Congratulations on your child’s holy communion! This is an important milestone in their spiritual journey and a wonderful time for your family to celebrate.

The celebration of a child’s first communion is a time-honored tradition that has been passed down through generations. It is a reminder of the importance of faith and the power of prayer. It is also a time to reflect on the teachings of the church and the commitment to living a life of faith.

As your child continues to grow and explore their faith, may they be blessed with a life of joy and peace. Congratulations again on this special day and may God continue to bless your family.

What Is Holy Communion

First holy communion is a religious milestone that marks an important step in a child’s spiritual journey. It is a sacrament of the Catholic Church that is typically celebrated when a child is between the ages of seven and twelve, and during the ceremony, a child receives the Eucharist, which is the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

The significance of first holy communion is not only spiritual, but also social. It is a time for family and friends to come together and celebrate a child’s commitment to their faith.

What Do Children Wear For Their First Holy Communion?

For many children, their first holy communion is a special and memorable occasion. An important part of the celebration is the clothing that is worn. For many denominations, children wear white for their first holy communion.

White is often associated with purity and innocence, making it a symbolic and meaningful choice for this special event. Dressing in white is a way for children to show reverence for the sacrament and to signify that they are ready to receive the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

The clothing worn for first holy communion is often a white dress or suit, but some churches may have specific dress codes that require a certain style or color. The clothing should be modest and appropriate for the occasion. It is also important to consider the weather and the time of year when choosing an outfit for the ceremony.

No matter what the clothing looks like, the important thing is that children feel comfortable and confident in their clothing as they celebrate their first holy communion. With the right outfit and attitude, children can make this special day even more meaningful.

How I Found The Perfect Suit

I won’t lie, it was very frustrating trying to find the perfect first holy communion suit for my son. And that’s because compared to the many first communion dresses that are sold online, there really aren’t very many suit options for boys (and the few suits that are available, are very cookie-cutter).

Since this is a once in a lifetime event, I wanted my son to have a suit with a little bit of a “wow factor”. I wanted texture, I wanted a subtle design. Nothing too fancy, but definitely something that stood out.

After what seemed like hours of scrolling through both Etsy and Amazon, I finally found a suit that was sold on Amazon, and it came arrived from the United Kingdom in less than a week.

I was pleasantly surprised because the shipping estimate said “4-6 weeks”, but much to my surprise, it arrived 4 days after I clicked that order button.

How I Chose The Right Size

The seller whom I ordered from on Amazon is called SIRRI, and they are a UK based clothing company that designs and manufactures children’s and men’s occasional and casual wear.

The Suit is available from 1T to 15 years, and they have a sizing chart so that you can choose the correct suit size. This made me super nervous because I really wanted to get the correct size on the first try.

Luckily, I had some measuring tape on hand, so I measured his arms, legs, and waste, and then ordered one size up. It’s always better to get a suit that’s a few centimeters bigger (which you can always hem), than to get something that ends up being too tight and makes your child uncomfortable.

With that said, on the chart, my son fit the size 10 criteria, but I ordered the 11 and it fit perfectly, so I’m glad I went with my gut.

My 9 year old son is 4’6” and weighs 73 pounds, so the size 11 ended up being the perfect size.

What’s Included With The Suit

This charming 5 piece holy communion suit includes a jacket, a matching swirl design waistcoat and tie, one shirt and trousers. The single breasted jacket is fully lined, and has a double vent on the back. The waistcoat comes with four buttons and has a plain satin back.

The tie clips together around the back of the neck, which I love because it’s super convenient. And I love the swirl design and texture of the vest, which matches the little hanky that comes tucked into the front pocket of the suit.

My son looks incredibly handsome in this suit, and I couldn’t be happier with this purchase.

Managing Menstrual Pain with Food: Tips from ‘Cycles’ by Amy J. Hammer

Expert Tips For Managing Menstrual Pain With Food—With Amy J. Hammer, Author Of “Cycles”!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

I’ve had painful period cramps for most of my life, and when I was diagnosed with endometriosis a year ago after discovering it during a laparoscopy procedure, it all started to make sense as to why my cramps were always so severe—to the point where I would sometimes vomit.

Menstrual pain in general can be a difficult and very uncomfortable experience for many women, but if you have Endometriosis or a similar condition (like PCOS), that pain can intensified by a million.

With that said, medication can only do so much to minimize pain, and if you’re like me and refuse to be placed on hormonal contraceptives to help with pain, then you have to self-educate and learn alternatives to traditional pain management—because you are your own best advocate.

Fortunately, there are a variety of strategies that can be used to help manage the pain without medication, and one of the most effective strategies is controlling menstrual pain with food.

It turns out that certain foods can help reduce the severity of menstrual cramps, while others can make your pain even worse.

For example, eating foods that are high in magnesium such as dark leafy greens, and Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, can help reduce the pain associated with menstruation. Whereas highly processed foods and alcohol can make inflammation worse.

Knowing what to eat and what to avoid for menstrual health can be pretty confusing, so I was THRILLED to find a book that has literally become my PERIOD Bible.

Cycles” by Amy J.Hammer is a staple on my bookshelf. I binged on the information the first day that I got it in the mail, and continue to use it whenever I need to retrieve a recipe from it!

What’s that? Recipes? Yup! This wonderful book isn’t just about scientific facts. This gem contains A LOT of recipes, all of which go hand-in-hand with specific phases of your cycle to help you feel your absolute best.

”Menstrual cramps—their severity and whether we get them, are connected to our lifestyle and overall health”—Amy J. Hammer

This book has been an invaluable resource in my journey to become healthier, and has provided me with the knowledge and tools to make better decisions in my diet and lifestyle choices:

  • 40 nutrient-dense, menstrual-phase specific recipes that support overall health.
  • The science of menstrual cycles and how the different phases of the cycle affect the brain and body beyond the reproductive system.
  • How to track your cycle using fertility awareness–based methods.
  • How to prepare and what to expect during the menopausal transition and beyond.
  • Detailed movement, self-care, and nutrition tips that optimize overall health throughout the menstrual cycle phases and your lifespan

With that said, below is a sneak peek from Amy’s book, Cycles. It’s a list of what foods to avoid, and what foods to load up on for a healthy period to reduce inflammation.

Foods To Avoid If You Struggle With Period Pain

According to the author, there are certain foods that should be avoided in order to maintain good menstrual health, improve gut-health, and minimize cramping. With that said, here is what the author recommends:

  • Avoid foods with added sugar, artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup.
  • Avoid refined and processed vegetable oils like corn, soy and canola.
  • Avoid conventional dairy products (opt for grass-fed organic milk or plant-based milk alternatives).
  • Avoid processed and refined grains.
  • Avoid poor quality conventional meat.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine.

Foods To Embrace If You Struggle With Period Pain

  • Eat a high fiber diet consisting of vegetables, leafy greens, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains.
  • Eat plenty of wild fish such as salmon, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, and other omega-3 rich foods such as flax, chia seeds, walnuts and oysters.
  • Add anti-inflammatory spices to your cooking such as turmeric, ginger and cinnamon.
  • Consume plentiful healthy fats like extra virgin olive oil, butter from grass-fed cows, ghee, coconut oil and fat from pastured animals.
  • When you eat meat, eggs, seafood or wild game, eat the good stuff: pasture mixed, organic, grass-fed, free-range, and/or wild-caught.
  • Eat magnesium-loaded foods consisting of leafy greens, avocados, almonds, salmon, sweet potatoes, figs, fermented dairy products, legume and beans.
  • Eat zinc-rich foods such as oysters, mussels, pumpkin seeds, beef, lamb, organ meats, yogurt, chickpeas and cashews.
  • Up your intake of fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, fermented dairy, and lacto-fermented vegetables.
A recipe from “Cycles” by Amy J. Hammer

It is important to note that while food can be an effective way to manage menstrual pain, it is not a substitute for medical treatment.

If you are experiencing severe menstrual cramps, it is important to speak to your doctor to determine the best course of treatment. Additionally, it is important to maintain a healthy and balanced diet to ensure that your body is getting the proper nutrition it needs.

By controlling menstrual pain with food, you can greatly reduce the severity of your menstrual cramps and make your period more manageable.

For more amazing tips, check out Amy’s book “Cycles: The Science of Periods, Why They Matter, and How to Nourish Each Phase.” It’s available on Amazon, and it’s a must-have staple on your bookshelf.

5 Best Natural Deodorants For Kids And Pre-Teens

The 5 Best Aluminum-Free Deodorants For Kids And Pre-Teens

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Around the time my son turned 8 years of age, I noticed that his armpits had developed a funky odor—especially on days when he had been really active at school.

I knew that he would eventually start to smell, but this early? I have to admit, I was a little concerned. So at his well check appointment, I asked his pediatrician if it was normal to have funky armpits this early in adolescence, and his doctor said “absolutely”.

Body odor is an unavoidable part of growing up. While some children may start to experience body odor around age 10 or 11, it is not at all uncommon for some children to start having body odor as early as 8 years of age (like mine).

The whole thing is bitter-sweet. You’re celebrating the fact that your child is growing up, but then you find yourself mourning that “little baby”, which they literally were just a few short years ago.

Why Do Kids Stink So Much??

Armpits stink in general because they are a warm, moist area of the body that provide a perfect environment for bacteria to grow. When sweat mixes with the bacteria on the skin, it produces a strong odor.

Now, in more scientific terms, we sweat because we have two types of sweat glands on our bodies: eccrine and apocrine. Let’s get to know them.

Eccrine sweat glands are a type of sweat gland found all over the body. These glands produce sweat that helps to regulate the body’s temperature, and are found in the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and forehead.

The sweat produced by these glands is composed of water and salt, and it is odorless. The Eccrine glands are important for maintaining a healthy body temperature, as well as for cooling the body down during exercise or in hot weather.

Apocrine sweat glands, on the other hand, are larger than eccrine glands, and are mainly found in the armpits, groin and scalp area. Apocrine glands produce a thicker, more odorous sweat than eccrine glands, and this sweat contains proteins and fatty acids, which are broken down by bacteria on the skin, causing body odor.

How Do I Talk To My Child About Their Body Odor

The body odor conversation with your child can either go really awkward, or it can go really smoothly. The trick is to pick the right time and place, and make it as casual as possible.

After realizing that my little guy was starting to stink, and after doing thorough research on kid-friendly deodorants, I snuck the topic in while we were out walking. I figured that the best time to bring up the topic of body odor was while it was happening—during exercise.

The conversation went something like “man, we both stink right now” (my son raises his arm and proceeds to smell his armpit and gags). “You’re right” he replies. I then ask him how he feels about getting his own deodorant and putting it on as part of his morning routine.

The response? Complete excitement. Something about being able to wear deodorant made him feel like a mini adult with a new exciting responsibility.

“Wow, they make those for kids?” He asked. I told him yes, and explained to him how it all works. We even got into the whole chemistry of body odor and how that all works and he was really fascinated with it instead of grossed out.

What Are The Benefits Of Natural Deodorants For Kids?

  • Natural deodorants are free from harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances that can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Natural deodorants are made from ingredients like baking soda, arrowroot powder, activated charcoal and essential oils, which are gentle and safe for kids.
  • Natural deodorants are also free from aluminum, which is a common ingredient in many conventional deodorants and has been linked to many health concerns.

Do Natural Deodorants Really Work?

My son, who is 9 now, has been wearing a natural deodorant for a year now, and after some trial and error with different formulas and brands, we finally found the one, and I’ll tell you right now that not only does it kill odor, it even keeps his underarms dry during PE at school (not that he sweats a lot at his age, but physical activity in humid Northwest Florida is nasty).

Every child is different, so you’ll find that not every natural deodorant will work for them. You have to experiment to see which formula works with their body type.

All of these natural deodorants are safe for kids, and are made with 100% natural ingredients (made without parabens, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances). They are also vegan and cruelty-free.

Kidskin Odor Fighting Natural Deodorant

Kidskin is one of my favorite children’s skincare brands. In fact, I have them listed in my Top 5 Face Creams For Kids article.

The Kidskin natural deodorant for kids is made with baking soda and tapioca starch—two ingredients that neutralize odor and trap moisture. It also has another interesting natural ingredient, Diatomaceous Earth, which is composed mostly of silica, and just like its friends, baking soda and tapioca starch, is a highly absorbent material that takes away bad smells.

Unlike other natural deodorants, Kidskin is unscented—making it a highly hypoallergenic option for someone with very sensitive skin. So if your child’s skin is so sensitive that they can’t even handle essential oils, this natural deodorant is the best choice.

The Natural Organic Family Skincare For Kids | Honest Review

An Honest Review Of Kids’ Skincare Products From Natural Organic Family

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Not too long ago, I got my two young children (ages 5 & 9) started on a simple skincare routine in order to create healthy habits that will:

  • Build resistance against teenage acne and
  • Prevent unintended damage.

It was important to me that the skincare products which my kids use are as natural as possible, and don’t contain any harsh or toxic chemicals. There are far too many children’s skincare products now a days that contain a lot of carcinogens, which is unfortunate.

Kids have much thinner skin than grownups, which makes it vulnerable to harsh environmental elements. Hence, daily cleansing with the incorporation of a moisturizer adds a protective barrier without clogging pores.

With that said, I was so excited when the Natural Organic Family sent us some kids’ skincare products to try out, and after a few uses, I noticed a few wonderful benefits:

  • The foaming face wash and face creams are hypoallergenic and gentle on all skin types—especially delicate skin. Neither of my children developed any type of skin reaction.
  • The face cream for kids leaves skin feeling soft and moisturized without any greasy residue, which makes you feel good knowing that you aren’t clogging your child’s pores.
  • The product containers are easy for little kids to hold and dispense on their own. My 5 year old daughter feels like such a “big kid” when using these products on her own each day.
  • My 9 year old boy’s rough and bumpy texture around his nostril area has smoothed out because I no longer have to fight with him over washing his face (boys can be so difficult sometimes lol).
  • A little goes a long way, and these products will last you a good while. So while they may be up there in price, they‘re high quality and last a good couple of months before you need to restock.

About The Natural Organic Family

The Natural Organic Family was founded in 2012 by Marili Aitken. After becoming a mom and noticing that traditional skincare products were too harsh for her child, Marili was determined to create natural and organic children’s skincare products that were safe, effective and cruelty-free.

The Natural Organic Family Foaming Face Wash & Moisturizer Review

Natural Organic Family face wash

Natural Organic Family Foaming Face Wash

The Scent: A Lovely Citrus

The light and airy foam of this gentle foaming face wash has an invigorating sweet citrus scent that smells very much like the zest of a fresh orange. My children were pleasantly surprised by this lovely scent and couldn’t get enough.

The Experience: Clean & Fresh

I tried this facial cleanser on myself along with my children so that I can partake in the experience. It was gentle on all of our skin types, and left us feeling clean and fresh without over drying our skin. My children have continued to use this cleanser each night following their baths, and it’s made washing their face a fun activity, rather than a chore.

The Features:

  • Environmentally friendly ingredients
  • Over 80% certified organic ingredients
  • 97% natural ingredients
  • Vegan

The Natural Organic Family Face Creams For Kids

The Scents:

  • Blackberry & Ylang Ylang
  • Pepperment, Lime & Tea Tree
  • Unscented

We were able to try out all three creams, and each one (not including the unscented) had a unique herbal scent due to being infused with natural essential oils. My daughter’s favorite is the blackberry & Ylang Ylang. It has a subtle scent that’s very sweet and calming.

The peppermint, lime and tea tree face cream is a bit stronger in scent and smells exactly like a peppermint candy cane. This scent might not be for everyone, but I will say that it has a soothing effect on the senses. It’s also great to put on the skin when your child has a stuffy nose. It’s not strong like VapoRub or anything like that, but it does do wonders for opening the senses—and the scent does get weaker as the day goes on.

The Experience: Moisture-Rich Skin That’s Not Greasy

We love all of the facial moisturizers and they all go on very easily and create a nice hydrating barrier that’s not greasy. It is easily absorbed by the skin and keeps it from drying out throughout the day which is great during cold seasons.

The Features:

  • Helps soothe and calm the skin
  • Helps reduce redness and inflammation
  • Helps control breakouts
  • Deeply nourishes the skin
  • Vegan

With that said, below are three Abiie plates that I own and all about the features that make them so unique and worth buying. Trust me, I know that there are a ton of toddler dinnerware brands just as cute as these, but the quality of Abiie is phenomenal and sets them apart from the rest.

OCTOPOD Silicone Baby Suction Bowls

The Octopod silicone baby suction bowl is thick and durable yet lightweight and flexible, and comes with a convenient silicone lid. I really love this bowl because it’s great for refrigerating left overs, and really great for travel (if you’re flying, these stick really well to the seat tray and prevent spills).

The bowl (and lid) have a buttery soft feel and are very easy to wipe and wash. Most of the time, I place the bowl into the dishwasher along with other dirty plates and it comes out perfectly clean. Other times, I give it a quick rinse with a sponge and some dishwashing detergent.

Overall, this is a great bowl for on-the-go and soft, liquified foods such as soups, yogurts and purées. Moms can even use themselves for smoothie bowls or ice cream.

OCTOPOD Silicone Frog Suction Dishes

The Octopod silicone frog dish is my little one’s favorite. The frog face shape adds fun to every meal, and it sits securely on the dining room table / high chair thanks to the powerful suction cup.

Just like the Octopod Silicone bowl, the frog dish itself is very thick and durable, and has a very buttery soft feel that makes washing it very effortless. I use it for my little one’s main meals as well as a snack spread.

Overall, this is a great plate to use for baby led weaning. It has three sections for three different food groups, it has an amusing design and it stays put so that mom or dad have less to clean.

OCTOPOD Bamboo Baby Suction Dishes

The Octopus Bamboo baby suction dish is just as impressive as the silicone frog plate.

It is made from sustainable bamboo and contains a strong and effective silicone suction cup. It contains 3 spacious sections and stays in place no matter how hard your little one tries to knock it over.

I really love that this dish came with a matching spoon, which is also made from a combination of bamboo and silicone. Babies who are teething need that soft padding on a spoon to avoid hurting their sensitive gums, so this a wonderful feature.

Now, also let me remind you that these plates aren’t just for babies. My daughter is now 6 years old and she still loves using these plates whenever she has pancakes with syrup in the morning because it’s easy for her to dip!

The only con about these plates (and it’s not really that big of a deal) is that they are not dishwasher safe. The bamboo would crack and you’d destroy the plate from the heat. However, hand washing these plates is a breeze, and food washes off very easily.

When you come across a family owned sustainable fashion brand with amazing designs, you have to give it a chance and add a piece or two to your child’s capsule wardrobe—which is what happened when I came across the adorable Little & Lively kids’ sustainable fashion line from The Kindred Studio.

This year as I went through and decluttered my daughter’s closet, I took a long hard look at all of her apparel and realized that much of it wasn’t even put to use. Many of her items were impulse buys, and after going through a lot of washes, the colors had faded, and the overall quality of the fabric had diminished. I couldn’t even donate much of it.

So I decided that in 2023, I am going to go the minimalist route, and slowly replace the items in her closet with high quality sustainable apparel that not only lasts longer than traditional fashion, but is much gentler on her skin and the environment. And I was going to start this endeavor with Little & Lively.

A Quick Background On Little & Lively

Source | Little & Lively | YouTube

Little and Lively is a family-owned, sustainable baby & children’s clothing line from The Kindred Studio that is based in Canada. Their clothing is made from a buttery soft blend of durable bamboo / cotton, and each piece contains vibrant earthy colors with whimsical designs that both parents and children adore.

In recent years, bamboo has skyrocketed in popularity as fabric of choice amongst eco conscious designers and consumers alike. And it’s no surprise considering the many economic and health advantages that this resource offers. In fact, there are so many wonderful benefits to dressing your child in Bamboo fabric that I’ve made a list below to show you why companies like Little & Lively (who utilize bamboo) are a great alternative to many popular fast fashion brands.

What Are The Benefits Of Bamboo Clothing?

  • Bamboo fiber is naturally porous and breathable, which keeps your child from overheating. It also absorbs sweat and allows it to evaporate at a faster rate than cotton.
  • Unlike other fabric, research confirms that bamboo is antibacterial, and keeps your child’s sweat odorless because it can kill up to 99.9% of bacteria.
  • Bamboo fabric offers natural UV protection, which is great during those hot summer months when children play outside.
  • Bamboo fabric is buttery soft and hypoallergenic, which is perfect for children with sensitive skin, allergies and conditions like eczema, keratosis pilaris and others.
  • Bamboo fabric is very durable, and can withstand a ton of washes and not fade. The colors remain vibrant, and the material remains buttery soft to the touch.
  • Lastly, bamboo is an eco-friendly and sustainable resource that grows back incredibly fast, doesn’t require the use of pesticides, and produces a lot less pollution than other fabric such as cotton.

Little & Lively Fashion Pieces We Love!

When I received my shipment from Little & Lively, I noticed right away that the bamboo fabric was a little heavier than your typical cotton outfit—in a good way. The fabric also felt silky smooth, the colors looked vibrant, and the stitching was high quality. These were definitely not your typical fast fashion disasters that would last for a limited amount of time. It was obvious that Little & Lively are “heirloom” quality, and could be handed down to younger siblings while still looking new years later.

Below are a few items that we received from Little & Lively to try out, and I’m looking forward to purchasing more pieces in the future. It’s important that my children love their clothing as much as I do, so I was very happy that my four year old daughter enjoyed trying these on and asked to wear them on a regular basis. Luckily, we currently live in Florida, so the dress is a piece that she can wear year round.

The Clementine Dress In Purple Daisies

Eco Mom Diaries Rating: 5/5

One of the items that we received from Little & Lively was this adorable Clementine dress with 3/4 inch sleeve and two front pockets that my daughter thought were very fun. This pattern can literally be worn in the spring, summer and fall, and can be paired with leggings or tights during the colder months (as seen in the photo).

I see my daughter wearing these for at least two more years, and I LOVE that I can pair them with any shirt. I also love the earthy burgundy color and big front pocket. We paired these overalls with a Little & Lively caramel cardigan, and a Little & Lively caramel pompom beanie.

How To Get Rid Of Chicken Skin In Children

The Skincare Routine That Helps Our Son Keep Chicken Skin At Bay

Hi friends! If you’re reading this post, then you’re searching for a solution to dreaded “chicken skin”. Fortunately, I have some great tips for you because my 9 year old has had this issue for years, and I finally found a regimen that works for him.

In this blog, l’ll share our journey in tackling our child’s keratosis Pilaris. We took a two-pronged approach, addressing it from both inside and outside. It was a challenge, but we were determined to find a solution.

KP can be a real pain, but taking care of what you put in your body and how you or your child care for your skin can make a huge difference. Read on to see what we did, below!

A Little Background

When my son entered toddlerhood, we noticed that the back of his arms were developing tiny little rough patches. And as he grew, those little rough patches started developing more pronounced little bumps that resembled tiny white pearls.

The bumps didn’t appear to bother him, they weren’t itchy, and during those early years, they weren’t very visible. However, I was still concerned, and addressed the issue with his pediatrician during every well check.

Unfortunately, I received the same answer at every visit: “They’re just harmless little cysts that’ll go away on their own”. That answer always frustrated me because the pediatrician could never give me an exact time line, and told me to just “exfoliate and moisturize” my son’s arms as part of his bathing routine.

Well, I did that for years and nothing changed. In fact, when my son turned 8 earlier this year, the Keratosis Pilaris started to grow out of control. The tiny white pearls on his upper arms had become enlarged and very visible.

They also started to sporadically spread down his arm toward his wrist, and tiny ones began to appear on his cheeks—but the worst ones were in the region above his elbow (see image below).

Keratosis Pilaris on Child’s

The Keratosis Pilaris doesn’t cause him any discomfort and they don’t itch. But, my son is at the age where he’s noticing that they are present, and that his friends don’t have them.

So a few months ago I decided to have him see his pediatrician again in an effort to obtain a referral to a dermatologist—someone who would take his condition seriously and give us a real sustainable solution.

Thankfully, his referral was approved and we were able to be seen by a local skincare professional.

Diagnosis And Treatment Plan

Upon examining his arms, the dermatologist confirmed that my son had a pretty bad case of Keratosis Pilaris, and gave us a skincare routine to follow as well as a prescription for a retinoid cream called Tretinoin (a compound made from vitamin A).

And since those who suffer from Keratosis Pilaris are said to have a vitamin A deficiency, it makes perfect sense that this cream is prescribed to treat this condition, and in our case, it has been pretty darn successful.

Another cream that our dermatologist recommended along with the Tretinoin is the Cetaphil Rough and Bumpy daily smoothing moisturizer, which can be purchased at any store. This cream contains 20% salicylic acid, and we have been using it in combination with the Tretinoin, which helps keep his skin from drying out from the retinoid.

If you’d rather take a more non-toxic approach when it comes to lotions, Evereden makes a wonderful organic eczema cream that I‘ve started using on my son when there are no flare ups, and his KP is very minimal.

Unfortunately, his keratosis Pilaris was so aggressive in the beginning that we absolutely had to try tretinoin and Cetaphil to get everything under control.

A word of caution: if you or your child ends up using Tretinoin or any other retinoid, definitely make sure to have them wear sun screen when going outside as it might make them burn faster.

Along with the creams, the Dermatologist instructed my son to gently scrub his skin with a bristle brush during his bathing routine, so I purchased a full sized dry-brush from Amazon that came with a strap. The strap allows him to to easily hold on to the brush while using it in both the bath and shower (it’s also eco-friendly).

The dermatologist also said to use any kind of body wash that contains salicylic acid, so we went with the Cetaphil brand again. Now that that my son’s arms are a lot smoother, we alternate with other, more gentle body wash for kids.

So just to recap, after my son’s shower, we apply Tretinoin, followed by Cetaphil Rough and Bumpy Skin (or Evereden). The prescription Tretinoin goes on first, and after allowing it to dry, we apply the Cetaphil Rough and Bumpy smoothing moisturizer.

After a few weeks of treatment, my son’s skin isn’t perfect, but the improvement is drastic! (See image below). We are going to keep at it, and I’m excited to see what the results will be in a few months.

What If I Can’t Get A Tretinoin Perscription?

A lot of families have limited or no health insurance, and aren’t able to see a professional dermatologist. If you’re one of those people, I have good news for you!!

You can actually purchase a similar cream called Adapalene (0.1%), also a topical retinoid cream, on places like Amazon without a prescription for around $30.

My dermatologist said that they both work the same, and that both are highly effective for Keratosis Pilaris. It’s funny because my copay for my son’s Tretinoin prescription was actually $30 as well, so I could have just purchased the Adapalene gel.

Did Diet Cause My Child’s Keratosis Pilaris?

I asked our dermatologist the very same question because I read online that Keratosis Pilaris may be cause by a gluten allergy. She stated that there are no proven studies which warrant this, and that diet has nothing to do with this condition.

However, a diet consisting of too much sugar and processed foods can contribute to the problem because it causes inflammation. I’ve actually noticed that when my son eats too much junk food, his arms will product more cysts.

Lastly, the dermatologist also stated that many people with this condition have a vitamin A deficiency, and giving a supplement or increasing foods high in vitamin A wouldn’t hurt.

Hence, I went ahead and purchased 3 supplements to help combat the skin issue from the inside out (and they are all formulated specifically for children).

I was able to find a K2 vitamin which does all sorts of wonderful things to the skin like reducing inflammation, combating acne and even helps heal scars. It’s a chewable, easy on the belly, and tastes like berries which my son loves. It’s also combined with D3 which helps calcium absorb better so that’s a plus!

Another supplemented that I purchased is an Omega-3, DHA for kids by Nordic Naturals made from the oil of wild arctic cod. Omega-3s help fight inflammation and help even out skin tone from within. My son takes 4 little chewable gel capsules each morning with his breakfast and they taste like strawberries—no fishy taste whatsoever!

Lastly, another great supplement that I added to this skincare routine is vitamin C gummies by Burt’s Bees. Vitamin C is great for the skin, helps new collagen to grow, and allows other vitamins to be absorbed better. My son takes two in the morning, and since they’re made with Manuka honey, they also double as an immune booster.

Supplement for children’s keratosis Pilaris

Is There A Difference Between Keratosis Pilaris And Milia?

Keratosis Pilaris and milia (or milk spots) are two skin conditions that are often confused with one another.

Milia are small, white, hard bumps that form on the skin, usually around the eyes, nose, and cheeks and caused by a buildup of keratin, which is a protein found in the skin. Milia is most common in babies and young toddlers.

Keratosis Pilaris (or chicken skin), on the other hand, is a common skin condition that causes small, rough bumps to form on the skin, usually on the upper arms, thighs, and buttocks. This condition is more common in older children and adults.

Keratosis Pilaris is likewise caused by a buildup of keratin, which can block hair follicles and cause the bumps to form.

Final Thoughts

I sincerely hope that our experience with Keratosis Pilaris helps you find answers that you have been seeking.

Prior to finding treatment for my son, I have never been able to find anything online about adolescents dealing with this issue (other than WebMD), so I was determined to share our journey with other parents whose child is struggling with this condition.

While we haven’t been able to completely eradicate my child’s Keratosis Pilaris, we’ve certainly been able to keep it at a minimum with proper nutrition and a consistent skincare routine.

The Christmas Poop Log Unboxing & Review

Looking For A New Christmas Tradition? See Why Kids And Parents Are Loving The Christmas Poop Log

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

If you’re looking for an alternative to Elf On The Shelf, you’ve come to the right place!

My kids and I have had the fun opportunity to review “The Christmas Poop Log” story book and activity set that’s not only fun, but super quirky.

The storybook is beautifully told and illustrated, while the DIY poop log brings the story to life (And my kids couldn’t stop laughing when making the poop log).

What Is The Christmas Poop Log Tradition About?

The Christmas Poop Log centers around a Christmas Tradition celebrated in the Catalonia region in Northern Spain, and it goes back to the 18th century.

Family members go out into the wilderness and find the perfect poop log, bring it home, dress him in festive attire, and name him “Caga Tió”.

Every day, family members “feed” Caga Tió with fruits and nuts until December 24th.  It is then that Caga Tió is tapped with sticks while the family sings a corresponding song asking it to “poop” presents!

Is The Christmas Poop Log Activity Set Hard To Put Together?

The Poop Log activity set comes with all the essentials to make Caga Tió come to life, and is so easy to put together that my two kids assembled it in under 5 minutes!

Below is a TikTok of my kids putting The Christmas Poop Log together. My youngest stated that Caga Tió reminded her of Forky from Toy Story 4.

This kit makes a great gift not only for kids, but for adults as well ( it makes an epic White Elephant gift ).

Is The Christmas Poop Log Sustainable?

The Christmas Poop Log that goes along with the book is indeed eco-friendly, and the author, Jonathan Chastek, is making sure of that!

“Because the tradition is rooted in nature, a tree will be planted for every purchase through our partnership with OneTreePlanted,” says Chastek, “I very much want to keep sustainability at the forefront.”

The author hopes that Caga Tió will become a part of every family’s holiday tradition, and be stowed away with holiday décor and utilized for many years to come.

Where Can I Purchase The Christmas Poop Log?

The Christmas Poop Log

The entire activity set can be purchased on the author’s website (it isn’t yet available on Amazon).

However, if you’re interested in purchasing only the story book, that is available on Amazon, click here to shop for it on Amazon.

Lastly, the tradition has recently been adopted by families and celebrities alike who appreciate its silliness and fun factor including famed former Saturday Night Live Star, Comedian and Actor, Kate McKinnon.

So is The Christmas Poop Log a great buy? Absolutely. I think it’s a fun new Christmas Tradition that every parent should start with their kids. We have our Caga Tió sitting under our tree, and my kids love feeding him cookies until the big day!

The Best Non-Toxic Laundry Detergents

Ready To Toss Your Toxic Laundry Detergent? Read On To Learn About The Best Plant-Based Detergent Brands!

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Shopping for a natural detergent brand, but not sure which one to choose? You’ve come to the right place!

One of the most used cleaning products in the home is laundry detergent—and it makes constant contact with our skin via clothing, towels and bedding. And due to this constant contact, a lot of people question the ingredients and how they impact our overall health.

Unfortunately, many popular laundry detergents are made with harsh chemicals that have both short and long term consequences on our health. But, you can easily protect yourself and your family from these scary toxins by switching to a natural detergent.

With that said, we’ve created a shopping guide to the safest laundry detergents on the market. They contain all-natural ingredients, as well as eco-friendly packaging that doesn’t harm the planet.

Why Is Natural Laundry Detergent Better?

As mentioned above, mainstream laundry detergents contain ingredients that are actually harmful to our health—but how?

Well, even in the rinse cycle, detergent doesn’t entirely wash out—it lingers in the fibers. And when we sweat, our pores absorb whatever leaches out, resulting in skin conditions like rash and eczema.

That’s why it’s especially important to at least invest in non-toxic laundry detergent when it comes to your children, as well as undergarments, which are tight fitting, and can actually be the cause of your recurring BV (bacterial vaginitis) due to all the synthetic chemicals.

How To Choose The Right Non-Toxic Laundry Detergent

Choosing an all-natural l laundry detergent can be confusing for anyone—especially because there are so many different kinds like: pods, sheets, powders, liquids and even “berries”. But, there are certain qualities to look for when shopping for eco-friendly and non-toxic laundry detergents and those are:

  • Paraben Free
  • Pthalate Free
  • Phosphate Free
  • Bleach & Dye Free
  • Vegan & Cruelty Free
  • Recyclable & Compostable Packaging

5 Best Natural Face Creams For Kids

The Top 5 Non-Toxic Facial Moisturizers For A Safe Pediatric Skincare Routine

This post contains affiliate links which may earn Eco Mom Diaries a commission.

Shopping for an all-natural face cream to go along with your child’s non toxic facial cleanser? You’ve come to the right place!

Many parents wonder if facial moisturizers are an appropriate addition to a child’s skincare routine because it’s considered by many to be an “unnecessary luxury”. However, there are actually many benefits to having your child use facial moisturizers and we’ll talk about them in this article.

With that said, we’ve also put together a buyer’s guide to the safest plant-based face creams that are made specifically for kids and their delicate skin.

Why Do Kids Need Facial Moisturizers?

A child’s night time skincare routine should include a thorough face wash followed by applying a hydrating face cream—even if they skip a bath that night. And there are several benefits to incorporating this routine prior to bedtime each night:

  • Children have thinner skin than adults, making it vulnerable to environmental elements. Adding a moisturizer adds a barrier.
  • Babies and young children don’t have the natural protective oils that teens and adults do, making their skin more prone to drying out and making skin conditions like eczema even worse.
  • Children lose moisture in their skin after washing their face, and a moisturizer is a great way to re-hydrate their skin.

Why Can’t I Just Use Lotion On My Child’s Face?

Many parents wonder if they can just use lotion on their child’s face following a bath or facial cleanser. And while you certainly can, it’s important to know the difference between the two and how each affects the skin.

  • Lotions have higher water content than face creams, which means that while they spread more easily, they also evaporate quicker.
  • Face creams are thicker and have more oil content, which means that the barrier they create stays on longer, and keep your child’s skin from drying out faster.
  • Body lotion may also contain fragrance that can irritate your child’s face, and make child acne or eczema a lot worse.

How To Choose The Right Face Cream For Young Children

When it comes to natural face creams for children and adolescents, there are several important key features you should look for to make sure that the moisturizer is truly non-toxic:

  • Free of harsh chemicals such as sulfates, parabens and phthalates.
  • Non-greasy formula.
  • Hypoallergenic with natural fragrance or fragrance-free.
  • A combination of all-natural and organic ingredients.
  • Vegan and cruelty free.

What Are Noncomedogenic Creams?

Now, if your child is starting puberty (usually age 8 for girls and age 9 for boys), they may start producing more facial oil on their own, and some face creams may clog pores and create acne.

In that case, it’s important to choose a cream that’s noncomedogenic—meaning it’s specifically designed to not clog pores but is still able to moisturize and hydrate the skin.

It’s also important to know that many natural face creams contain tree nuts, seeds and soy as ingredients, so if your child is allergic to any of these, please use caution (get advice from your pediatrician or do a spot test).

With that said, below are 5 of the most effective yet gentle pediatric facial moisturizers for kids that are perfect to use with their natural facial cleansers.

These pediatric face creams are great for all skin types, and even help with skin conditions such as child and adolescent acne, as well as eczema without clogging pores.
