that said, below are 8 recommended natural rubber pacifiers that are available in different shapes and sizes, as it’s important to always choose an age-appropriate size to prevent your baby from choking. Hence, as your baby grows, you’ll need to upgrade the size of their pacifier (typically around 3 and 6 months).

The Best Cloth Diaper Brands For Babies

A Complete Guide To Cloth Diapers, And The Best Brands!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Aside from being totally adorable and wallet-friendly, cloth diapers can be very intimidating for many curious parents who are considering switching over from disposables.

After all, there are about 8 different cloth diaper styles on the market right now (possibly more), and each design has a different fit. So how do you know which cloth diaper will work best for your baby?

First, let’s go over all the different styles of cloth diapers that are available to you.

What Are The Different Styles Of Cloth Diapers?

Flat Diapers

Flat diapers predate all diapers. They are a single layer of cloth (typically cotton or bamboo), and they need to be folded into multiple layers for absorbency. They are economical, but the downside to flat diapers is that they can leak without a cover, and they require safety pins to secure them in place.

Pre-Fold Diapers

Prefold diapers are rectangular pieces of cloth with multiple layers of fabric for absorption, and can be used inside pocket diapers or reusable covers. Prefolds are economical, versatile, flexible and easy to wash. However, they can be bulky, inconvenient, and must be upgraded in size as baby grows.

Fitted Cloth Diapers

Fitted cloth diapers resemble a disposable diaper in that they have an hourglass shape, leg elastics to keep messes contained, and they are easy to fasten. The downside to fitted cloth diapers is that they are not waterproof, and you need to purchase covers; they are also more expensive than prefold diapers.

Pocket Diapers

Pocket diapers are cloth diapers that contain a waterproof cover and inner pocket that can be stuffed with absorbency layers—like prefolds or inserts. They can grow with your baby and come in really cute designs. The downside to pocket diapers is that they can leak, they tend to be bulky, and stuffing/removing inserts can be inconvenient.

All-In-One Diapers (AIO)

All-In-One diapers have a simple design with a trim fit that prevents leaks, and they are made with several absorbency layers along with a waterproof outer shell. They are considered the most convenient reusable diapers for daycares, and can be used throughout the potty training stage as well. The downside to All-In-One diapers is that they are expensive and take longer to dry.

All-In-2 Diapers (AI2)

All-In-2 cloth diapers are very similar to pocket diapers. They contain a waterproof outer shell, but the inserts snap inside of the diaper instead of getting placed inside of a pocket. Parents love these reusable diapers because most of the time (unless there’s a blow out, you only need to swap out the insert.

Hybrid Cloth Diapers

Hybrids are a cross between disposable and cloth diapers. They have a flexible design, a waterproof shell, and can use any absorbency layer (cloth or disposable). These cloth diapers are also cost-effective, daycare friendly, and travel-friendly. The downside to hybrid cloth diapers is that some designs can leak, and beginners might find them a bit complicating.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Cloth Diapers

  • Cloth diapers are reusable, which means that while you may fork up a descent amount of money in the beginning, you’ll actually end up saving money in the long run. Depending on the brand, the average household spends between $600-$900 a year on disposable diapers—and you’ll keep spending this amount yearly until they are potty trained.
  • Cloth diapers are hypoallergenic and don’t cause skin issues such as chemical burns, rashes or dermatitis. A majority of disposable diapers are packed full of toxic chemicals (including fragrance) that are actually harmful to your baby and their sensitive skin. Cloth diapers are breathable and lined with gentle and non-toxic fabric such as cotton, hemp, and bamboo.
  • While they do use up much more water due to laundering, cloth diapers are zero-waste because they do not need to be discarded like disposable diapers, and can be reused for many years if cared for properly.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?

The amount of cloth diapers that you will need depends on the age of your baby and how often you plan on doing laundry. However, many cloth diaper brands recommend about:

  • 24-26 diapers for a newborn
  • 20-22 diapers for a 3-12 month old
  • 16-18 diapers for a 12-24 month old
  • 12-14 for an older toddler who is potty training

But, because of the overwhelming number of diaper changes in the newborn stage, many parents postpone switching over to cloth diapers until their baby is around 4-6 months old—and that’s understandable.

Do Daycare Centers Allow Cloth Diapers?

When it comes to cloth diapers and childcare facilities, each daycare center is different. Most daycare centers in the United States allow cloth diapers, and there aren’t any state or federal rules that prohibit daycares from allowing cloth diapers.

When it comes to diaper style, if your little one is attending daycare and the facility does indeed allow cloth diapers, then the all-in-one style is the easiest reusable style for daycare workers to manage (they won’t need to struggle with inserts and diaper changes will be quick and easy).

What Type Of Cloth Diaper Is Best Overall?

I will recommend, however, that it’s best to choose brands that strive to make their cloth diapers as non-toxic, eco-friendly and hypoallergenic as possible—because babies have sensitive skin.

Cloth diapers are like infant formula—not all brands will work for your baby and you’ll most likely need to try a few different styles before you find one that works best.

With that said, below are our favorite cloth diaper brands. And if you’d like some advice on how to wash cloth diapers, check out the video below by Farmhouse On Boone.

10 Best Non-Toxic And Eco-Friendly Baby Cribs

Shopping For A Non-Toxic Baby Crib? Read On To See Which Crib Brands Focus On Safety And Sustainability

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

If you’re shopping for a sustainable baby crib that’s made with natural wood and non-toxic finishes and adhesives, you’ve come to the right place!

Babies deserve a safe and healthy sleep environment, and because they’ll be spending a good amount of time in their nursery, it’s important for parents to consider non-toxic furniture—especially when it comes to cribs.

That’s because new furniture can off-gas harmful cancer-causing chemicals and formaldehyde for years—yes, even baby furniture (a lot of baby furniture is made with formaldehyde).

Thankfully, parents are becoming more mindful when shopping for nursery furniture—because they know that eco-friendly furniture is made with non-toxic chemicals, and will contribute to cleaner air quality within the home.

Seasoned parents also know that when babies start to go through the teething process, they will eventually start to mouth and chew on crib rails—so it’s crucial to choose a crib that contains natural wood and a non-toxic finish to prevent toxins from entering their little one’s body.

Why Choose An Eco-Friendly Crib For Your Nursery?

Aside from the fact that eco-friendly cribs are non-toxic and contribute to better air quality in your child’s bedroom, eco friendly cribs are also sustainably sourced and responsibly manufactured.

The non-toxic cribs recommended within this article are all natural wood, and made from sustainably sourced New Zealand Pine, which is one of the most sustainable and renewable wood resources in New Zealand, and other sustainably harvested wood such as beechwood, walnut and more.

What Should You Look For When Shopping For A Non-Toxic Crib?

Because anyone can “greenwash” a product and claim that it’s non-toxic and eco-friendly, it’s important to look for reputable certifications which prove that a crib has indeed met, and/or, exceeded safety standards and emissions testing.

One of the best “green” certifications that a crib can have is a GREENGUARD certification. Cribs that are GREENGUARD Certified, have been tested for over 10,000 chemical emissions and volatile organic compounds. Not all cribs and nursery furniture will have this certification, but will come close (as long as they’re tested by a third party).

When it comes to product safety, it’s important that cribs meet or exceed CPSC requirements through 3rd party testing, and conduct annual testing with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA).

With that said, below are the safest sustainable cribs that are available for purchase online. And before you go, check out the video below on off-gassing.

The Best Organic Baby Wraps And Slings

Shopping For Organic Baby Slings? Read On For The Best Brands That Focus On Your Baby’s Health, Mom’s Comfort And The Planet’s Sustainable Resources

If you’re looking for an organic cloth baby carrier, you’ve come to the right place! This guide contains the best baby wraps and slings that are stylish, comfortable and sustainably made!

Are Baby Wraps And Slings Worth The Buy?

With my first child, I didn’t consider buying a wrap or ring sling because, to be honest, these cloth baby carriers looked like a lot of work.

For many first time moms who are not familiar with baby wraps, all of that tying can appear pretty intimidating, and can even create understandable fear and anxiety that your precious cargo will accidentally fall through.

However, after getting tired of lugging around a 20-30 pound car seat with me every time I went out to the grocery store, I decided to give babywearing a try—and it was one of the best “baby gear” purchases I’ve made.

What Are The Benefits Of Babywearing?

Babywearing mimics the womb, which reduces stress for your little one, allowing baby to feel calm and secure. That’s why certain styles of baby wraps are wonderful tools for skin-to-skin contact and soothing fussy babies.

Babywear also allows you to multitask by freeing up your hands! You can get things done around the house, or run errands while your baby is snuggled securely against your body. When I finally decided to wear my baby, a trip to the grocery store was much more pleasant—my wrap even had a pocket on the front where I was able to store my baby’s pacifier.

Lastly, babywear helps increase mom’s milk supply and even helps reduce baby’s spit-up after feedings because they’re resting in an upright position.

At what Age Can You Start Babywearing?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), slings and wraps are intended for infants and toddlers between 8 and 35 pounds.

Babies younger than 4 months of age are still developing neck muscles, and babywear can put your baby in a position where their breathing can become obstructed.

Hence, please take caution and always monitor your baby to make sure that they are not in a curled up position, or have their chin down when being worn in a wrap, sling or other hybrid.

Which Baby Carrier Is Best?

Baby carriers are constantly evolving, but typically range from unstructured hammock-shaped varieties to lengthy fabric that wrap around the body. There are also hybrids that offer a combined set of features.

Choosing the right baby carrier depends on baby’s age and weight. For example, a wrap was better in the first few months of my baby’s life because it was tight and allowed me to keep baby’s head more upright. It was also better for skin to skin contact.

Later on, as my baby grew and developed better head control, I was able to add a ring sling into the mix, which didn’t make me feel as sweaty during summer months. That’s because baby wraps tend to be a little thicker—trapping heat (at least that’s how it was for me).

Lastly, now a days, hybrid carriers are available which don’t require any tying or adjustment, and are the perfect fit for parents (like dads) who might feel self-conscious or intimidated to wear a fancy ring sling or over-complicated baby wrap.

Now that you’re familiar with the basics of babywearing and all of the different carrier styles, let’s look at my favorite brands that make their baby carriers in a responsible way and with non-toxic material to keep your precious one happy and healthy.

GroVia My Choice Trainers Honest Review

An Honest Review Of The Grovia MyChoice Cloth Trainers

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

My 3 year old just recently mastered potty training, but unfortunately, nighttime accidents sometimes still occur.

For a while we’ve had her in disposable nighttime diapers, but eventually I decided that investing in a few cloth diaper trainers was a better alternative.

Disposable diapers, no matter how ‘sustainable’ or ‘biodegradable’ they are, still contribute to landfill waste. Unless something is compostable and is actually placed into a compost bin with the necessary components to help break it down, it’s just going to sit on top of trash along with everything else.

Then there’s the money issue—as a society, we’re literally buying a product that we throw away the very same day. It makes much more sense to invest in a few cloth diapers to save money and reduce waste.

So after researching a bunch of different cloth diaper brands, I decided to order a few from a cloth diaper company called GroVia, who specializes in a modern and eco-friendly diapering system, and sell the Grovia My Choice trainers.

The GroVia My Choice cloth diaper trainer is similar to a pocket diaper, but differs in that it features a unique pull up design with interchangeable Side-Flex panels. It has a hidden layer of hemp/cotton blend with a pocket for adding extra absorbency and an exclusive GroCool™ lining.

First Impressions Of The GroVia My Choice Trainers

I ended up ordering 3 pairs of the GroVia My Choice Trainers—plus two additional organic cotton inserts (boosters) for extra nighttime protection.

When they arrived in the mail, my initial reaction to seeing these reusable trainers for the first time was “wow—these are really good quality training pants”.

The colors are warm and earthy, the fabric is well sewn together and soft to the touch, and they contain snap buttons in several key areas which allow for alterations as baby grows.

The GroVia cloth diaper trainers also contain an inner pocket with an absorbent layer of cotton/hemp blend, where you can add an insert for extra absorbency.

Features Of The GroVia My Choice Trainer

  • Convenient pull-up design
  • Contain a hidden layer of hemp/cotton blend for absorption
  • Contains a pocket for inserts / soaker pads
  • Waterproof outer layer and absorbent inner layer
  • Available upgrade: Interchangeable Side-Flex panels for a custom fit in a variety of stylish colors for mixing and matching (must be purchased separately)

Do The GroVia Trainers Have A Comfortable Fit?

The Grovia reusable training pants come in one size and they run small—if your child is over 25 pounds, they will be really tight around the waist, and it will be difficult for your child to pull them up. This is why GroVia sells the interchangeable Side-Flex panels, which offer a roomier fit.

That’s why you’ll also see a lot of reviews by other moms saying that these trainers have a “weird fit”, and they’re correct. But in my opinion, they’re a bit snug to prevent leaks, and so that you can use these for younger babies and adjust as baby grows.

My 3 year old is really slender (under 30 pounds) and these trainers are a bit snug. Hence, I definitely recommend purchasing at least one set of their side-flex plus panels which attach via snap buttons to the side of the trainers and comfortably expand the fit.

My daughter sleeps comfortably in these trainers with added organic inserts, and she loves that she can choose which color she wants to wear.

GroVia My Choice Trainers

Do The GroVia My Trainers Leak?

From my experience, these cloth trainers have not leaked yet. I find them to be very absorbent and the waterproof outer shell does its job. In fact, when I first got them, I ran to the sink and filled one with water, just to see how well they retain liquid without an insert—and sure enough, no water escaped through the outer shell. The absorbent hidden layer of cotton/hemp blend helps catch the liquid as well—and it gets more absorbent with every wash.

*If baby is laying sideways, pee could leak out of the sides, so for nighttime, an insert is recommended for younger babies*.

How Many Cloth Trainers Do I Need?

This all depends on how advanced your child is in their potty training. If your child is doing pretty well and only has occasional leaks, then I would recommend about 10-12 trainers—it all depends on how often you prefer to do laundry. Don’t forget that you might also need inserts. I would purchase at least 2-4 inserts to experiment with and then adjust as you go.

Personally, My daughter uses hers at nightime only, and rarely has accidents anymore, so for us, 3 cloth trainers and 2 inserts was all I needed to purchase. The GroVia trainers are also durable and excellent quality, and I will be able to hand them down to an expecting family member later down the road.

Final Thoughts On The GroVia My Choice Training Pants

The Grovia My Choice Trainers are a great way to help your little one transition from diapers to using the potty like a big kid.

Your little one is also at a stage in their life where making choices is a big deal for them! The GroVia trainers are available in many colors, so watching your child pick and choose which cloth trainer they want to wear is really fun!

The only downside to these trainers is the small fit, and may not be suitable for husky toddlers; but as mentioned above, the Side-Flex panels will generously expand the fit, and you can always return the product if it’s not the right fit for your child.

Reusable cloth training pants are environmentally friendly, non-toxic and help save money that can be better spent on other necessities.

So if you’re tired of spending money on disposable nighttime diapers and want a more sustainable way to potty train your little one, then I definitely recommend giving the Grovia My Choice Trainers a try!

Best Non-Toxic Teething Toys For Babies

Shopping For A Natural Teething Toy? Read On For The Best Non Toxic Teethers To Safely Soothe Baby’s Sore Gums

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a small commission.

Are you looking for a teething toy that’s safe for baby and environmentally friendly? You’ve come to the right place!

Teething is one of the most unpleasant experiences that both baby and mom go through together.

When a baby is teething, the gum pain can disrupt their sleep cycle, their temperature can spike, they drool excessively which can cause skin irritation, and it just makes them oh so irritable.

That’s why teething toys can be such a life saver for babies—and mom’s sanity.

However, not all teethers are safe for babies to chew on, and many conventional teethers can leach harmful chemicals that mimic estrogen—even those synthetic teethers that claim to be BPA-free.

With that said, we’ve put together a guide to non toxic teething toys that help soothe your little one’s gums safely and effectively. They are made from the following:

  • 100% organic cotton
  • Natural hard wood
  • 100% natural rubber
  • Food-grade silicone

What To Avoid When Choosing A Teething Toy

Not all teething toys are safe for babies to put into their mouths, and there are several ingredients to avoid when choosing a teether. Luckily, many natural and organic teethers do not contain these biologically harmful chemicals:

  • BPA (Bisphenol-a)
  • PVC/Vinyl
  • Phthalates
  • Latex
  • Lead
  • Cadmium

With that said, below are some of our favorite non-toxic teething toys that are void of harmful chemicals, and 100% safe for your little one’s gums.
