5 Best Natural Face Creams For Kids

Our Guide To The Top 5 Non-Toxic Facial Moisturizers For A Safe Pediatric Skincare Routine

Shopping for an all-natural face cream to go along with your child’s non toxic facial cleanser? You’ve come to the right place!

Many parents wonder if facial moisturizers are an appropriate addition to a child’s skincare routine because it’s considered by many to be an “unnecessary luxury”. However, there are many benefits to having your child use moisturizers and we’ll talk about them below.

With that said, we’ve also put together a shopping guide to the safest all-natural face creams that are made specifically for children and their delicate skin.

Why Do Kids Need Moisturizers?

A child’s night time skincare routine should include a bath with a gentle facial cleanser, followed by application of a moisturizer—and there are several benefits to incorporating this routine.

  • Children have thinner skin than adults, making it vulnerable to environmental elements. Adding a moisturizer adds a barrier.
  • Babies and young children don’t have the natural protective oils that teens and adults do, making their skin more prone to drying out and making skin conditions like eczema worse. Pediatric facial creams help add moisture and soothe dry skin.
  • Children lose moisture in their skin after washing their face, and a moisturizer is a great way to re-hydrate their skin.

Why Can’t I Just Use Lotion On My Child’s Face?

Many parents wonder if they can just use lotion on their child’s face following a bath or facial cleanser. And while you certainly can, it’s important to know the difference between the two and how each affects the skin.

  • Lotions have higher water content than face creams, which means that while they spread more easily, they also evaporate quicker.
  • Face creams are thicker and have more oil content, which means that the barrier they create stays on longer, and keep your child’s skin from drying out faster.
  • Body lotion may also contain fragrance that can irritate your child’s face, especially if they aren’t hypoallergenic.

How To Choose The Right Face Cream For Young Children

When it comes to natural face creams for adolescents, there are several important key features you should look for to make sure that the moisturizer is truly non-toxic:

  • Free of harsh chemicals such as sulfates, parabens and phthalates
  • Non-greasy formula
  • Hypoallergenic with natural fragrance or fragrance-free
  • A combination of all-natural and organic ingredients
  • Vegan and cruelty free

Now, if your child is starting puberty (usually age 8 for girls and age 9 for boys), they may start producing more facial oil on their own, and some face creams may clog pores and create acne.

In that case, it’s important to choose a cream that’s noncomedogenic—meaning it’s specifically designed to not clog pores but is still able to moisturize and hydrate the skin.

It’s also important to know that many natural face creams contain tree nuts, seeds and soy as ingredients, so if your child is allergic to any of these, please use caution (get advice from your pediatrician or do a spot test).

With that said, below are 5 of the most effective yet gentle pediatric facial moisturizers for kids that are perfect to use with their natural facial cleansers.

They’re great for all skin types, and even help with skin conditions such as adolescent acne and eczema without clogging pores.

The Best Cloth Diaper Brands For Babies

A Complete Guide To Cloth Diapers, And The Best Brands!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Aside from being totally adorable and wallet-friendly, cloth diapers can be very intimidating for many curious parents who are considering switching over from disposables.

After all, there are about 8 different cloth diaper styles on the market right now (possibly more), and each design has a different fit. So how do you know which cloth diaper will work best for your baby?

First, let’s go over all the different styles of cloth diapers that are available to you.

What Are The Different Styles Of Cloth Diapers?

Flat Diapers

Flat diapers predate all diapers. They are a single layer of cloth (typically cotton or bamboo), and they need to be folded into multiple layers for absorbency. They are economical, but the downside to flat diapers is that they can leak without a cover, and they require safety pins to secure them in place.

Pre-Fold Diapers

Prefold diapers are rectangular pieces of cloth with multiple layers of fabric for absorption, and can be used inside pocket diapers or reusable covers. Prefolds are economical, versatile, flexible and easy to wash. However, they can be bulky, inconvenient, and must be upgraded in size as baby grows.

Fitted Cloth Diapers

Fitted cloth diapers resemble a disposable diaper in that they have an hourglass shape, leg elastics to keep messes contained, and they are easy to fasten. The downside to fitted cloth diapers is that they are not waterproof, and you need to purchase covers; they are also more expensive than prefold diapers.

Pocket Diapers

Pocket diapers are cloth diapers that contain a waterproof cover and inner pocket that can be stuffed with absorbency layers—like prefolds or inserts. They can grow with your baby and come in really cute designs. The downside to pocket diapers is that they can leak, they tend to be bulky, and stuffing/removing inserts can be inconvenient.

All-In-One Diapers (AIO)

All-In-One diapers have a simple design with a trim fit that prevents leaks, and they are made with several absorbency layers along with a waterproof outer shell. They are considered the most convenient reusable diapers for daycares, and can be used throughout the potty training stage as well. The downside to All-In-One diapers is that they are expensive and take longer to dry.

All-In-2 Diapers (AI2)

All-In-2 cloth diapers are very similar to pocket diapers. They contain a waterproof outer shell, but the inserts snap inside of the diaper instead of getting placed inside of a pocket. Parents love these reusable diapers because most of the time (unless there’s a blow out, you only need to swap out the insert.

Hybrid Cloth Diapers

Hybrids are a cross between disposable and cloth diapers. They have a flexible design, a waterproof shell, and can use any absorbency layer (cloth or disposable). These cloth diapers are also cost-effective, daycare friendly, and travel-friendly. The downside to hybrid cloth diapers is that some designs can leak, and beginners might find them a bit complicating.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Cloth Diapers

  • Cloth diapers are reusable, which means that while you may fork up a descent amount of money in the beginning, you’ll actually end up saving money in the long run. Depending on the brand, the average household spends between $600-$900 a year on disposable diapers—and you’ll keep spending this amount yearly until they are potty trained.
  • Cloth diapers are hypoallergenic and don’t cause skin issues such as chemical burns, rashes or dermatitis. A majority of disposable diapers are packed full of toxic chemicals (including fragrance) that are actually harmful to your baby and their sensitive skin. Cloth diapers are breathable and lined with gentle and non-toxic fabric such as cotton, hemp, and bamboo.
  • While they do use up much more water due to laundering, cloth diapers are zero-waste because they do not need to be discarded like disposable diapers, and can be reused for many years if cared for properly.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?

The amount of cloth diapers that you will need depends on the age of your baby and how often you plan on doing laundry. However, many cloth diaper brands recommend about:

  • 24-26 diapers for a newborn
  • 20-22 diapers for a 3-12 month old
  • 16-18 diapers for a 12-24 month old
  • 12-14 for an older toddler who is potty training

But, because of the overwhelming number of diaper changes in the newborn stage, many parents postpone switching over to cloth diapers until their baby is around 4-6 months old—and that’s understandable.

Do Daycare Centers Allow Cloth Diapers?

When it comes to cloth diapers and childcare facilities, each daycare center is different. Most daycare centers in the United States allow cloth diapers, and there aren’t any state or federal rules that prohibit daycares from allowing cloth diapers.

When it comes to diaper style, if your little one is attending daycare and the facility does indeed allow cloth diapers, then the all-in-one style is the easiest reusable style for daycare workers to manage (they won’t need to struggle with inserts and diaper changes will be quick and easy).

What Type Of Cloth Diaper Is Best Overall?

I will recommend, however, that it’s best to choose brands that strive to make their cloth diapers as non-toxic, eco-friendly and hypoallergenic as possible—because babies have sensitive skin.

Cloth diapers are like infant formula—not all brands will work for your baby and you’ll most likely need to try a few different styles before you find one that works best.

With that said, below are our favorite cloth diaper brands. And if you’d like some advice on how to wash cloth diapers, check out the video below by Farmhouse On Boone.

The Best Sustainable Kids Clothing Brands

A Guide To Ethical And Eco-Friendly Children’s Clothing

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

If you’re looking for the best sustainable children’s clothing brands, you’ve come to the right place!

As a mom of two, I’ve become quite familiar with a few sustainable clothing brands that make fabulous organic and eco-friendly kids’ clothing for every type of budget.

With that said, I’ve put together a list of all my favorite sustainable children’s brands to help guide you on your quest!

What Is Sustainable Children’s Fashion?

Sustainable children’s fashion is anything that has been purchased secondhand, or made ethically, responsibly and doesn’t add to pollution.

In other words, sustainable fashion for kids has been created in a way that is mindful of environmental issues, and ensures that all workers involved are paid fair wages.

Sustainable children’s fashion is also made to last, can be re-used or re-sold, and is hypoallergenic because of the organic material that was used in making each piece of fabric.

What Eco-Friendly Fabrics Are Best For Children?

Since babies and toddlers have delicate skin, it’s best to choose eco-friendly fabric that’s as natural and organic as possible.

Baby skin is thinner than that of an adult, and children in general don’t develop that thick adult-like skin until they reach puberty. So, until they do, their delicate skin is more susceptible to a plethora of hormone disrupting chemicals that can be found in many popular clothing brands.

Natural plant-based fabric such as organic cotton, hemp, linen and bamboo are all excellent choices when it comes to dressing your children because they are all breathable, don’t require the use of pesticides, and are hypoallergenic.

Bamboo viscose is a personal favorite of mine because in addition to being hypoallergenic, it is also anti-microbial and naturally uv resistant.

Why Is Sustainable Kids’ Fashion So Expensive?

If you’ve noticed that sustainable fashion brands are a bit more expensive, there’s a good reason behind that!

As consumers, we are accustomed to paying very little for fast fashion, so when we see an ethically made item for double (or triple the cost), we become almost offended.

The reality is that sustainable fashion is more expensive because the costs need to cover the responsibly sourced material and fair wages of workers (who are oftentimes taken advantage of by fast fashion brands).

How To Buy Sustainable Kids’ Clothing On A Budget

Buying sustainable children’s clothing on a budget is easier than you think, and there are several things you can do to snag some great ethical fashion at a low cost!

One of my favorite ways to acquire sustainable children’s clothing is by shopping for it secondhand—whether it’s a local thrift store or an online secondhand boutique—then filling in the gaps with new pieces as part of my child’s capsule wardrobe!

And when it comes to new pieces, I only shop the sale or clearance items. So if there’s a sustainable fashion brand on this list that you really like, sign up for their newsletter, and you’ll be notified of all future sales and clearance events!

With that said, keep reading for the best children’s clothing brands that focus on sustainability!

The Best Organic Baby Wraps And Slings

Shopping For Organic Baby Slings? Read On For The Best Brands That Focus On Your Baby’s Health, Mom’s Comfort And The Planet’s Sustainable Resources

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

If you’re looking for an organic cloth baby carrier, you’ve come to the right place! This guide contains the best baby wraps and slings that are stylish, comfortable and sustainably made!

Are Baby Wraps And Slings Worth The Buy?

With my first child, I didn’t consider buying a wrap or ring sling because, to be honest, these cloth baby carriers looked like a lot of work.

For many first time moms who are not familiar with baby wraps, all of that tying can appear pretty intimidating, and can even create understandable fear and anxiety that your precious cargo will accidentally fall through.

However, after getting tired of lugging around a 20-30 pound car seat with me every time I went out to the grocery store, I decided to give babywearing a try—and it was one of the best “baby gear” purchases I’ve made.

What Are The Benefits Of Babywearing?

Babywearing mimics the womb, which reduces stress for your little one, allowing baby to feel calm and secure. That’s why certain styles of baby wraps are wonderful tools for skin-to-skin contact and soothing fussy babies.

Babywear also allows you to multitask by freeing up your hands! You can get things done around the house, or run errands while your baby is snuggled securely against your body. When I finally decided to wear my baby, a trip to the grocery store was much more pleasant—my wrap even had a pocket on the front where I was able to store my baby’s pacifier.

Lastly, babywear helps increase mom’s milk supply and even helps reduce baby’s spit-up after feedings because they’re resting in an upright position.

At what Age Can You Start Babywearing?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), slings and wraps are intended for infants and toddlers between 8 and 35 pounds.

Babies younger than 4 months of age are still developing neck muscles, and babywear can put your baby in a position where their breathing can become obstructed.

Hence, please take caution and always monitor your baby to make sure that they are not in a curled up position, or have their chin down when being worn in a wrap, sling or other hybrid.

Which Baby Carrier Is Best?

Baby carriers are constantly evolving, but typically range from unstructured hammock-shaped varieties to lengthy fabric that wrap around the body. There are also hybrids that offer a combined set of features.

Choosing the right baby carrier depends on baby’s age and weight. For example, a wrap was better in the first few months of my baby’s life because it was tight and allowed me to keep baby’s head more upright. It was also better for skin to skin contact.

Later on, as my baby grew and developed better head control, I was able to add a ring sling into the mix, which didn’t make me feel as sweaty during summer months. That’s because baby wraps tend to be a little thicker—trapping heat (at least that’s how it was for me).

Lastly, now a days, hybrid carriers are available which don’t require any tying or adjustment, and are the perfect fit for parents (like dads) who might feel self-conscious or intimidated to wear a fancy ring sling or over-complicated baby wrap.

Now that you’re familiar with the basics of babywearing and all of the different carrier styles, let’s look at my favorite brands that make their baby carriers in a responsible way and with non-toxic material to keep your precious one happy and healthy.

Not only are they safer for little ones, but they also offer a range of other benefits such as being free from toxins, chemicals, and other hazardous materials. This means that the snacks stored in them will remain safe and uncontaminated, which is especially important for young children.

Additionally, non-toxic toddler snack containers are often more durable and better at keeping food fresh. This means that snacks can stay fresh for longer and that toddlers can enjoy their favorite snacks without it going stale.

Shopping For Non Toxic Snack Containers

Non-toxic snack containers come in many forms such as glass, stainless steel, bio-plastic (like rice husk), bamboo and silicone. In my opinion, soft silicone snack containers are ideal for babies and young toddlers because they’re soft, light weight, and many come with flexible spill proof lids that allow babies to reach in and grab food without creating a mess.

With that said, below are my top picks for the best plastic-free snack cups for toddlers that are perfect for both indoor snack time as well as outdoor adventures. Some of these recommended toddler snack cups are multifunctional and can be used interchangeably as beverage containers as well.

Reusable toddler snack cups are available in many fun colors and designs. You’ll find that they come in a variety of forms such as pouches, resealable bags and collapsible cups—giving you several zero-waste options to choose from.

If you’re searching for a eco-friendly and non-toxic bunk bed that’s sustainably made, you’ve come to the right place!

New furniture tends to off-gas unhealthy fumes which fill the air and dust particles within your home. That’s why the inside of our homes are actually more polluted than the outside, and can cause a multitude of health problems.

To make your home (and particularly your child’s bedroom healthier) it’s best to purchase eco-friendly furniture made with sustainably sourced wood and non-toxic finish.

With that said, we’ve created this guide to help you find the best non-toxic bunk bed that’s made with natural wood and a safe finish for a healthy night’s sleep!

What Are The Benefits Of Eco-Friendly Bunk Beds?

  • Eco-friendly bunk bed frames aren’t treated with toxic chemicals, and therefore won’t contribute to indoor pollution.
  • Eco-Friendly bunk bed frames do not contain formaldehyde compared to conventional frames that are made with engineered wood particleboard, which tend to be made with glues and adhesives that contain this toxin.
  • Kids’ immune systems are very fragile, and sleeping on an eco-friendly bed frame, as well as an eco-friendly mattress will ensure that they won’t have to fight off toxins while they sleep.
  • With that said, children who suffer from allergies benefit greatly from eco-friendly beds because all materials are natural and hypoallergenic.
  • And lastly, eco-friendly bunk beds are made from sustainably sourced wood that is easily replenished, and sourcing it doesn’t negatively impact our environment.

What Should You Look For When Shopping For A Non-Toxic Bunk Bed?

  • When shopping for a non-toxic bunk bed, opt for sustainably sourced natural wood. You’ll notice that lot of sustainable bunk bed frames are made with New Zealand Pine wood, which grow back incredibly fast and have a low carbon foot print. Avoid MDF/Composite wood, as many are made with formaldehyde and other toxins.
  • Look for frames with that are finished with natural oils, such as linseed oil. Avoid nontoxic finishes or lacquers as they off-gas toxic fumes.
  • When choosing an organic bunk bed, you should also consider sustainable certifications which ensure that ethical standards are being met, and that the material used to construct the frame is truly safe and non-toxic.
  • Bunk beds with a Greenguard Gold Certification are the crème de la crème of non-toxic bunk beds. This certification means that they have been tested for over 10,000 volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) such as benzene, ethylene glycol, formaldehyde, methylene chloride, tetrachloroethylene, toluene, xylene, 1,3-butadiene and many more!

Best Non-Toxic Teething Toys For Babies

Shopping For A Natural Teething Toy? Read On For The Best Non Toxic Teethers To Safely Soothe Baby’s Sore Gums

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a small commission.

Are you looking for a teething toy that’s safe for baby and environmentally friendly? You’ve come to the right place!

Teething is one of the most unpleasant experiences that both baby and mom go through together.

When a baby is teething, the gum pain can disrupt their sleep cycle, their temperature can spike, they drool excessively which can cause skin irritation, and it just makes them oh so irritable.

That’s why teething toys can be such a life saver for babies—and mom’s sanity.

However, not all teethers are safe for babies to chew on, and many conventional teethers can leach harmful chemicals that mimic estrogen—even those synthetic teethers that claim to be BPA-free.

With that said, we’ve put together a guide to non toxic teething toys that help soothe your little one’s gums safely and effectively. They are made from the following:

  • 100% organic cotton
  • Natural hard wood
  • 100% natural rubber
  • Food-grade silicone

What To Avoid When Choosing A Teething Toy

Not all teething toys are safe for babies to put into their mouths, and there are several ingredients to avoid when choosing a teether. Luckily, many natural and organic teethers do not contain these biologically harmful chemicals:

  • BPA (Bisphenol-a)
  • PVC/Vinyl
  • Phthalates
  • Latex
  • Lead
  • Cadmium

With that said, below are some of our favorite non-toxic teething toys that are void of harmful chemicals, and 100% safe for your little one’s gums.

And before you go, take a look at these awesome teething remedies and hacks by Taylor Raine on YouTube.

Best Zero Waste Shampoo Bars For Babies And Kids

Shopping For A Safe And Effective Shampoo Bar Made Just For Kids? Read On For 6 Mom-Approved Brands!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a small commission.

Are you searching for a kid-friendly alternative to liquid shampoo? You’ve come to the right place!

Unlike bottled shampoo, shampoo bars are biodegradable, plastic-free, plant-based and non-toxic—which make them ideal for little ones who have delicate skin and certain scalp conditions.

With that said, we’ve put together a children’s shampoo bar guide that contains only the safest and most trusted brands for babies and kids.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Shampoo Bars On Kids

  • All-natural shampoo bars do not contain synthetic ingredients that can irritate delicate skin. In fact, most solid shampoo bars contain a majority of organic ingredients that are gentle enough even on infants.
  • Shampoo bars are also wonderful space savers. I’m sure that if you’re just like me, you hate having your bathtub cluttered with tons of plastic bottles.
  • Shampoo bars can also double as body wash, which is a great way to save money and avoid even more synthetic chemicals making contact with your little one’s delicate skin!

What Are The Cons Of Using Shampoo Bars On Kids

  • One of the downsides to shampoo bars is that because they contain essential oils, most brands can irritate the eyes if you aren’t careful when washing your child’s hair. However, there are a few brands that have a tear-free formula.
  • Shampoo bars have a higher upfront cost than bottled shampoos, which can be an immediate turn off, but they last as much as 2-3 bottles and are void of toxic ingredients that you should avoid.
  • Shampoo bars can leave hair hair feeling waxy, which is because they don’t strip strands of their natural oils, and this can take some getting used to.

Best Non-Toxic And Eco-Friendly Sippy Cups

Transitioning From A Bottle To A Sippy Cup? Here Are The Best Plastic-Free Sippy Cups And Alternatives For Your Child!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a small commission.

Are you shopping for a nontoxic sippy cup? You’ve come to the right place! I’ve put together a list of the best non toxic sippy cups that are perfect for safely transitioning your child from their bottle!

As your little one prepares to make the transition from the bottle (or breast) to drinking from a “big kid” cup, it’s important to choose the right type of cup to make the transition as easy and safe as possible.

Are Plastic Sippy Cups Safe?

We live in a time where everything is mass produced, and most sippy cups are made from plastic.

And even though most brands claim to be BPA-free, these manufacturers replace it with similar chemicals and therefore still leach hormone disrupting chemicals that mimic estrogen.

According to Environmental Health News, “BPA is increasingly replaced by cousin chemicals — such as Bisphenol F (BPF) or BPS — due to mounting health concerns. However, scientists are now uncovering that these replacement chemicals may be as harmful as BPA.”

So pass on the plastic variety and opt for cups that are constructed from eco-friendly material.

What Are The Benefits Of Eco-Friendly Sippy Cups And Alternatives?

There are several benefits to having your child drink from an eco-friendly sippy cup as opposed to plastic.

  • Most eco-friendly sippy cups are made from natural elements such as glass, stainless steel, and plant matter (silicone is the exception because it’s a man-made polymer, but still more environmentally friendly than plastic, is non-toxic and lasts longer).
  • The majority of eco-friendly training cups can be recycled thus minimizing plastic waste.
  • There is also lower energy consumption in the manufacturing process of eco-friendly cups, thus reducing pollution.
  • You know exactly what is going into your child’s body and don’t have to worry about hormone disrupting chemicals leaching into their liquid.

With that said, below are the best non-toxic and environmentally friendly sippy cups for your child.
