As a dog owner, you want the best for your furry friend, including a comfortable and safe place to sleep. However, many conventional dog beds contain hidden toxins that can harm your dog’s health.

In this article, we’ll explore the dangers of toxic dog beds, the benefits of organic alternatives, and provide a guide to choosing the best non-toxic and organic dog beds for your beloved pet.

Typical Toxins Found in Dog Beds:

When we bring our furry friends home, we want to provide them with a comfortable and safe space to rest. However, many dog beds on the market contain hidden dangers that can put our pets’ health at risk.

Unbeknownst to many pet owners, conventional dog beds can harbor a multitude of toxic substances that can leach into our dogs’ skin, breathe in, or even ingest.

These toxins can have serious consequences for our dogs’ wellbeing, making it crucial for pet owners to be aware of the potential risks and take steps to protect their beloved companions.

  • Flame retardants—e.g., polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)
  • Chemical dyes and finishes
  • Formaldehyde
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Pesticides and insecticides
  • Heavy metals (e.g., lead, mercury)

Health Issues Caused by Toxins in Dog Beds:

As our dogs spend a significant amount of time sleeping, their beds can have a profound impact on their overall health and wellbeing.

Unfortunately, many conventional dog beds can be breeding grounds for a range of health issues, from skin irritations and allergies to more serious conditions like respiratory problems and chronic diseases.

The materials and chemicals used in these beds can silently sabotage our dogs’ health, making it essential for pet owners to be vigilant and seek out safer alternatives to ensure their furry friends lead happy, healthy lives.

Here are a few more health conditions associated with conventional dog beds:

  • Skin irritation and allergies
  • Respiratory problems and asthma
  • Cancer and tumors
  • Neurological damage and behavioral issues
  • Digestive problems and liver damage

Benefits of Buying Organic Dog Beds:

Organic dog beds offer a range of benefits that can enhance your dog’s quality of life, from improved skin health to reduced allergy symptoms, and even a lower risk of chronic diseases.

By making the switch to organic, you’re showing your dog the love and care they deserve. Here are a few more benefits of opting for non toxic beds:

  • Reduced exposure to toxins and chemicals
  • Improved indoor air quality
  • Healthier skin and coat
  • Reduced risk of chronic diseases
  • Peace of mind for pet owners
  • Eco-friendly and sustainable materials
  • Natural and biodegradable materials

What to Look for in Organic Dog Beds:

With so many options available, it’s essential to know what to look for to ensure you’re getting the best bed for your furry friend. Below are some important features to keep in mind:

  • Certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and Oeko-Tex
  • Natural materials like cotton, wool, and natural latex
  • Non-toxic and biodegradable filling materials
  • Durable and long-lasting construction
  • Easy cleaning and maintenance

Your dog’s health and wellbeing deserve the best, and that includes a safe and comfortable place to sleep. By choosing non-toxic and organic dog beds, you’re reducing your dog’s exposure to harmful chemicals and creating a healthier environment for them to thrive. Remember, a healthy dog is a happy dog!

Hocus Pocus

Release Date: 1993

Rating: PG

Hocus Pocus is my favorite Halloween movie for kids, as well as adults. When the Sanderson sisters (who happen to be witches) accidentally get conjured up from 17th century Salem, three local kids have to get rid of them by sunrise. It’s fun, it’s exciting, and it’s so nostalgic!

Harry Potter

Release Date: 2001

Rating: PG

My kids and I adore all of the Harry Potter movies. At age 11, Harry Potter learns that he is the son of 2 powerful Wizards, and begins his own wizard studies at Hogwarts. If you love magic, ghosts and mythical beasts, this franchise is a must-see!

The Adams Family

Release Date: 1991

Rating: PG-13

They’re creepy, they’re spooky and all together ooky, the Adams Family is another family-friendly Halloween movie that should be on everyone’s fall bucket list of movies to watch. It’s a blast from the past that you don’t see much of today in the film world, and to be honest, the new animated version does not even come close to the original!

The Goonies

Release Date: 1985

Rating: PG

If you love movies about pirates and treasure hunting, then you’ll love this blast from the past! The Goonies is an all-American classic that definitely needs to be on your fall bucket list! A group of local misfits follow a treasure map to unearth abandoned treasure that saves their homes from being foreclosed. It’s fun and fast-paced, but it does have the Fratellis—an Italian crime family who are after the kids with guns—so take caution.

Casper

Release Date: 1995

Rating: PG

Christina Ricci stars in this Halloween classic alongside Casper, the friendly ghost, and it’s very fun to watch—especially if you were a 90s kid. Take caution though if you have little ones—this movie does have a focus on death and some mild bullying.

Ghostbusters

Release Date: 1984

Rating: PG

Three university parapsychologists lose their research grant and decide to open their own business, “Ghostbusters”. When they get summoned to investigate some strange happenings in a Central Park West apartment, they discover that all of Manhattan is being besieged by scary worldly demons. It’s not too scary though, and little kids will enjoy it. You can also opt for the 2021 version—Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Coraline

Release Date: 2009

Rating: PG

Coraline is a visually stunning stop-motion animated Halloween flick for kids and adults. It’s about a girl named Coraline Jones who finds a secret world that’s just like her own, but better. However, things eventually get a bit creepy, and she must escape from her “other” mother.

The Witches

Release Date: 1990

Rating: PG

I remember watching “The Witches” by Roald Dahl in the 4th grade, and it’s been a favorite Halloween movie of mine ever since. This movie might be a little too much for younger kids under 7, so take caution. You can even opt for the 2020 remake of The Witches with Anne Hathaway.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Release Date: 1993

Rating: PG

This family-friendly Halloween movie is a classic! Bored with the same old scare-and-scream routine, Pumpkin King Jack Skellington longs to spread the joy of Christmas. But his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy, and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere!

Release Date: 2001

Rating: G

If you don’t want your kids to go to bed terrified, then Monsters Inc is the perfect Halloween movie for family night. This movie is all about spooky yet very cute professional monsters who scare kids in order to harvest screams. It’s told from a monster’s perspective and is very fun to watch!

Tim Burton’s Corpse bride

Release Date: 2005

Rating: PG

This stop-motion animation by Tim Burton is about a young man who gets whisked off to the underworld and gets wed to a mysterious corpse bride. It’s a pretty cool movie to watch around Halloween, but might be kind of slow and un-interesting for younger children under 12.

Frankenweenie

Release Date: 2012

Rating: PG

Frankenweenie is a fun family-friendly Halloween movie. It’s about a dog that comes to life—much like Frankenstein—only funnier. It has eerie vibes without over-the-top scares, and it’s great for kids age 8 and older.

Cruella

Release Date: 2021

Rating: PG-13

This movie is a fun watch for teens and adults. Disney’s CRUELLA follows the early days of one of cinema’s most notorious villains. It takes place during the 1970s London punk rock revolution, where a young grifter transforms herself into the raucous, revenge-bent Cruella de Vil.

Coco

Release Date: 2017

Rating: PG

In this Disney Pixar’s extraordinary adventure with visually stunning animation, a boy who dreams of becoming a great musician embarks on a journey to uncover the mysteries behind his ancestor’s stories and traditions. It takes place during Dia De Los Muertos (Day Of The Dead), and is a fun watch for kids 7 and up.

Hotel Transylvania

Release Date: 2012

Rating: PG

The Hotel Transylvania franchise is a ton of fun for the whole family, and mine loves all 4 installments. This movie centers around Dracula, his family and fun shenanigans that are always happening at his hotel for monsters.

Peanuts: It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Release Date: 1966

Rating: PG-13

If you want to show your kids a not-so-spooky Halloween movie with heartwarming scenes, look no further than Peanuts: It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. This movie is a classic, and has been a favorite among many since its release in 1966!

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Release Date: 2016

Rating: PG-13

This magical prequel to the Harry Potter series is about a magizoologist who must track down magical creatures (who inadvertently got loose) and put them back where they belong. It’s a fun movie that’s great for older children.

Gremlins

Release Date: 1984

Rating: PG-13

This blast from the 80s past is about a teenage boy who accidentally unleashes a horde of monsters on a small town. It’s not too scary, but probably best for older children who understand that Gizmo and his buddies are just puppets.

Beetlejuice

Release Date: 1988

Rating: PG

Beetlejuice is a fun ride, but best for older children (it might cause nightmares for the younger ones). It’s about a ghost couple who finds their now-vacant home invaded by an obnoxious family, and hires a sleazy ghost named Beetlejuice to help scare them away.

Labyrinth

Release Date: 1986

Rating: PG

This classic movie is best to watch around Halloween because it’s full of fun, magical creatures that your kids will love! It’s about a young girl who enters a world of her own creation, and must rescue her baby brother from the goblin king (played by David Bowie).

Paranorman

Release Date: 2022

Rating: PG

This family-friendly Halloween movie is a magically thrilling story of Norman, a boy who must use his ability to see and speak with the dead to save his town from a centuries-old curse

The Box Trolls

Release Date: 2014

Rating: PG

From the creators of Coraline, The Box Trolls is a fun stop-motion animated Halloween movie about boy who is raised by quirky creatures. Together, they must fight the town villain and save his family. It’s a cute movie that’s not too scary for little ones, and reminds me a lot of James And The Giant Peach.

Little Monsters

Release Date: 1989

Rating: PG

This blast from the past is about a sixth-grader named Brian who recently moved to a new town and befriends Maurice, the monster under his bed. While Brian and Maurice have a lot of fun making mischief, things turn serious when Brian’s brother gets kidnapped!

Little Shop Of Horrors

Release Date: 1986

Rating: PG-13

In this quirky Halloween flick, Rick Moranis plays a nerdy flower clerk who is forced to lure in victims for his bloodthirsty talking plant. It’s a musical comedy, and might be better suited for older kids.

E.T. —The Extra Terrestrial

Release Date: 1982

Rating: PG

Many people might argue that E.T. isn’t really a Halloween movie, but it does take place around Halloween, the characters go trick-or-treating, and the fun yet eerie vibes make this film a great one to watch during the fall.

Honest Review Of Uproot Clean Pet Hair Removal Tool

The Many Reasons Why The Uproot Clean Pet Hair Removal Tool Is A Must-Have For Pet Owners

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a small commission. Also, all thoughts and opinions about this product are my own.

I have a golden retriever puppy who is a wonderful family dog, but has begun to shed quite a bit. Her hair effortlessly rubs off onto our couches, carpet, dog bedding and our clothing.

Luckily, a cool little reusable pet hair removal tool by Uproot clean has been a lifesaver in helping me tackle the constant battle against her loose hair.

I was gifted the Uproot Clean two years ago when we fostered a German Shepherd, and it was so effective that I decided to hold on to it just in case we would need it again one day—and we do!

Our Golden Retriever Puppy

What Is The Uproot Clean Tool?

Source : YouTube | Uproot Clean

The Uproot Clean tool is a multi-purpose reusable lint and pet hair remover that tackles everything ranging from carpets, rugs, clothes, furniture, bedding, backpacks, car seats, cat condos and more.

There are no adhesives to mess with, nothing to throw out, and all you have to do is scrape. Yes, scrape—but, don’t worry, because the creators of Uproot Clean have designed this tool in such a way that it doesn’t snag.

You should also know that the tool does not work on certain carpets and fabric like berber—this is due to the woven loop system that it has going on.

I Use Uproot Clean On Pet Bedding

My Golden Retriever’s shedding can quickly turn her bedding into a furry mess, making it a hassle to clean regularly. With the Uproot Clean tool, I can easily remove her hair from the bedding in just a few swipes. This is great because I can get rid of a majority of her hair prior to throwing her favorite blankets into the washer.

I Use Uproot Clean On My Sofa Cushions

Uproot Clean scrapes up random lint that I didn’t even know exists on my removable couch cushion covers —especially stuff that adheres to it from being in the dryer.

In fact, below is an image of my sofa cushion cover that was accidentally washed and dried with a fuzzy blanket. Needless to say, UpRoot Clean came to the rescue.

We’ve had our sofa set for 4 years now, and over time those poor cushion covers tend develop some serious pilling, even if they’re washed properly. So I use the Uproot Clean tool to get rid of those annoying little balls of lint, and my sofa cushions go back to looking descent.

I Use Uproot Clean On My Car Seats And Floor

UpRoot Clean | Instagram

If you have a furry friend that enjoys riding in the car with you, then owning the Uproot Cleaner is a must (especially if they are a mega-shedder).

I used to waste a ton of lint rollers trying to grab pet hair off of my car seats, but now I use my UpRoot cleaner and scrape the hair up with ease. The little bit of hair that’s left over is easily sucked up by a vacuum.

My Sweaters Look New Again

I love my sweaters, but after sometime, they begin to show signs of wear, and like my sofa cushions, pilling occurs as well. So you can imagine my delight when I used the Uproot Clean lint remover on a few of them and restored their appearance!

I find that it works best if you’re wearing the sweater (or any other garment you choose to use your uproot cleaner on), or laying it on a hard, flat surface.

The tiny travel size UpRoot cleaner works especially great on my sweatshirt sleeves near the wrists and armpit area where pilling tends to occur the most.

The Best Cloth Diaper Brands For Beginners

A Complete Guide To Cloth Diapers And Best Brands

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Aside from being totally adorable and wallet-friendly, cloth diapers can be very intimidating for many curious parents who are considering switching over from disposables.

After all, there are about 8 different cloth diaper styles on the market right now (possibly more), and each design has a different fit. So how do you know which cloth diaper will work best for your baby?

First, let’s go over all the different styles of cloth diapers that are available to you.

What Are The Different Styles Of Cloth Diapers?

Flat Diapers

Flat diapers predate all diapers. They are a single layer of cloth (typically cotton or bamboo), and they need to be folded into multiple layers for absorbency. They are economical, but the downside to flat diapers is that they can leak without a cover, and they require safety pins to secure them in place.

Pre-Fold Diapers

Prefold diapers are rectangular pieces of cloth with multiple layers of fabric for absorption, and can be used inside pocket diapers or reusable covers. Prefolds are economical, versatile, flexible and easy to wash. However, they can be bulky, inconvenient, and must be upgraded in size as baby grows.

Fitted Cloth Diapers

Fitted cloth diapers resemble a disposable diaper in that they have an hourglass shape, leg elastics to keep messes contained, and they are easy to fasten. The downside to fitted cloth diapers is that they are not waterproof, and you need to purchase covers; they are also more expensive than prefold diapers.

Pocket Diapers

Pocket diapers are cloth diapers that contain a waterproof cover and inner pocket that can be stuffed with absorbency layers—like prefolds or inserts. They can grow with your baby and come in really cute designs. The downside to pocket diapers is that they can leak, they tend to be bulky, and stuffing/removing inserts can be inconvenient.

All-In-One Diapers (AIO)

All-In-One diapers have a simple design with a trim fit that prevents leaks, and they are made with several absorbency layers along with a waterproof outer shell. They are considered the most convenient reusable diapers for daycares, and can be used throughout the potty training stage as well. The downside to All-In-One diapers is that they are expensive and take longer to dry.

All-In-2 Diapers (AI2)

All-In-2 cloth diapers are very similar to pocket diapers. They contain a waterproof outer shell, but the inserts snap inside of the diaper instead of getting placed inside of a pocket. Parents love these reusable diapers because most of the time (unless there’s a blow out, you only need to swap out the insert.

Hybrid Cloth Diapers

Hybrids are a cross between disposable and cloth diapers. They have a flexible design, a waterproof shell, and can use any absorbency layer (cloth or disposable). These cloth diapers are also cost-effective, daycare friendly, and travel-friendly. The downside to hybrid cloth diapers is that some designs can leak, and beginners might find them a bit complicating.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Cloth Diapers

  • Cloth diapers are reusable, which means that while you may fork up a descent amount of money in the beginning, you’ll actually end up saving money in the long run. Depending on the brand, the average household spends between $600-$900 a year on disposable diapers—and you’ll keep spending this amount yearly until they are potty trained.
  • Cloth diapers are hypoallergenic and don’t cause skin issues such as chemical burns, rashes or dermatitis. A majority of disposable diapers are packed full of toxic chemicals (including fragrance) that are actually harmful to your baby and their sensitive skin. Cloth diapers are breathable and lined with gentle and non-toxic fabric such as cotton, hemp, and bamboo.
  • While they do use up much more water due to laundering, cloth diapers are zero-waste because they do not need to be discarded like disposable diapers, and can be reused for many years if cared for properly.

How Many Cloth Diapers Do I Need?

The amount of cloth diapers that you will need depends on the age of your baby and how often you plan on doing laundry. However, many cloth diaper brands recommend about:

  • 24-26 diapers for a newborn
  • 20-22 diapers for a 3-12 month old
  • 16-18 diapers for a 12-24 month old
  • 12-14 for an older toddler who is potty training

But, because of the overwhelming number of diaper changes in the newborn stage, many parents postpone switching over to cloth diapers until their baby is around 4-6 months old—and that’s understandable.

Do Daycare Centers Allow Cloth Diapers?

When it comes to cloth diapers and childcare facilities, each daycare center is different. Most daycare centers in the United States allow cloth diapers, and there aren’t any state or federal rules that prohibit daycares from allowing cloth diapers.

When it comes to diaper style, if your little one is attending daycare and the facility does indeed allow cloth diapers, then the all-in-one style is the easiest reusable style for daycare workers to manage (they won’t need to struggle with inserts and diaper changes will be quick and easy).

What Type Of Cloth Diaper Is Best Overall?

I will recommend, however, that it’s best to choose brands that strive to make their cloth diapers as non-toxic, eco-friendly and hypoallergenic as possible—because babies have sensitive skin.

Cloth diapers are like infant formula—not all brands will work for your baby and you’ll most likely need to try a few different styles before you find one that works best.

Safest Sustainable Cribs: Non-Toxic Baby Cribs for Healthy Sleep Environment

Give Your Baby The Gift Of A Healthy Start In Life With A Non-Toxic And Sustainable Crib

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

As we furnish our homes, we often overlook a critical aspect: the potential health risks associated with new furniture.

Many conventional furniture pieces emit unhealthy fumes, known as off-gassing, which can have serious consequences for our well-being, especially for vulnerable populations like children and infants.

What is off-gassing, you ask? Off-gassing occurs when chemicals used in manufacturing, such as adhesives, foams, and finishes, release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air.

These VOCs can cause a range of health issues, from headaches and respiratory problems to long-term effects like cancer and neurological damage.

Children and infants are particularly susceptible to the effects of off-gassing due to their developing bodies and sensitive respiratory systems. Prolonged exposure to VOCs can lead to:

  • Respiratory problems, like asthma and allergies
  • Neurological issues, such as ADHD and cognitive delays
  • Increased risk of cancer and other diseases

That is why it is so important to invest in non-toxic baby furniture, which not only promotes a healthier indoor environment for your little one, but also supports a more sustainable future.

By choosing furniture made from natural, organic, and recycled materials, you’re reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals and minimizing your carbon footprint.

The Benefits Of An Eco-Friendly Crib

By choosing an eco-friendly crib, parents can create a safe, healthy, and sustainable sleep space for their infant to thrive. Some benefits of an eco-friendly crib for infants include:

  • Reduced Exposure to Toxic Chemicals: Eco-friendly cribs minimize the use of harmful chemicals, ensuring a healthier sleep environment.
  • Improved Indoor Air Quality: Non-toxic materials and finishes reduce VOCs (volatile organic compounds), promoting better air quality.
  • Allergy Prevention: Natural materials and low-VOC emissions can help prevent allergies and respiratory issues.
  • Sustainable Future: Choosing eco-friendly products supports environmentally responsible practices and reduces waste.
  • Healthier Sleep: A non-toxic sleep environment can lead to better sleep quality, essential for infant development.
  • Peace of Mind: Parents can rest assured knowing their baby’s crib is safe and healthy.
  • Durability: Eco-friendly cribs are often built with sustainable, long-lasting materials, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
  • Supports Baby’s Development: A healthy sleep environment supports cognitive, physical, and emotional development.

What To Consider When Choosing A Non-Toxic Crib

When shopping for a non-toxic crib, parents should look for the following:

  • Materials: Opt for cribs made from natural, sustainably sourced materials like solid wood, bamboo, or reclaimed wood.
  • Finishes: Choose cribs with non-toxic, low-VOC (volatile organic compound) finishes. Look for water-based or plant-based stains and paints.
  • GreenGuard Gold Certification: Ensure the crib has achieved GreenGuard Gold Certification, which guarantees that the product meets rigorous standards for chemical emissions and VOCs. GreenGuard Gold is a third-party certification that tests for over 10,000 chemicals.
  • Mattress: Select a mattress made from natural materials like organic cotton, natural latex, wool, or coconut coir. Avoid mattresses with flame retardants, vinyl, or polyurethane foam.
  • Hardware: Opt for cribs with non-toxic hardware, such as zinc or brass, instead of lead or nickel.
  • Label Claims: Be wary of vague label claims like “non-toxic” or “eco-friendly.” Instead, look for specific certifications like GreenGuard Gold or Oeko-Tex.
  • Manufacturer Transparency: Research the manufacturer’s commitment to sustainability, safety, and transparency. A reputable brand will openly share information about materials and testing.

By considering these factors and prioritizing GreenGuard Gold Certification, parents can create a safer sleep environment for their baby and promote a healthier start in life.

And without further ado, below are our top recommendations for non toxic and sustainable baby cribs for every budget.

The Best Organic Baby Wraps And Slings

Shopping For Organic Baby Slings? Read On For The Best Brands That Focus On Your Baby’s Health, Mom’s Comfort And The Planet’s Sustainable Resources

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

If you’re looking for an organic cloth baby carrier, you’ve come to the right place! This guide contains the best baby wraps and slings that are stylish, comfortable and sustainably made!

Are Baby Wraps And Slings Worth The Buy?

With my first child, I didn’t consider buying a wrap or ring sling because, to be honest, these cloth baby carriers looked like a lot of work.

For many first time moms who are not familiar with baby wraps, all of that tying can appear pretty intimidating, and can even create understandable fear and anxiety that your precious cargo will accidentally fall through.

However, after getting tired of lugging around a 20-30 pound car seat with me every time I went out to the grocery store, I decided to give babywearing a try—and it was one of the best “baby gear” purchases I’ve made.

What Are The Benefits Of Babywearing?

Babywearing mimics the womb, which reduces stress for your little one, allowing baby to feel calm and secure. That’s why certain styles of baby wraps are wonderful tools for skin-to-skin contact and soothing fussy babies.

Babywear also allows you to multitask by freeing up your hands! You can get things done around the house, or run errands while your baby is snuggled securely against your body. When I finally decided to wear my baby, a trip to the grocery store was much more pleasant—my wrap even had a pocket on the front where I was able to store my baby’s pacifier.

Lastly, babywear helps increase mom’s milk supply and even helps reduce baby’s spit-up after feedings because they’re resting in an upright position.

At what Age Can You Start Babywearing?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), slings and wraps are intended for infants and toddlers between 8 and 35 pounds.

Babies younger than 4 months of age are still developing neck muscles, and babywear can put your baby in a position where their breathing can become obstructed.

Hence, please take caution and always monitor your baby to make sure that they are not in a curled up position, or have their chin down when being worn in a wrap, sling or other hybrid.

Which Baby Carrier Is Best?

Baby carriers are constantly evolving, but typically range from unstructured hammock-shaped varieties to lengthy fabric that wrap around the body. There are also hybrids that offer a combined set of features.

Choosing the right baby carrier depends on baby’s age and weight. For example, a wrap was better in the first few months of my baby’s life because it was tight and allowed me to keep baby’s head more upright. It was also better for skin to skin contact.

Later on, as my baby grew and developed better head control, I was able to add a ring sling into the mix, which didn’t make me feel as sweaty during summer months. That’s because baby wraps tend to be a little thicker—trapping heat (at least that’s how it was for me).

Lastly, now a days, hybrid carriers are available which don’t require any tying or adjustment, and are the perfect fit for parents (like dads) who might feel self-conscious or intimidated to wear a fancy ring sling or over-complicated baby wrap.

Now that you’re familiar with the basics of babywearing and all of the different carrier styles, let’s look at my favorite brands that make their baby carriers in a responsible way and with non-toxic material to keep your precious one happy and healthy.

Best Non-Toxic Nail Polish Brands For Kids

A Guide To Water-Based And Non-Toxic Nail Polish For Kids That Are Mom Approved

This post contains affiliate links which may earn us a commission.

Little kids copy everything we grownups do—which means they want to paint their nails to look pretty just like mommy.

But, as we all know, conventional “grown up” nail polish isn’t safe for little ones to use. Nail polish is full of unhealthy chemicals and toxins that can harm your little one via fumes and accidental ingestion (kids like to put their hands into their mouth a lot). And it’s not worth risking their health and safety.

We recommend water-based nail polish instead. There are quite a few nail polish brands that make baby and kid-friendly peel-off nail polish that’s made with non-toxic ingredients and is completely safe to use.

A Little Nail Polish History

Nail color has been around for quite some time. In fact, you’ll be pretty surprised to know that the trend dates back all the to way to 3,200 BC, where the Babylonians engaged in nail painting prior to battle, in order to distinguish rank.

Likewise, the practice was used by the Chinese dating back to 3,000 BC to distinguish class and dynasty. And ofcourse, by the Egyptians.

Only, nail color wasn’t made of the same toxic ingredients that we’re familiar with today. Not even close.

Ancient nail “polish” was made from natural ingredients such as kohl (a dark powder similar to charcoal), beeswax, and plant dyes—there was no formaldehyde, acetone or sulfates.

Nail polish today, on the other hand, is formulated with harsh and harmful chemicals, animal products and embalming fluid—check out 16 of the most common chemicals used in nail polish today:

1. Formaldehyde, 2. Formaldehyde Resin, 3. Toluene, 4. Xylene, 5. Acetone, 6. Phthalates (including DBP), 7. Camphor, 8. Parabens, 9. Ethyl Tosylamide, 10. Triphenyl Phosphate (TPP), 11. Animal-derived ingredients, 12. Styrene, 13. Bisphenol A, 14. Glycol Ether of Series E (Glycol ethers derived from ethylene oxide), 15. Nonylphenol ethoxylate, 16. Sulfate

Animals are also used to create certain shades of nail polish. You know that really pretty, pearly shimmer in nailpolish? That, unfortunately, is a result of fish scales. Then you have certain colors, like red shades, which require the need for boiled beetles, and animal fat to achieve a preferred thickness.

Reasons To Use Water-Based Nail Polish

  • Water based nail polish is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and are void of harmful fumes.
  • Nail polish for kids is also cruelty-free and does not contain any animal products.

If you’re considering purchasing water-based vegan nail polish for your child, then take a look at our recommended list of non toxic nail Polish brands below!

2. Piggy Paint Nail Polish

Piggy Paint is a premium water based nail polish brand for kids that moms have trusted for the last 12 years and counting. Piggy Paint nail polish is odorless and contains zero toxic chemicals—no wonder their tagline is: “as safe as mud”. It’s even safe for pregnant moms to use as well! It’s also important to note that Piggy paint, though water-based, is not a peel off polish and does require nail polish remover (which they also make and is likewise non-toxic).

Low-Waste Halloween Candy: Alternatives for a Sustainable Trick-Or-Treating Experience

Boo-tifully Sustainable Trick-Or-Treat Candy Ideas For A Green Halloween

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Ah, Halloween – the spookiest, most sugary night of the year!

As we don our costumes and decorate our homes with cobwebs and jack-o’-lanterns, let’s not forget the sweet treats that make this holiday so thrilling for kids (and let’s be honest, adults too!).

But have you ever stopped to think about the staggering amount of candy we buy each year? According to the National Confectioners Association, Americans shell out over $2.5 billion on Halloween candy annually!

That’s a whole lotta sugar, folks!

But here’s the scary part: all that candy comes with a frightful amount of waste. Think about it – the wrappers, the packaging, the plastic trick-or-treat buckets… it adds up to a monster of a mess! In fact, the average American generates about 25 pounds of Halloween waste each year. Yikes!

Now, we’re not here to be the candy police or ruin the fun of this beloved holiday. But we do want to encourage you to think creatively about how you can make your Halloween celebrations a little more sustainable, a little more eco-friendly, and a little less wasteful.

So grab a (reusable) bag and let’s dive into some sweet solutions for a greener Halloween!
