The Best Organic And Sustainable Pacifiers For Breastfed And Formulai Fed Babies

Babies are born with a strong sucking reflex, and can oftentimes be seen on an ultrasound sucking their thumb while in the womb as a soothing mechanism.

Pacifiers can likewise be a great tool for comforting babies. They help babies to self-soothe, fall asleep, and also help to calm babies down during stressful situations, such as doctor visits or long car rides.

Pacifiers also help to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Researchers have found that babies who use pacifiers at nap and bedtime are less likely to die from SIDS.

With that said, there are a ton of pacifier brands available for babies, and parents have the option of choosing between silicone, latex and organic rubber. However, choosing one isn’t as easy as you might think—especially if you’re a first time parent.

Although most latex and silicone pacifiers are safe to use and free from hormone disrupting chemicals such as BPA, the safest pacifier for babies will always be made from organic rubber.

What Are The Benefits Of Natural Rubber Pacifiers?

Organic rubber pacifiers offer a number of benefits to both parents and their new babies:

  • Natural rubber is hypoallergenic and free from any chemical or synthetic additives, making them safer for babies to use.
  • Unlike other pacifiers, natural rubber pacifiers mimic the shape and softness of a mother’s breast. This flexible and stretchy material creates an easy back-and-forth transition for a breastfed baby.
  • Natural rubber pacifiers are also eco-friendly, sustainable, biodegradable, and are made with minimal ingredients.

How To Sterilize A Natural Rubber Pacifier

Natural rubber pacifiers need to be sterilized like any other pacifier. However, because they are made from natural material, it is best to boil them just once (before initial use) to prevent damage from the high heat.

Future sterilization requires that you put the pacifiers in a bowl, and simply pour boiling water over them. This scalding method is a gentle yet thorough way to kill germs and bacteria without damaging your natural rubber pacifiers.

  • Put the pacifiers in a clean bowl
  • Pour them with boiling water
  • Let the pacifiers soak for approx. 5 min.
  • Pick them up and let them dry

How Often Should I Replace A Natural Rubber Pacifier?

Since natural rubber pacifiers don’t last as long as their silicone competitor, you will need to change your baby’s pacifier every 4-8 weeks.

The nipples of natural rubber pacifiers will eventually expand, change shape and even turn gooey, so it’s very important to have another one on hand, and switch it out as soon as you see this type of wear.

With that said, below are 8 recommended natural rubber pacifiers that are available in different shapes and sizes, as it’s important to always choose an age-appropriate size to prevent your baby from choking. Hence, as your baby grows, you’ll need to upgrade the size of their pacifier (typically around 3 and 6 months).

Bath time – the highlight of the day for many toddlers! The splashing, the playing, the rubber duckies… it’s a time for imagination and exploration, and a great way to wind down before bed.

But, as parents, we want to ensure that this fun and relaxing experience isn’t compromised by hidden dangers lurking in the toys we provide for our little ones.

Unfortunately, many bath toys on the market are filled with toxins and collect mold, posing a risk to our children’s health.

From phthalates and PVC to mildew and bacteria, these seemingly harmless playthings can harbor harmful substances that can affect our toddlers’ sensitive skin and developing bodies.

But fear not! We’ve got you covered. In this article, we’ll dive into the world of non-toxic bath toys, rounding up our top recommendations for healthy play in the tub.

Say goodbye to toxic tub time and hello to a safer, more enjoyable bath experience for your tiny tots!

Why You Should Avoid Plastic Bath Toys

Plastic bath toys may seem harmless, but they pose a significant health risk to children. Here are the reasons why:

  • Toxic Chemicals: Plastic bath toys are made from a mixture of chemicals, including phthalates, PVC, and BPA, which are linked to various health problems, such as cancer, reproductive issues, and developmental delays.
  • Mold and Mildew: Plastic bath toys provide an ideal breeding ground for mold and mildew, which can cause respiratory issues, allergies, and skin irritation.
  • Bacterial Growth: Warm water and soap scum create an environment conducive to bacterial growth, leading to infections and illnesses.
  • Choking Hazards: Small plastic parts and broken toys can be a choking hazard for young children.
  • Skin Irritation: Chemicals and dyes used in plastic bath toys can cause skin irritation, rashes, and eczema.
  • Environmental Impact: Plastic bath toys contribute to the already overwhelming plastic waste problem, harming our environment and wildlife.
  • Lack of Regulation: The production of plastic bath toys is not strictly regulated, allowing potentially harmful products to reach the market.
  • Inadequate Cleaning: Plastic bath toys are often difficult to clean, allowing bacteria and mold to accumulate.
  • Long-term Exposure: Children are exposed to these toxic toys repeatedly, increasing their risk of health problems.

Things To Consider When Shopping For Non-Toxic Bath Toys

As a parent, ensuring your child’s safety and health is a top priority. When it comes to bath time, choosing non-toxic bath toys is crucial. Here’s what to look for when shopping for safe and healthy bath toys:

Materials:

  • Natural Rubber: A great alternative to plastic, natural rubber is biodegradable and non-toxic.
  • Silicone: Food-grade silicone is flexible, durable, and free from harsh chemicals.
  • Wood: Sustainable, non-toxic, and gentle on skin, wood is a great option for bath toys.
  • Stainless Steel: Durable, resistant to rust, and easy to clean, stainless steel is a great option for bath toys.

Design and Construction:

  • Simple and Easy to Clean: Avoid toys with complex designs or small parts that can harbor mold.
  • No Small Parts: Ensure the toy is designed for your child’s age group and doesn’t pose a choking hazard.

By considering these factors, you can find non-toxic bath toys that prioritize your child’s health and safety. Remember, a safe bath time is a happy bath time!

The Best Cloth Diaper Brands For Beginners

A Complete Guide To Cloth Diapers And Best Brands

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Aside from being totally adorable and wallet-friendly, cloth diapers can be very intimidating for many curious parents who are considering switching over from disposables.

After all, there are about 8 different cloth diaper styles on the market right now (possibly more), and each design has a different fit. So how do you know which cloth diaper will work best for your baby?

First, let’s go over all the different styles of cloth diapers that are available to you.

What Are The Different Styles Of Cloth Diapers?

Flat Diapers

Flat diapers predate all diapers. They are a single layer of cloth (typically cotton or bamboo), and they need to be folded into multiple layers for absorbency. They are economical, but the downside to flat diapers is that they can leak without a cover, and they require safety pins to secure them in place.

Pre-Fold Diapers

Prefold diapers are rectangular pieces of cloth with multiple layers of fabric for absorption, and can be used inside pocket diapers or reusable covers. Prefolds are economical, versatile, flexible and easy to wash. However, they can be bulky, inconvenient, and must be upgraded in size as baby grows.

Fitted Cloth Diapers

Fitted cloth diapers resemble a disposable diaper in that they have an hourglass shape, leg elastics to keep messes contained, and they are easy to fasten. The downside to fitted cloth diapers is that they are not waterproof, and you need to purchase covers; they are also more expensive than prefold diapers.

Pocket Diapers

Pocket diapers are cloth diapers that contain a waterproof cover and inner pocket that can be stuffed with absorbency layers—like prefolds or inserts. They can grow with your baby and come in really cute designs. The downside to pocket diapers is that they can leak, they tend to be bulky, and stuffing/removing inserts can be inconvenient.

All-In-One Diapers (AIO)

All-In-One diapers have a simple design with a trim fit that prevents leaks, and they are made with several absorbency layers along with a waterproof outer shell. They are considered the most convenient reusable diapers for daycares, and can be used throughout the potty training stage as well. The downside to All-In-One diapers is that they are expensive and take longer to dry.

All-In-2 Diapers (AI2)

All-In-2 cloth diapers are very similar to pocket diapers. They contain a waterproof outer shell, but the inserts snap inside of the diaper instead of getting placed inside of a pocket. Parents love these reusable diapers because most of the time (unless there’s a blow out, you only need to swap out the insert.

Hybrid Cloth Diapers

Hybrids are a cross between disposable and cloth diapers. They have a flexible design, a waterproof shell, and can use any absorbency layer (cloth or disposable). These cloth diapers are also cost-effective, daycare friendly, and travel-friendly. The downside to hybrid cloth diapers is that some designs can leak, and beginners might find them a bit complicating.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Cloth Diapers

  • Cloth diapers are reusable, which means that while you may fork up a descent amount of money in the beginning, you’ll actually end up saving money in the long run. Depending on the brand, the average household spends between $600-$900 a year on disposable diapers—and you’ll keep spending this amount yearly until they are potty trained.
  • Cloth diapers are hypoallergenic and don’t cause skin issues such as chemical burns, rashes or dermatitis. A majority of disposable diapers are packed full of toxic chemicals (including fragrance) that are actually harmful to your baby and their sensitive skin. Cloth diapers are breathable and lined with gentle and non-toxic fabric such as cotton, hemp, and bamboo.
  • While they do use up much more water due to laundering, cloth diapers are zero-waste because they do not need to be discarded like disposable diapers, and can be reused for many years if cared for properly.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?

The amount of cloth diapers that you will need depends on the age of your baby and how often you plan on doing laundry. However, many cloth diaper brands recommend about:

  • 24-26 diapers for a newborn
  • 20-22 diapers for a 3-12 month old
  • 16-18 diapers for a 12-24 month old
  • 12-14 for an older toddler who is potty training

But, because of the overwhelming number of diaper changes in the newborn stage, many parents postpone switching over to cloth diapers until their baby is around 4-6 months old—and that’s understandable.

Do Daycare Centers Allow Cloth Diapers?

When it comes to cloth diapers and childcare facilities, each daycare center is different. Most daycare centers in the United States allow cloth diapers, and there aren’t any state or federal rules that prohibit daycares from allowing cloth diapers.

When it comes to diaper style, if your little one is attending daycare and the facility does indeed allow cloth diapers, then the all-in-one style is the easiest reusable style for daycare workers to manage (they won’t need to struggle with inserts and diaper changes will be quick and easy).

What Type Of Cloth Diaper Is Best Overall?

I will recommend, however, that it’s best to choose brands that strive to make their cloth diapers as non-toxic, eco-friendly and hypoallergenic as possible—because babies have sensitive skin.

Cloth diapers are like infant formula—not all brands will work for your baby and you’ll most likely need to try a few different styles before you find one that works best.

Safest Sustainable Cribs: Non-Toxic Baby Cribs for Healthy Sleep Environment

Give Your Baby The Gift Of A Healthy Start In Life With A Non-Toxic And Sustainable Crib

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

As we furnish our homes, we often overlook a critical aspect: the potential health risks associated with new furniture.

Many conventional furniture pieces emit unhealthy fumes, known as off-gassing, which can have serious consequences for our well-being, especially for vulnerable populations like children and infants.

What is off-gassing, you ask? Off-gassing occurs when chemicals used in manufacturing, such as adhesives, foams, and finishes, release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air.

These VOCs can cause a range of health issues, from headaches and respiratory problems to long-term effects like cancer and neurological damage.

Children and infants are particularly susceptible to the effects of off-gassing due to their developing bodies and sensitive respiratory systems. Prolonged exposure to VOCs can lead to:

  • Respiratory problems, like asthma and allergies
  • Neurological issues, such as ADHD and cognitive delays
  • Increased risk of cancer and other diseases

That is why it is so important to invest in non-toxic baby furniture, which not only promotes a healthier indoor environment for your little one, but also supports a more sustainable future.

By choosing furniture made from natural, organic, and recycled materials, you’re reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals and minimizing your carbon footprint.

The Benefits Of An Eco-Friendly Crib

By choosing an eco-friendly crib, parents can create a safe, healthy, and sustainable sleep space for their infant to thrive. Some benefits of an eco-friendly crib for infants include:

  • Reduced Exposure to Toxic Chemicals: Eco-friendly cribs minimize the use of harmful chemicals, ensuring a healthier sleep environment.
  • Improved Indoor Air Quality: Non-toxic materials and finishes reduce VOCs (volatile organic compounds), promoting better air quality.
  • Allergy Prevention: Natural materials and low-VOC emissions can help prevent allergies and respiratory issues.
  • Sustainable Future: Choosing eco-friendly products supports environmentally responsible practices and reduces waste.
  • Healthier Sleep: A non-toxic sleep environment can lead to better sleep quality, essential for infant development.
  • Peace of Mind: Parents can rest assured knowing their baby’s crib is safe and healthy.
  • Durability: Eco-friendly cribs are often built with sustainable, long-lasting materials, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
  • Supports Baby’s Development: A healthy sleep environment supports cognitive, physical, and emotional development.

What To Consider When Choosing A Non-Toxic Crib

When shopping for a non-toxic crib, parents should look for the following:

  • Materials: Opt for cribs made from natural, sustainably sourced materials like solid wood, bamboo, or reclaimed wood.
  • Finishes: Choose cribs with non-toxic, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) finishes. Look for water-based or plant-based stains and paints.
  • GreenGuard Gold Certification: Ensure the crib has achieved GreenGuard Gold Certification, which guarantees that the product meets rigorous standards for chemical emissions and VOCs. GreenGuard Gold is a third-party certification that tests for over 10,000 chemicals.
  • Mattress: Select a mattress made from natural materials like organic cotton, natural latex, wool, or coconut coir. Avoid mattresses with flame retardants, vinyl, or polyurethane foam.
  • Hardware: Opt for cribs with non-toxic hardware, such as zinc or brass, instead of lead or nickel.
  • Label Claims: Be wary of vague label claims like “non-toxic” or “eco-friendly.” Instead, look for specific certifications like GreenGuard Gold or Oeko-Tex.
  • Manufacturer Transparency: Research the manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability, safety, and transparency. A reputable brand will openly share information about materials and testing.

By considering these factors and prioritizing GreenGuard Gold Certification, parents can create a safer sleep environment for their baby and promote a healthier start in life.

And without further ado, below are our top recommendations for non toxic and sustainable baby cribs for every budget.

Are you looking for ways to organize your closet in a more sustainable way? You’ve come to the right place!

Closet organization can be a daunting task, especially if you’re giving it a plastic-free makeover; but with a few simple tips, you can make the process easier and more efficient.

Organizing your closet without the use of plastic can be a challenge, but it is possible. With a few simple steps, you can create a plastic-free closet that is both organized and sustainable.

  • The first step to creating a plastic-free closet is to go through your items and remove any plastic hangers. These can be replaced with wooden hangers, which are both more eco-friendly and look way better.
  • To avoid contributing to the landfill, you can donate your plastic hangers to a local thrift store, or you can give them away to someone in need by listing them for free in Facebook marketplace. My county has a Facebook group called “helping hands”, and you can list free items that you no longer need.
  • The second step is to invest in some non-plastic storage solutions. Baskets and bins made of woven materials are a great way to store items like scarves and hats. You can also use cloth bags to store items like shoes and purses. These items can be hung on the wall or stored in a closet shelf.
  • Finally, you can use natural materials, such as cedar to keep your closet smelling fresh. Cedar blocks or sachets can be placed in drawers and shelves to keep items smelling fresh and free of mold and mildew. They also keep silver fish and other starch-loving bugs that will chew through your fabric.
  • You can even place soy wax melts of your choice around your clothing, inside your storage boxes and even pull out drawers to give your clothing a lovely non-toxic fragrance. I do so with vanilla scented wax melts, and sometimes I don’t even need to put on perfume because I already smell lovely.
